What is a German these days? Matondo (20), Bahar (29) and Daniel (18) were born and bred in Berlin. But looking at them, it’s clear that their parents came from the Congo, Persia and Azerbaijan. It’s something they’re reminded of a lot in their everyday lives. This film asks about these young people’s sense of identity. It wants to find out how accepted by the majority of the population and by politicians they feel.

Documentary Everyone is talking about climate change. But what happens on the ground when a natural system suddenly flips out of balance? This question has taken the Dutch adventurer and science journalist Bernice Notenboom on a journey around the globe – from Greenland to South Africa, from the Amazon to the Himalayas and across Europe. Temperatures in Greenland are up to 16°C higher than normal and the melting process is accelerating. How are the inhabitants of Greenland coping with this situation? Also, the tropical Amazon rainforest is giving researchers cause for worry. The warming of the surrounding oceans is, paradoxically, gradual drying out the jungle area, which is increasingly threatening biodiversity. Even Alsace is another big concern: In just 30 years there, the harvest for red wine has moved forward 30 days. But the consequences of global warming can already best be seen in the permafrost of Siberia and Alaska. Here, the ground is thawing out remarkably quickly. Thawing plant matter is releasing large amounts of greenhouse gases generated by their decomposition.

15:00 DW News 15:15 The End of Chance – The Power of Algorithms

Documentary Almost everything is recorded and saved. We constantly produce data about our environment and ourselves via our smartphones. Sensors and cameras in our phones, vehicles and computers detect our current location and what we’re doing. Scientists analyze this wealth of data and use the past to calculate the future – a new field called "predictive analytics.” There are now programs that predict how we’re likely to act and what preferences we have. And there are a lot of people who want this knowledge. That’s because the more precise the algorithms become, the more likely companies are to maximize profits, minimize risks and predict conflicts. Or not? What price does a society managed by algorithms have to pay?

Documentary Five people are fighting for a better China. What they all have in common is the desire to change things in their country. Our film follows a labor lawyer with his own NGO, an activist against child trafficking, a blogger against the forced relocation of farmers, an intellectual and novelist – and also a self-made man who is involved as a private benefactor. These committed citizens are working for the gradual emergence of a civil society in the "Middle Kingdom,” which has lost its balance in the rapid development of recent years. The economic boom has changed China dramatically.

Everyone’s at it, everywhere: at home, in the subway, during the lunch break, on the computer, the tablet or the smartphone, and that with a passion that’s usually absent during the day-to-day routine and at work. Now this wasted creative potential is to be harnessed through "gamification.” The idea’s simple: if you approach irritating tasks in a playful manner, people can be motivated to do things that otherwise tend to bore them. The magic phrase is "instant feedback.” The participant’s performance is evaluated right away and success is rewarded. If participants don’t make the grade, they’re told where they need to improve. Will we live, learn and work better if our everyday lives, function like computer games? Or will gamification become a surveillance tool in a world where virtual and real competition merges and the chase for the highest score never ends?

There hasn’t been peace in the Congo for 20 years, the army and the various militias are locked in a constant battle over the country’s precious mineral resources. The fighters on both sides have been profiled often but this documentary looks at a group often thought of as merely victims of the war; women. On both sides there are female combatants. Some are fighting for what they believe in, others because they have nowhere else to go and nothing to lose. Many of these women have never seen peace, they joined to replace fathers lost in battle and never looked back. Others have left a militia but are unable to return home so the army seems like the next best option. Who are these women and what motivates them? We meet those on both sides to hear their stories.

Documentary Istanbul’s in danger! Two tectonic plates are rubbing against each other right outside the city on the Bosphorus with its population of 14 million. There have been serious seismic shocks along this fault line since 1939 and the quakes are moving inexorably towards Istanbul. The next major seismic shock could hit the city itself. But when? And how bad will it be? Professor Marco Bohnhoff from the GFZ, the German Geo Research Center in Potsdam, wants to install a new type of sensor a hundred meters below ground, as close to the earthquake zone as possible. He believes that the tectonic plates have become jammed right outside the city. If the pressure becomes too great, they will sunder with a huge bang – a horrific scenario. But will it really come to that? The new sensors deliver data with a hitherto unseen accuracy, and the first soundings seem to confirm all the worst fears.

Documentary "I came, I saw, I sang” – exclaims Andreas Scholl, singing Julius Caesar. Starting with the historical figure, he explains why Handel chose the high pitch of the castrato for the epitome of the male hero in his opera “Giulio Cesare.” Castrati are men who can sing as high as women: around 300 years ago, they could become operatic superstars. But what creates the mysterious allure of the countertenor? This documentary observes Andreas Scholl at work at the University of Mainz and accompanies him to his concerts to uncover the secrets of this ethereal register and its effects.

Documentary In December 2014 the ISAF mission of the allied forces in Afghanistan came to an end. The International Security Assistance Force was to deliver a minimum level of democracy, security and peace to the people of Afghanistan. Reporter Ashwin Raman has been there to see the results for himself, spending two months travelling through Afghanistan in the summer of 2014. There he met German and American troops preparing to return home. He also visited the training camps of the Afghan army, on which all hopes of peace and security now rest. And he provides insights into the fearful lives of the Afghan population: never before has life been as unsafe here as it is now, with attacks and assassinations every day. The Islamist terror of the Taliban has returned and the War on Terror seems to have been lost.

