Million Women Mentors is pleased to announce the release of the MWM State of the States: A Report to the

Nation 2016-2017, highlighting the progress and efforts of 39 states over the past year.

Million Women Mentors is a national movement with the goal of providing one million Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Math (STEM) mentoring relationships to girls and women, helping them to choose, persist and

succeed in STEM programs and careers. MWM is an initiative of STEMconnector in collaboration with over 60+

national partners, 45+ corporate sponsors, and 39+ state teams.

OUR GOALS ARE TO:

SINCE THE LAUNCH IN 2014 MWM HAS BEEN ● Leading a national call to action for corporations to join MWM and capture metrics around mentoring

girls and young women in STEM.

● Providing an automated, scalable and easy-to-use platform to eliminate barriers and facilitate large

numbers of STEM professionals (male and female) with tools to become effective mentors, in

partnership with 60+ national organizations reaching over 30 million girls.

● Matching participating corporations to scaled non-profit partners and educational institutions in need

of STEM mentors and role models.

● Building and supporting state teams to execute MWM at the local level.

● Recognizing best practices and “who is doing what” in mentoring girls (middle school through careers)

in STEM.

Mentoring with Million Women Mentors High quality mentoring and sponsorship programs that connect girls and young women with STEM

professionals can help counter negative stereotypes because girls see firsthand that females thrive and be

successful in STEM careers.

Whether connected to a school, an after-school program, a

postsecondary institution, or the workplace, mentoring can

both reduce factors that lead attrition and increase those

that support retention, keeping educational and career

interests on track for success in STEM.

In order to have impact, we prefer our mentors to spend at

least 20 hours working with his or her mentee(s) over the

course of one year. Our suggested pathways for mentoring

are in the graphic to the right. We encourage organizations

to look at additional non-traditional mentoring activities like STEM events, summer camps, and career

counseling.

Why Million Women Mentors

We know that growth in STEM jobs over the last 10 years has been three times greater than non-STEM jobs.

Today 80% of the fastest growing occupations depend on STEM Skills but women are all too often largely left

out of this conversation. We see the need to get more more girls and young women interested in STEM and

also help retain women in their STEM careers as interest in STEM for girls is declining and nearly 50% of women

drop out of their STEM Careers in the first 10 years.

WHY MILLION WOMEN MENTORS

Page 5: State of the States - Million Women Mentors · Million Women Mentors is pleased to announce the release of the MWM State of the States: A Report to the Nation 2016-2017, highlighting

Mentoring has been proven to be an effective way to achieve the goals of Million Women Mentors, yet only 6%

of female students interested in pursuing STEM are encouraged to do so by a mentor. Not only does mentoring

help counter negative stereotypes surrounding women in STEM professions but it also has positive effects on

the mentors themselves with increased retention rates of mentors who participated in company mentoring

programs, higher promotion rates, and more salary grade changes.

MWM STATE TEAMS

Million Women Mentors is organized by states, with state teams leading local individual efforts with 39+ states currently engaged. State leadership is able to make a pledge, develop a steering committee, and then work to reach their pledge goals. Each state team works to engage companies, nonprofits, and higher education to support girls and women in STEM through mentoring. State teams consist of 1-2 chairs and 5-10 steering committee members and, in most cases, are all volunteer.

CREATING A PLAN AND MAKING A STATE PLEDGE: 1. Establish State Chair(s)

2. Host Steering Committee Introductory Webinar to engage members across the state

3. Work with state team to create a pledge goal for mentoring relationships for the state

4. Host Planning Call/Meeting to determine next steps for the committee

5. Secure Honorary Chair to help promote the effort - typically Lt. Governor or Governor

6. Survey current mentoring activity within the state and participate in the Be Counted! Campaign

MWM STATE TEAMS

Page 8: State of the States - Million Women Mentors · Million Women Mentors is pleased to announce the release of the MWM State of the States: A Report to the Nation 2016-2017, highlighting

STATE LEADERS SUPPORT: Each state is encouraged to select a leader or two who can serve as a liaison to the national MWM team. A

monthly State Leaders Call is held with these individuals to share best practices between states and each

month an invited guest is featured to present a topic of interest to the states. National updates are also

included in these state calls. Each year states are also able to participate in small working group calls to

encourage the exchange of ideas and strategies. Additional resources are created based on these calls and

conversations.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGIES

State efforts are organized in a variety of ways based on the needs of the state and the resources available to

leadership teams. Generally, the movement fits in with the current work of the organizations of those involved.

Some states have an effort largely housed inside an MWM Sponsor organization, where others have an

appointed leader from the Lt. Governor’s office. Others teams function out of higher education institutions or

simply have a dedicated STEM professional with the bandwidth to grow the movement.

