  • State Game Land 216 is a single contiguous tract of approximately 488 acres in rural western Lawrence County within the Pennsylvania Game Commission's Northwest Region (Wildlife Management Unit 1A).

The Game Land is easily accessed, located south of State Route 108 and west of US Route 19, the Game Land is fronted on the west by Game Farm Rd., on the South by Harlansburg-Rose Point Rd., and is bisected by County Line Road which runs east and west. Six parking lots are maintained and foot travel is welcome on 4 miles of gated road. The farthest interior point from a parking area or gate is 0.2 miles.

SGL 216 is primarily forested, with the majority of the forest cover in northern hardwoods. The second most prevalent habitat type is old-field reverting shrubland, followed by cultivated openings. Invasive plant species are present on most areas of the Game Land. Soils are generally poor to fair for cultivated crops, but support early successional and forested cover.

SGL 216 is utilized primarily for small game and turkey hunting. Some woodcock hunting occurs, as well as hunting and trapping for raccoon, beaver, mink, red and gray fox, and eastern coyote. Deer are also hunted. Hiking, bird watching and cross-country skiing are lawful recreational activities that occur occasionally. This gameland has one short, 0.75-mile horse and bike trail.

Current habitat conditions present an opportunity to manage for American woodcock, a PA Species of Concern (SOC). Non-game bird SOC include the blue-winged warbler, brown thrasher, and scarlet tanager. Additional management should also favor the Indiana bat, a federally endangered species. Other non-game SOC mammals include the hoary bat and northern water shrew.

    SPORTSMEN'S RECREATION MAP

Each time a hunter buys a hunting license, the

money he spends goes toward many facets of

wildlife management. Since 1920, close to a million

and a half aces of State Game Lands have been

acquired with these funds. Each year nearly

$7,000,000 is spent to improve wildlife habitat.

Habitat improvements enhance living conditions for

non-game birds and mammals as well as those

species which are hunted. Pennsylvania hunters

willingly share these lands with the non-hunting

public, and with few exceptions, State Game Lands

are open for general use year round. Surveys

indicate that hunting accounts for only thirty-five

percent of game land usage. The remaining sixty-

five percent is used by the general public for non-

    hunting purposes.

“Working Together for Wildlife” is a Game

    Commission program providing everyone an

opportunity to help support wildlife management in

the areas for endangered and non-game animals.

Monies derived from the “Working Together for

Wildlife” Program are being used in Pennsylvania to

re-introduce the osprey, river otter, bald eagle,

peregrine falcon and provide habitat for other birds

and mammals indigenous to the Commonwealth.

Construction placement of blue bird houses on State

Game Lands provides needed homes for this

beautiful songbird. Islands in the Susquehanna River

have been set aside as propagations areas for non-

game shore birds. Numerous other projects are

planned on State Game Lands and other public
