Starting Out in Social Media

What I’ve learned as a Media Communications student and as an intern at MavenSocial

Make Connections and Maintain Relationships

Making connections and maintaining relationships is crucial.

Practice what you preach. This is what we social media experts tell the companies who work with us. This is how to gain customers, get information and utilize contacts.

There is always someone that can help you out with something. Whether it’s helping you get connected with someone else, recommending you to a fellow customer, giving you suggestions on your services or products and more.

Behind the Scenes

If you like getting credit and recognition you might be disappointed with this type of career.

There are a lot of behind the scenes tasks that don’t seem important but are. And it is not usually recognized until a campaign is over and you have the analytics.

This is a good career for people who like to work on their own most of the time, designating their own tasks, while having meetings to stay on track with clients and co-workers.

Jump on the Bandwagon and don’t fall off

Social Media marketing is always evolving. There are constantly new ways to do things because programs and applications are always upgrading.

Make sure you know the most current methods of marketing, to get the most out of your time. Don’t waste your time on old methods.

If you are more advanced than others, you will be the one who gets the business.

Be the First

Innovation is key.

Listen to your customers and find solutions to common problems before anyone else does. If you do this you will be the front runner in the business.

Live and learn. You can take what you already have and make it better or tweak it to better relate to certain companies.

Job Opportunities

If you go to school for media communications, you will have a long list of job opportunities. You are not limited.

Areas you are qualified for are endless including but not limited to: Web Design, Videography, Photography, Blogging, Media Manager, Communications Specialist, Public Relations and more.

Some of these jobs can evolve into other positions or include more then one of these areas

It’s never boring, you are never stuck doing the same thing all day.

9-5 Doesn’t Exist

If you work in the Social Media world, don’t plan on working 9-5 all the time. Sometimes you work 8am-11pm. It just comes with the territory.

The good thing about working in Social Media is you can get a bunch of work done in a smaller amount of time. In one day you could write a blog article, make a presentation, do some Search Engine Optimization, edit some video and a few other things. People will be impressed.

To Help or Not to Help

Because you are now a social media expert, friends and family who are business owners like to ask you for advice.

Advice is okay to give but there needs to be a line. If someone takes up a decent amount of your time, you should be charging them.

If you spend half your time helping others with their social media goals, you are being spread too thin.

You will Never Know Everything – Keep

Learning I know a heck of a lot more now than I did 6

months ago. I still have a lot to learn.

The good thing about this job, is you are never bored with the information. There is always a lot more information to suck in.

You start paying more attention to the news and the media, and know what’s going on around you.

The bad thing is, sometimes you wish you knew everything. It would makes things a lot easier. You will probably spend a lot of time researching.

Use Many Resources

If you are working on a campaign and you need to share information with consumers, use as many resources as possible.

Don’t post something to Facebook and consider it a day’s work. The resources are endless. You also have Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Blogs, and way more.

Different applications serve different purposes. While you should use as many resources as possible, make sure you don’t use one that won’t help you in the end. You don’t want to waste your time.

Pay Attention to the World Around You

School has taught me to pay more attention to the news and the media

What you hear isn’t exactly the whole truth. Do your research and make your decisions based on quality information.

MavenSocial has taught me to pay more attention to the world. To think about how I can use my skills for good. How to make a difference in the world using Social Media.
