addressed possible economic development of Lake Hicpochee, southwest of Moore Ha-ven, and what he called “Lake Clewiston” for lack of a better name. Lake Clewiston, slightly west of the City of Clewiston, was separated from the rest of Lake Okeechobee by the construction of the Herbert Hoover Dike. It is 728 acres and contains dead melaluca trees. Mr. Michael discussed an integrated watershed approach combining economic development, community and ecosystem. His program relies heavily on ec-otourism as well as water storage and treat-

ment. Both lakes are owned by government, so their development by the state would not take any more property off the tax roles.

The coalition is scheduled to take action on a resolution that requests SFWMD to in-clude as part of Everglades restoration the development of these two lakes.

There will also be updates from the coun-ty commissioners representing the 10 coun-ties in the coalition, the treasurer’s report, the annual election of offi cers, comments from the public and announcement of the meeting dates for 2010.Post your opinions in the Public Issues Forum at

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) began another round of pulse releases on the Caloosahatchee River this morning, Jan. 27 to maintain salinity level in the river. The releases are scheduled to go for 11 days with an average fl ow of 650 cubic feet per second. That rate of fl ow will fi ll about 638 Olympic sized swimming pools a day.

On Jan. 22, COE ended a round of pulse

releases on the Caloosahatchee of the same average volume that started on Jan. 12. These releases benefi t the ecology of the upper Caloosahatchee by maintaining the desired salinity level.

On Jan. 26, the level of Lake Okeechobee was 13.49 feet. The level was 13.47 when the last round of pulse releases began.

A pulse-type release more closely resem-bles the naturally occurring pattern of runoff in the estuary caused by rain, which normal-ly leads to an increase in fl ow as rain contin-

ues to fall, followed by a gradual decrease as runoff comes to an end. Water managers expect these releases to help maintain salin-ity ranges that are conducive to sustainability of estuarine organism in the upper estuary. These releases also benefi t the overall ecol-ogy of this area by promoting the mixing of salinity levels and nutrient concentrations from one water level to another.Post your opinions in the Public Issues Forum at

Firefi ghters• I think it is a shame that most of our

police offi cers and fi refi ghters make less money risking their lives for us than some of the administrative secretaries and offi ce help. NOW THAT IS JUST WRONG. Did you know that most of your police offi cers’ and fi refi ghters’ children are eligible for free lunches unless their spouses are employed making a fair wage? I personally think these people should be the highest paid in the community.

Elephants• I was wondering if they ever fi nished

the Elephant Sanctuary here in Okeechobee County, and if the elephants arrived. On the news this morning they ran a segment on the desire to build an Elephant Sanctuary in St. Lucie County.

• The plan has always been for it to be in St. Lucie County, just over the county line. This is the same plan they had all along. It will be just over the county line but an en-trance will be from Okeechobee County. It will not be open to the public, but they will have programs for school children.

Haiti• How can we afford to help them?

How can we pledge millions in relief and restructure? We are so in debit now. We need to help the people here. I hate it for those people but we don’t have it to give. There’s homeless helpless people right here due to the economy. Help our own country get back on our feet before helping anyone else. Who helped us when we were hit by natural disasters with all those hurricanes in 2004 and 2005?

Okeechobee ghosts• Do we have a paranormal group in

Okeechobee? I would love to join.

• I am a believer in paranormal activities. I love the “bogus” shows on TV. My niece on the other hand has shown some type of clairvoyant tendencies. We have a fam-ily graveyard on the Kissimmee River. It was her fi rst time there -- she was 3 or 4 -- and she was walking with her mother and father. She looked over the graveyard and then said ‘look at all them babies.’ There was no one else in the graveyard at the time but there are several babies buried there from the late 1800s. When she was about 4, they were going to look at a place to rent. On the way there she told her mom and dad that they were not gonna like this place because all the carpet is red. They just laughed at her. When they opened the door to the rental, sure enough the place was wall to wall blood red carpet. They left immediately.

Shopping in Okeechobee• What kind of new store does Okeecho-

bee need?• How about a toy store and hobby

shop?• I have long said that the community

would benefi t greatly from a book store. While Okeechobee is not a huge town, it is not that small that something like this should not be considered. I would be thrilled if our elected offi cials would take the time to put their energy into something like this.

• The type of new stores I would like to see are ones that are not here, that you can’t buy it unless you had to drive to the coast to get.

• I think with the lake recovering and fi shing returning, an outlet self-contained shopping center would be a good draw. You have the fi shing for the men to come and enjoy. If you had a place for the wives to come to that would be good. A place with some nice shops and dining areas would be grand. A destination type area. This would be a draw for couples to come to.

