I received your letter dated May 11 1 2006 and I'd like to say thanks for admitting that I suffered horrific abuse when I resided in the Church of England North Coast Children's Home in .Lismore. However, I will make comment on an important matter y9u omitted from that letter. This is part of what you wrote: I am sure you know the Archbishop and the Diocese of Sydney have led the way in the Anglican Church in Australia in seeking to address issues of sexual abuse, and that any allegations relating to the Diocese of Sydney are taken with the utmost seriousness. Mr . Selden, I am disappointed that you mentioned you are only prepared to address issues of people who were sexually abused. You didn't mention that you will seek to address issues of the emotional, physical, and verbal abuse the children endured. I and many other children who ' lived ' for many years in that Church of England Home, were whipped and flogged with a pony whip, electrical cords, thick leather straps - sometimes using the belt buckle and twigs from a tree in the back yard, which some times the child, who was going to be beaten, was ordered to pick from the tree. We were backhanded across t he ears and were showered with forceful punches, si:nacks and slaps on different parts of our bodies. The children who were abused in those ways, and many other appalling ways that are too numerous to mention, would have been aged from three or four up to sixteen or seventeen. We were screamed at, threatened with hard-hearted violence and the fear that constantly ruled our cluttered minds had us tottering on the edge of a huge jagged cliff - wondering what in hell was going to happen next. .. . .. ' -· . ,, . .. . .. - .. ... . ... ·-.. . ... - ... . ... ... - . I received your letter dated May 111 2006 and I'd like to say thanks for admitting that I suffered horrific abuse when I resided in the Church of England North Coast Children's Home in .Lismore.

Mr. Selden, I am disappointed that you mentioned you are only prepared to address issues of people who were sexually abused. You didn't mention that you will seek to address issues of the emotional, physical, and verbal abuse the children endured.

I and many other children who 'lived' for many years in that Church of England Home, were whipped and flogged with a pony whip, electrical cords, thick leather straps - sometimes using the belt buckle and twigs from a tree in the back yard, which some times the child, who was going to be beaten, was ordered to pick from the tree.

We were backhanded across the ears and were showered with forceful punches, si:nacks and slaps on different parts of our bodies.

What I have described is a mere drop in the ocean.

[twas sheer hell! The fear was installed in us and it stayed there for minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years and as the Anglican Church is aware I am taking steps to rid the filth with weekly counselling sessions.

In my time the violence was dished out with fiery vengeance by Matron Martin, various staff and the clergy - and it w~s endless.

Another point you need to know is in reference to a statement written by Diocesan Registrar in Grafton, Mr. Pat Comben who has taken on the position of a lawyer.

In the May 2006 issue No 5 published in the 'North Coast Anglican' a few points such as yours was boldly printed on the front page.

This is part of what Mr. Comben wrote in paragraph two: The Anglican Church is committed to providing care and sport for any victim of sexual abuse with in the diocese.

Than, in paragraph seven he wrote: As we work through these difficult issues the diocese will seek to hear those who had been hurt, and will provide immediate support to any victims of sexual abuse within the diocesan system.

Mr. Selden, again there is no support mentioned of the physical, emotional and verbal abuse, which happened to the children.

I am disillusioned, as all the above, seemingJy has been totally ignored.

I ask, is the Anglican Church of Australia or the Anglican Church in Grafton prepared to support the children who were physically, emotionally and verbally abused?

Please don't let them down - tell me they will.

Regards,

Richard 'Tommy' Campion
