2018 STATE ADVISOR OF THE YEAR
REBECCA DICKERSONEldon Career Center
Rebecca Dickerson has taught health occupations at Eldon Career Center at the Eldon R-I School District for the past ten years. Prior to becoming a teacher, Mrs. Dickerson was a registered nurse for 16 years, and employed in a wide variety of agencies as an R.N., including labor and delivery, home health, and at a physician’s clinic. Her level of expertise as a nurse made her the perfect fit as a high school instructor. Her program is one that is highly respected and sought after.
Mrs. Dickerson prepares her students for a wide array of healthcare careers. The students that enroll in her program are from a variety of backgrounds academically, socially and economically. The blend of students would seem to be a difficult task for most educators, however, Mrs. Dickerson embraces each student’s abilities and interests and is able to cater to their future plans. It is not uncommon for Mrs. Dickerson to receive correspondence from her students with the toughest home lives reporting on the success they have achieved beyond graduation. She empowers each and every student to reach their goals.
As a SkillsUSA advisor, she embodies the SkillsUSA framework inside and outside of her classroom. Each of the personal, workplace and technical skills grounded in academics are embedded into her curriculum and into her life. It is without question that her students are prepared for the world of work upon completion of her health occupations program.

The Chapter Excellence Program honors chapter achievement relative to SkillsUSA’s framework of developing personal, workplace and technical skills. The framework actualizes SkillsUSA’s mission “to empower members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens.” It also serves as the blueprint for career readiness — our ultimate goal as an organization. By centering on industry demands, the framework builds the foundation for relevant and intentional student learning and employability skill development.
Paramount to framework success is the implementation of an effective program of work — SkillsUSA’s planning tool for chapters. By participating in program of work activities, SkillsUSA chapters become conduits for meaningful student growth. Students take part in the planning, organization and implementation of activities, which develops their skills and builds character. The CEP recognizes these efforts by offering every chapter an opportunity to attain measurable competencies in pursuit of framework objectives.