SUGGESTED GROUPS TO SERVE ON THE STATE STEERING COMMITTEE: 1. Universities

2. Community Colleges

3. Educators

4. Corporations/Businesses

5. Professional Organizations – Particularly Focused On Women

6. Non-Profits Focused On Girls

STATE REPORTS

As a report to the Nation we have captured the excellent state efforts for 2016 and the projected plans for each

state that has made a pledge since 2014, and worked with the MWM team to create a one page report to

summarize their efforts and plans. Each report contains the state’s pledge, the list of those on the steering

committee, honorary chair (if they have one), specific actions, results of these actions and plans for MWM state

efforts for 2016-2017. This past year Million Women Mentors was able to secure leadership or reconstitute

leadership in 8 states making this the biggest report yet!

The activities that occurred can be broadly categorized as media events, meetings and conferences, company

and educational institution engagement, legislation and political activities. It is interesting and impressive the

list of activities each of the states has engaged in since MWM began. It is even more impressive what the states

are continuing to build.

These reports will be shared broadly to allow the states to learn from each other and share within their own

states as to what they have accomplished. State Reports included are:

HONORARY CHAIRS

The title of Honorary Chair is used in the states to recognize leaders who have stepped up to provide their

name and office to support the effort of Million Women Mentors in their states. Included in this ever-growing

list is:

1. Iowa – Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds,

National Honorary Chair for MWM

2. Virginia – Governor Terry McAuliffe

3. Rhode Island – Governor Gina Raimondo

4. Alabama – Lt. Governor Kay Ivey

5. Arkansas – Lt. Governor Tim Griffin

6. Idaho – Lt. Governor Brad Little

MillionWomenMentors.org Web Portal

The MWM website is designed to facilitate and capture the efforts that are going on with local, regional and

states. In Fall of 2016, the newest version of the now mobile-friendly Million Women Mentors website rolled

out with a host of new features and the functionality integral to the Million Women Mentors effort.

The Website Allows Users To:

● Connect mentors and mentor-providing organizations

with girl-and-women-serving organizations, providing

a safe environment for mentoring

● Log mentoring relationships to keep track of your

progress towards 20 hours

● Encourage organizations at all levels to engage in

mentoring through pledges

● Count ongoing and completed mentoring activities

● Collaborate with multiple mentors, companies and

organizations on mentoring program initiatives by

sharing resources and documents through our new

community feature.

COMPANIES AND MENTOR PROVIDERS

Get started by creating your account and pledging to mentor. After completing your profile, you

can send your employees a custom registration link so all of their mentoring counts to your

pledge. Then keep track of your organization’s activities with our reports!

NON-PROFITS AND MENTEE-PROVIDING ORGANIZATIONS

Create your account by selecting Girl-Serving Organization. Tell us what kinds of mentor

relationships your organization needs and request mentors. Create communities with your

mentors to share resources about your program’s mentoring.

STATE LEADERS

The MWM team has provided a single state leader account for each state. The state leader account allows

states to dynamically track the MWM efforts, connect with others in the state involved in MWM and report out

to state political leaders and others on the results of the activities. Webinars are available to review all of this

upon request.

STATE PAGES

Each State Leadership team is able to manage their own state page which allows teams to highlight upcoming

state events, activities and STEM programming. State Pages provide information about how to get involved

with the state effort and who to contact on the state team. Contact [email protected] to get

yours!

BE COUNTED! CAMPAIGN

Currently, the amount of mentoring occurring in the nation is largely unknown. We especially do not know how

many women and girls are being mentored in STEM specifically. The MWM Be Counted! Campaign encourages

individuals / organizations / corporations to record the work they are already doing to mentor girls and women

in STEM to aggregate and amplify the voice of STEM mentoring. The MWM website allows you to quickly

record these mentoring relationships.

We have made it EASY! Record the mentoring you are doing just by following the next 3 steps. 1. Sign in or sign

up and create your account. 2. Click Add Mentoring. 3. Fill out the information about the mentoring you are

already doing!

BE Counted! Campaign in Action:

Be Counted! States Inventory with MWM-IA, MWM-IN, and MWM-TN: These states examined STEM

programming available for girls and women in their state and were able to record thousands in mentoring

efforts. MWM-IA nearly completed their pledge goal of 5,000, MWM-IN was able to record over 1,000 new

mentoring relationships, and MWM-TN was surpassed their pledge goal with over 17,000 completed

mentoring relationships.

The national organization hosts science events that touch on

every letter of STEM and provide an ideal platform for

mentoring by female professionals. Their participation in the

MWM Be Counted! Campaign has allowed them to record

over 100,000 completed mentoring relationships so far.

As one of our sponsors and leads for MWM-AR effort, they

were able to launch their effort in a big way resulting in over

500 mentoring relationships in the first few months of

participation.

As part of the Be Counted! Campaign, TATA was able to

examine several different types of mentoring relationships

and activities within the company. Because of this, they

found they had facilitated over 32,000 mentoring

relationships through internal mentoring programs and

external mentoring activities throughout the company.