• It’s amazing that elected offi cials are even being brought into this discussion. With all the noise about keeping govern-ment out of health care decisions, now we want to get them to decide what private en-terprise comes to town? The free economy system works like this -- if there is demand, someone will fi ll that demand. All you have to do is write a check, get a franchise and open your favorite store, but I can’t see where elected offi cials have anything to do with this. Economic development needs pri-vate dollars, not government intervention.

Obama and perjuryAs a 74-year-old, always voting Republi-

can, Obama’s election went badly for me; holding my nose voting for McCain only be-cause of Sarah Palin.

Obviously Obama’s intelligent, so there’s no reason he doesn’t know that violating his sworn oath of offi ce is perjury, a felony.

He swore to “support, uphold and defend the constitution.” Yet after being sworn in as president, he is on record saying “The Con-stitution is fl awed and my administration is working on a new bill of rights.”

So it’s clear where I’m coming from, most of my life’s been in law enforcement and criminal investigation. I’ve been sworn in as a municipal, county, a state offi cer and testi-fi ed numerable times in courts of law under oath. Every public offi cial must be sworn in before taking offi ce and the oath applies as long as they’re in public offi ce.

During my two terms as an NRA Director it was my privilege to know Charlton Heston

who I called “Moses” on a friendly personal basis. I’ll never forget his immortal words bringing the entire banquet hall to their feet with thunderous applause when he said, “The second amendment to the Constitu-tion is fi rst among equals and will ensure the others in perpetuity.”

Certainly Obama operating “the Chicago way” has plainly committed perjury, a fel-ony, and yes I’ll proudly sign an affi davit to that effect. But that’s only one leg that a stool needs to stand, the others are a courageous prosecutor and an honest judge and jury. My affi davit and the truth defi nitely need the others in order to stand.

the Whiskey Bent BBQ Team. Bub-Ba-Q took fi rst place again in the Pork

Category with the Forrest’s Fine Foods team placing second and the Florida Boys Teams placing third.

In the Brisket Category, First place went to Bub-Ba-Q, second to the Florida Skin –n-Bones Team and the Swamp Boys team placed third.

This year’s Top of the Lake BBQ Affair Grand Champion was Bub-Ba-Q with The Woodhouse Grill team taking the Reserve Grand Champion award.

Two Okeechobee High School girls quali-

fi ed Saturday for the weight lifting sectional tournament planned for Saturday at Port St. Lucie High School.

Sarah Payne, a junior, and Sam Fletcha, a sophomore, qualifi ed with lifts last Saturday during a competition at Fort Pierce Central.

Thirty-nine schools from South Florida from Okeechobee to Miami will compete in the sectional this weekend.

Payne broke a personal record with a lift of 90 pounds in the event known as the clean and jerk, similar to the lifts we watch during the summer Olympics. The other lift is the bench press.

Payne said she got into weight lifting as a way to make herself stronger for horse back riding. “My friends asked me to do this and I was like sure, all right,” she said. “It kept me in shape. I’m a competitive person and I re-ally got into it and stuck with it,” she said.

Payne competes in the 110 pound weight class. For most of the season her top lift was 80-85 pounds. Saturday she broke that record and had to do it to reach the sectional. Only 15 girls in South Florida in her weight class qualifi ed this year.

Fletcha said lifting weights has been quite an experience. She competes in the 154 pound weight class. She said she has done well in her fi rst year and improved a lot. “I’ve added to my maximum weight each week. At fi rst I did it to condition for softball. I’m pretty happy with myself for all I’ve accomplished.”

Other members of the girls squad this year include Darby Jones, April King and Yolani Borroto.

Coach Tyrone Smith applauded all of the girls for their efforts this year. “They have re-ally grown from the fi rst day of workouts. They’ve come so far from last year and previ-ous years. They want to work out, want to

get strong and bigger, and that’s what it’s allabout.”

Smith said he is working on the mentalside of the sport as well. He said some of thegirls get so nervous at meets that they don’tdo as well as they can. They have competedin seven meets this year.

Smith said he tells the girls that liftingweights will keep you injury free for othersports. He said the girls are often too anxiousas they want to lift weights everyday. He stat-ed the body needs days off to recover fromweight lifting.

“It’s been a great experience for me justbeing around these fi ve young ladies, gettingto know them, and to talk with them aboutweight lifting and the impact on their othersports. I think it helps them a lot in those oth-er sports,” he added.

Brian Rose had 18 points off the bench as Okeechobee High School raced to a 33-3 lead in the fi rst quarter and went on to wal-lop the John Carroll Golden Rams 77-24 at home on Saturday night.

Jonathan Hudoff had a game high 20 points for Okeechobee, (10-7). Okeechobee had a big night from behind the three point line as Rose hit fi ve three pointers, and sev-eral others including Austin Willard, Ricky Nieto and Hudoff had multiple three point baskets.

“It was awesome,” Rose said afterward. “It was like the most points I ever scored. The team was fi red up.”

