1. Introduction
Turkey’s annual mean temperature in January 2020 was 3.3°C. This value is 0.6°C above from 1981-
2010 normal (2.7°C). January 2020 was 22’nd warmest January since 50 years.
In general, most of the country had above normal temperatures except Aegean Region and
some locations in the eastern part of the country. Temperature anomalies in some Eastern
locations were greater than 3.0°C
Monthly mean temperatures of January 2020 were above its normal but below last year’s
value.
In January, the lowest temperature was observed at Özalp, Van with -28.0ºC and the highest
temperature at Dalaman, Muğla with 20.4ºC.
Turkey mean areal precipitation in January 2020 was 61.3 mm. This value is 6.8 % below
from 1981-2010’s normal (65.8mm).
Geographically, January 2020 precipitation was above normal in Mediterranean, Black Sea
and Istanbul, but below it in Aegean, Eastern Anatolia and Thrace Regions.
January precipitations in 2020 were below from the 1981-2010’s normal in most of the basin
except Marmara, Antalya, Western Black Sea, Yeşilırmak, Konya, Eastern Mediterranean,
Seyhan and Eastern Black Sea basin.
There are 66 extreme events have been reported in January 2020 in Kardelen Database. Most
hazardous extreme events recorded in January 2020 were storm and tornado (38%), heavy
snow (32%), heavy rain and floods (23%). Rare extremes are Frost and lightning (3%), and
avalanche (1%). One person died in the avalanche, two of the three lost people were rescued
and one is still missing due to avalanche happen in Pozantı, Adana on 6 January 2020.

2. Temperature
Turkey’s annual mean temperature in January 2020 was 3.3°C. This value is 0.6°C above from 1981-
2010 normal (2.7°C) (Fig.2.3).

In general, most of the country had above normal temperatures except Aegean Region and
some locations shown at figure 2.2. Temperature anomalies in some Eastern locations were
greater than 3.0°C (Fig.2.2). In January, the lowest temperature was observed at Özalp, Van
with -28.0ºC and the highest temperature at Dalaman, Muğla with 20.4ºC.

Monthly mean temperatures of January 2020 were above its normal but below last year’s
value (Fig. 2.3).
3. Precipitation
Turkey mean areal precipitation in January 2020 was 61.3 mm. This value is 6.8 % below
from 1981-2010’s normal (65.8mm) (Figure 3.1).

3.1. Water Basin precipitation
January precipitations in 2020 were below from the 1981-2010’s normal in most of the basin
except Marmara, Antalya, Western Black Sea, Yeşilırmak, Konya, Eastern Mediterranean,
Seyhan and Eastern Black Sea basin (Figure 3.3).

4. Extreme Meteorological Events
Sixty six extreme events have been reported in January 2020 in Kardelen Database.