Documentary Graffiti, violent attacks, religious services under police protection, and even verbal gaffes by politicians: More than 75 years after the Holocaust, anti-Semitism is back in vogue in Germany. Anti-Semitic statements are no longer just a matter for neo-Nazis – completely different groups are tending to make them too. “There are now no-go areas for Jews,” says Berlin Rabbi Daniel Alter of his city. These are, for example, parts of Neukölln and Wedding with a high proportion of Arab and Turkish immigrants. He himself was brutally attacked and injured by Arab youths in broad daylight a year ago. But even more worrying than the open attacks is latent anti-Semitism amongst the population. For decades, surveys have shown that anti-Semitic attitudes are not just the

Documentary Ricardo Laubinger lives in Hildesheim in Lower Saxony, where the presence of Sinti was first documented in 1407. The Laubingers have lived there for many generations. In summer they used to take to the road to earn a living as merchants and craftsmen. Even though Ricardo was only born in 1959, he still went peddling his wares and services. But since the collapse of the Soviet bloc in 1989 and the influx of Roma and Sinti from Southeastern Europe, they have been exposed to new waves of racist attacks. "Sinti and Roma,” people shout. “We are Sinti,” says Ricardo Laubinger, “We are German! We have lived here for 600 years and want mainstream society to understand that." He and other German Sinti tell their stories: the trauma of Auschwitz, poor but happy childhoods, Sinti culture. Does anyone know that famous German pop singer Marianne Rosenberg is a Sinti? A moving report about a little-known chapter in German postwar history.

Documentary Hunts Point was once a peaceful part of the Bronx but in the 1970s, the neighborhood deteriorated into New York’s poorhouse. It became the city’s most notorious red light and drug district, a tinderbox of social problems. Even though the borough houses the world’s largest wholesale market for fish, meat and fresh vegetables and supplies around 8.4 million New Yorkers with food, more people here are malnourished than anywhere else in the city. The air is also worst here and the number of asthmatics higher. But a network of activists is now working to improve living conditions in Hunts Point and we meet some of them in this film: an ex-banker who now runs a blog giving junkies and prostitutes a voice; mothers fighting for clean air; and Chickey, affectionately known as the "Mayor of Spafford Avenue,” an ex-junkie who now provides a place of refuge for young people in his "Candy Store.”

Eyes dilated with fear, a razor blade, a face contorted with pain – Images of a circumcision in Kenya. It’s a centuries-old ritual that lives on in spite of the law against female genital mutilation adopted in 2011. The resistance from the ethnic groups that do not want to depart from the old traditions is too great, as is the pressure on the girls who allow themselves to be "voluntarily” circumcised for fear of not finding a husband. The Kenyan filmmaker Beryl Magoko traveled to her home village in the Kuria District and made a documentary in the face of great adversity about the circumcision of girls and women. With shocking accuracy, she shows the cruel practice of genital mutilation whilst still dispensing with the bloody details. Faces and stories of women and girls you will not forget...

19:00 DW News 19:15 The Music’s Over – Death & Pop

Documentary The question of the link between death and rock music is frequently raised, not least because of the early deaths of rock stars such as Jim Morrison, Sid Vicious and Amy Winehouse. But even death is subject to fashion: zeitgeist and social and political backgrounds all determine how we deal with it. This musical documentary goes on a journey through pop history, starting in the sixties with psychedelic rock, via the punk movement of the seventies to Dark Wave in the eighties as well as gangsta rap. Artists from these decades explain their relationship to dying and to death – be it as a metaphysical experience of existence, the ultimate negation, world-weariness or raw violence.

Eisleben and Wittenberg – Commemorating Martin Luther, Germany The towns of Eisleben and Wittenberg also bear the official epithet "Lutherstadt”, or "Luthertown” – Eisleben as the place where Martin Luther was born and eventually died, and Wittenberg as the center of his reformatory activities. Luther and the Reformation means more than just the transformation of the Christian world, it also stands for the profound political reconfiguration of Germany. The key memorial sites on the Luther trail are the houses were Luther was born and died in Eisleben; and in Wittenberg primarily the Schlosskirche or Castle Church where he nailed his famous 95 theses against the sale of indulgences as a penance for sin in the year 1517. He and his fellow-campaigner Philipp Melanchthon were also buried in this church.

The Salafis are the fastest growing religious group in Europe. Their aim is to remake society in their own image. Salafism is a manifestation of Islam that calls for a return to the lifestyle of the faith’s pious ancestors. Thousands of young men have become fascinated by the Jihadists’ propaganda and set off to fight in the "Holy War.” And many girls and women are increasingly drawn to the romance of Jihad. They believe that it is honorable to support the men in the fight against the infidels. The Internet has become the second battlefield: The Islamist fighters demonstrate their power in video clips, smilingly showing the world executions and severed heads to cries of "Allahu Akbar.” Our report provides insights into the Salafis’ networks, a search that takes us to Germany, France, Austria, Britain and Iraq.

Documentary When the Nazi dictatorship ended in 1945, it left a horrific legacy: Historians now estimate that more than 500,000 Germans participated in the mass murders of the Nazi regime. The Allies initially took on the task of punishing the guilty before handing the prosecution of Nazi criminals over to the German justice system – at which point everything changed. History in East and West Germany ran very different courses, but the outcomes were similar. After a few spectacular propaganda trials, East Germany declared itself ‘Nazi-free’. In West Germany, Nazi perpetrators were granted impunity thanks to wide-ranging amnesty laws.