Rose has played sparingly this year as the 11th man on the team. The senior hasn’t got-ten down on himself and said he tries to play his best when he gets a chance. He really en-joyed the crowd support he got on the home fl oor, “We assumed John Carroll would be a good team so we took shots. It felt good. It felt like I was a good player. I felt loved.”

John Carroll was overwhelmed from the start as Okeechobee used full court pressure to pick up a lot of easy baskets. They also were red hot from the fl oor as Nieto hit two threes, and Aaron Suarez and Matt Skipper hit three point baskets in the fi rst four min-utes of the game.

Okeechobee led 46-11 at the half and 65-19 after three quarters.

“I told the team it was important to get off to a good start,” Brahmans Coach Bryan Van Camp said, “I wanted them to press and play hard and not look ahead to our next game, and focus on tonight. They did a good job of doing that.”

The starting unit was so hot Okeechobee scored 33 points in the fi rst fi ve minutes, and then cooled off at that. Van Camp said it is hard to keep your focus and intensity in a lopsided game like that. The 53 point fi nal advantage was one of the largest margins for

Okeechobee in recent seasons.“The important thing is we did it the right

way. We took shots within our offense. You can’t fault a team for knocking down open shots,” he added.

There was a running clock for most of the second half. One high light play was a beau-tiful pass from Austin Willard to Ryan Osceo-la that resulted in a layup. Okeechobee also continued to hit three point baskets as Austin Willard and Hudoff both hit two long range shots in the third quarter.

Coach Van Camp said he is pleased with how the team reacted to a tough loss at home to Jensen Beach, “That game could have been a real momentum change in our season and we could have gotten down on ourselves. We’ve battled back now with two wins. That’s a nice way to rebound from a tough loss.”

Okeechobee travels to play Jensen Beach on Friday.

The Brahman freshman team improved to (4-0) with a 71-62 victory over John Car-roll in the fi rst game Saturday night.

Thaddricka Sanders had 19 points, 12 steals, and three assists and Garionna John-son added a triple double, 12 points, 10 re-bounds, and 10 steals, as Osceola Middle School defeated Yearling Middle school in a back and forth battle, 33-32, Monday in a game played at Okeechobee High School.

Yearling dominated play in the fi rst half of the basketball game while Osceola con-trolled the second half in the back and forth rivalry game.

Osceola Coach Cathy Jones, who has an-nounced her intentions to retire as basket-ball coach at the end of the year, said she was proud her team didn’t give up after a rough fi rst half.

“If we play our game, create turnovers, and make plays, we can get back into any game, that’s what we did tonight,” she said.

Jones said there is nothing more exciting than watching a group of girls pull them-selves together when they are down. “It was exciting. It was a win for all of us, not just the girls on the court, but the kids on the bench.”

Yearling led 8-7 after the fi rst quarter. Carly McCoin made a nice pass inside to Tabitha Trent for a basket for Yearling. John-son made a nice basket on a transition op-portunity for Osceola.

Yearling went on a run in the second quarter as McCoin continued to make good passes and play tight defense. Delaney Os-ceola, seven points, made a three point play inside to give Yearling a 16-11 lead. Yearling led 22-13 at the half and led by as many as 11 points in the second quarter.

Coach Erin Morrow said that might have been the best half of basketball her team has played this year, “I don’t think we let down in the second half. We just excelled in the fi rst half. I was excited to see that. I think foul trouble really hurt us.”

Osceola came out like a different team in the third quarter as Johnson and Sanders, admitted best friends in school, used their familiarity with each other to get constant steals and easy shot opportunities.

Sanders said she really wasn’t motivated early in the game and didn’t want to play un-til her teammates got her fi red up at halftime. “I had a bad day at school, I was sleepy and cranky. My teammates talked it out, they told me they wanted to win and I felt I needed to help them out,” she said.

Yearling led 27-26 as they were outscored by the Warriors 14-4 in the decisive third quarter.

Yearling didn’t relax and kept things close throughout the fourth quarter. McCoin hit a pair of free throws for a 29-26 lead. Sanders hit a 12 footer to cut the lead to 29-28. Sand-ers two free throws gave Osceola the lead 30-29. Johnson added a free throw for Osce-ola and McCoin a free throw for Yearling to make it 31-30. The teams traded free throws down the stretch and no body made a fi eld goal in the fi nal fi ve minutes of the game.

Sanders said bragging rights motivated her down the stretch. “Of my gosh, words can’t even explain how I feel,” she said. “I’m so happy.”

Coach Morrow said she was proud of the

way her team reacted to playing in a large venue for the fi rst time. She said the atmo-sphere was outstanding and supportive for both teams. “We got the girls mentally ready for it and they did really well. They played hard and held their composure.”

