Event Report November 19, 2011 | Porto

Page 2: Startup Pirates Battle - Event Report 2011

The event was a huge success and we are very happy with the feedback we received. Our goals were accomplished: we wanted to organize an event to promote Portuguese startups and we wanted to create funding opportunities to those startups. Besides, we wanted to celebrate the Global Entrepreneurship Week by bringing together entrepreneurs, startups, wannabe entrepreneurs, investors and incubators.

Page 3: Startup Pirates Battle - Event Report 2011

It was a very intense day. Throughout the day, startups were competing with each other, by pitching their products/services and business models, for a place in the final round. Besides the Startup Competition and the Startup Fair, we also had a Conference with Diamantino Costa, co-founder at Critical Software, Vítor Dinis, CFO at Pathena, Ricardo Diniz, sailor and serial entrepreneur and Alex Barrera, Spanish serial entrepreneur and one of the promoters of the Tetuan Valley and Startup Bootcamp Madrid.

Testimonials

Nuno Pereira (Powa) "All the good vibe of the event was made possible thanks to the fantastic energy of the start-ups and all other participants! Thank you“

David M. Pereira (InPhytro) "The comments of the jury were very useful to improve some aspects of the Project, sometimes they made us think about topics that we have never thought about. It’s a recommended event!"

Testimonials

João Figueiredo (Ex-libris) “Startup Pirates Battle has so far been the best experience I've had regarding contests(…): 1. The feedback is immediate. In

most innovation/entrepreneurship contests we have to wait months for results, and we never know exactly why we win, and even worse, when we lose we don’t know what to fix.

2. Prizes doesn’t matter. Your emphasis on "Glory" and the pleasure of the competition is undoubtedly the right motivation that appeals to a new generation of entrepreneurs.“

Feedback

Overall comments about the event: “Very good energy, great staff, all very well organized!” “Excellent organization, however I thought there were more teams.” “Great spirit from the crew. Great teams and pirates. Great food and mood. Not so very IT friendly investors/judges. Very late start (not the crew's fault, but really everyone should follow the schedule!(…)” “I really think that you are one top Pirate Crew and i would love to keep sailing with you guys! Awesome team!” “Great event. Lot of opportunities and great staff, always ready to help.” “Good promotion, good crowd, good projects and good judges. The conference/speakers were great” “(…) left early because I don't speak Portuguese. That was very disappointing.”

Feedback

Comments about the competiton:

“Overall I think it went very well, I only have two points to note: In future editions would be good that the judges did not change in each one of the rounds (…) and having Pitches with and without media is very positive (…)”

"Due to the number of startups in the in the competition, the two initial rounds could be merged.” “I was expecting a true battle startup 1 vs startup 2 on stage...pointing out flaws on each others projects” “Guidelines should be respected by all startups, besides that the competition model is great and a good example what you should do again in future.”
