3. Molokai Public Library Reopens with new CarpetingMolokai Public Library reopened March 21 following the completion of a carpetreplacement project. While the Library was closed, staff members provided limitedservices utilizing the bookmobile and carport area. Library friends and patrons whovisited the interim site were delighted with the temporary outdoor location: acomfortable, secluded area to sit, browse, read, and borrow materials. Singing birdsfrom around the yard and an array of colorful tropical plants contributed to the enjoyablesurroundings.

4. Electronic Book CollectionsHSPLS continues to grow its electronic resources collections, including ebooks, whichcan be downloaded from our website (www.hawaii.lib.overdrive.com) to your readingdevice, where it will remain for three weeks before returning automatically to ourcollection. The attachment, which requires constant updating due to the rapid changesin this developing market, lists nine portable e-reader devices, and a variety ofinformation about each one.

5. State and Federal Tax Forms are Available at Most HSPLS LibrariesHawaii State Tax Forms are available at all our public libraries once again this year, courtesy of a continuing partnership between the Hawaii State Public Library Systemand the State Department of Taxation. Most branches have Federal tax forms as well.Hawaii state tax forms, Federal forms and forms from other states may be accessedand downloaded remotely around the clock via our online database LegalForms. Thisdatabase may be accessed at www.librarieshawaii.orc: under “e-Resources” click on“Other Databases,” scroll down to click on “LegalForms,” then click on the appropriatelink to individual state or federal tax offices.

6. Tax Check-Off Box CampaignSince 2004, Hawaii taxpayers have been able to support Hawaii’s public libraries bydonating $2.00 from an individual state tax return or $4.00 from a joint return. Over theyears, thousands of taxpayers have donated $500,000 to HSPLS, and these funds haveenabled us to purchase books published about Hawaii as well as additional copies ofmany children’s books and other materials. These donations have allowed us topurchase materials which we would otherwise be unable to provide for our patrons, andwe encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to make a donation tosupport Hawaii’s public libraries. Mahalo to all who have donated in the past.