Once McCoin fouled out, Morrow said Yearling didn’t have the ball handling skills they needed to get good shot opportunities.

“They were also in the bonus and got two free throws every time we fouled. It was un-fortunate that they hit their free throws but props to them for doing that.”

McCoin led Yearling with nine points and fi ve assists.

Yearling hosted Sebastian on Tuesday af-ternoon while Osceola will host the Brighton Charter School on Thursday afternoon.

Yearling Middle School has rarely lost to Os-ceola Middle School in boys basketball since Okeechobee’s second middle school opened and this years’ Yearling team didn’t want that streak to end.

Felton Johnson scored 25 points as the YMS Yearlings defeated the OMS Warriors 49-35 Monday in a game played at Okeechobee High School.

The game attracted one of the larger crowds of the winter to the high school as Athletic Directors for both schools agreed to play Yearling’s home game at the high school because there is more room and seating.

“We are looking into doing this as an an-nual thing,” Yearling Athletic Director Dylan Tedders said.

Yearling led 9-6 after the fi rst quarter as

Johnson had a three point play underneath to fi re up his teammates.

Sylvester Butler, who had 15 points for Osceola, kept his team close in the second quarter with a couple of three point baskets. Yearling held a 20-18 lead at the half.

Yearling Coach Efrain Ochoa said the two games with Osceola this year have been very competitive, “We wanted this game in the worst way. We showed up and we fi nished at the end which is important.”

Ochoa praised Johnson for his effort in the game as he noted Johnson knew this was his time.

Johnson admitted he had a lot of friends and family in the crowd and wanted to shine for them,

“I feel very proud because it’s been a tradi-tion that Yearling beats Osceola. We’ve beat-en them for seven straight years,” he said. “I didn’t want to mess that up in my 8th grade year. I wanted to make a difference.”

Johnson said he had something to prove to his detractors and to himself as he reached a season high in points.

“You got to have heart to do everything on the court. There are a lot of haters. You’ve got to prove them wrong. It’s better to prove something to yourself and have confi dence in yourself. I try to get better as much as I can,” he said.

Osceola Coach Mike Wharin said the key to the game was Johnson. In the fi rst meeting Johnson was in foul trouble and didn’t play a huge role. Monday it was different as Johnson got a lot of easy buckets as he simply hustled down the fl oor.

Yearling began to take control late in the third quarter after Eddie Neal hit a jumper to pull Osceola within two points. Yearling led 32-27 after the three quarters.

Yearling went on a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter as Treshon Pierre and Johnson scored baskets. Isaichs Rutherford three point basket gave Yearling a 41-31 advantage.

Osceola couldn’t get any closer as they shot poorly in the fi nal quarter.

“I thought the effort was good tonight,” Wharin said, “We just came up a little short.”

Both coaches and teams visited with OHS varsity Coach Bryan Van Camp after the game as he gave the group a pep talk about their basketball future.

“We loved the venue and it brought a lot of excitement to the game,” Coach Ochoa said, “I think the freshman team will be strong next year.”

Osceola Middle School Lady Warriors Coach Cathy Jones announced her retire-ment from coaching before the Lady War-riors took to the fl oor Wednesday at Sebas-tian Middle School.

Sebastian went on to win 52-18 as Coach Brian Turner coached his fi rst offi cial game.

Thaddricka Sanders led Osceola with eight points. Garionna Johnson added four points and excellent defense. Johnson was praised for her effort and passionate play by the coaches.

“This is the culture we are trying to set into place. Effort is paramount to success. We need to continue the growth process next year as well. I don’t think this is a one-year project but more of a journey that will end once we can put the whole puzzle to-gether,” Turner said.

Chelsea Wherin was also praised for her

hustle and hard work on the defensive end of the fl oor.

“In middle school it is so important to prepare the students for the next level that sometimes wins and losses take a back seat to the bigger picture,” he added.

The boys were plagued by foul trouble to some key players down the stretch as they lost to Sebastian, 37-26. Eddie Neal and Christian Crews both had eight points. Luis Fonseca was praised for his solid defense.

Coach Mike Wharin said the team ran an up-tempo offense that appeared to catch Se-bastian off guard for the fi rst three quarters. Sebastian took control in the fourth quar-ter as several Warrior starters were on the bench with foul trouble.

“That’s a learning experience for them. When players do get in foul trouble and sit the bench, coaches are still talking them and some valuable coaching is going on,” he added.

Wharin said he wants his team to real-

ize they must play hard for 24 minutes every night and provide a challenge to their oppo-nent. “We want to be known as a team that will hustle the whole game.”

Osceola took on Yearling Monday after-noon at Okeechobee High School. Games begin at 4:30 p.m.

Yearling boys split a pair of games this week. They defeated Sebastian at home on Tuesday and lost by one point to Gifford on Wednesday.
