A Message from the PA Odyssey of the Mind Association

Director Welcome to the 2014 Pennsylvania State Finals tournament. I hope today will be an exciting and inspiring adventure for you. Congratulations to all of the teams who've earned the honor of competing here today. You're sure to be amazed & captivated by their performances. Each team has faced many challenges along the way, but with determination and perseverance they have forged their unique solutions to this year's problems. Truly, they are all winners and we salute their creativity & their accomplishments. Pennsylvania's Odyssey of the Mind program is run entirely by volunteers and I wish to offer my sincerest appreciation to all of those volunteers who have helped make today a wonderful success: the officials, coaches, Problem Captains, Regional Directors, parents, teachers and the many Berwick community volunteers. I offer my deepest gratitude to the Berwick Area School District for graciously hosting our tournament and to the district's administration, staff and support personnel for their assistance and support. A very heartfelt "thank you" goes to our Tournament Director, Jerry Owens, our Site Coordinator, Judy Micheletti, and the local Organizing Committee for their planning efforts throughout the year and their skillful coordination of today's activities. Special thanks to Mike Cunningham for his mastery in creating our program book each year. On a personal note, to the Board of Directors of Creativity Unlimited in Pennsylvania (the organization at the heart of our Odyssey of the Mind program) I am enormously grateful for your unwavering dedication to our program. Throughout the year, you have given so generously of your time & talents, sharing your creative ideas and most of all your enthusiasm, to create a program that is recognized by others as one of the finest in the world. I salute you, as you continue to inspire me. I am deeply honored and proud to be a part of such an incredible team!

The Odyssey of the Mind Program

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving competition based

on the belief that the mind, like the body, can be trained through

practice and exercise to reach its fullest potential. Participation requires

dedication and diligence, but it is also a fun-filled and rewarding experience. From Odyssey of the Mind, students can learn that team

work is essential, that risk-taking is valued, and that it is a worthwhile

effort to strive for excellence.

Scoring What you will see is each team

presenting its solution to a long term

problem in order to earn a maximum of

200 points for the problem solution and

50 points for style. The teams have been

given the problems well in advance of

the competition. During the day, all

teams will also take part in spontaneous

problems. The teams do not know in

advance what these problems will be.

This section of the competition can earn

a team a maximum of 100 points. Scores for the long term problem

(200), style (50), and spontaneous (100) are then pro-rated against the

other teams in that division and totaled. Scoring cannot be finalized

until all teams in a division have finished competing. Judges also need

time to evaluate and double check their scoring. This can often lead to a

delay in the starting of the awards ceremony. If this does occur, we ask

you to be patient. The students have worked long and hard on this

competition.

Pennsylvania Odyssey of the Mind

Pennsylvania competed at the first World Finals 1979-1980. The state of Pennsylvania

was one of the first associations to be chartered. There are now approximately 14,000 Pennsylvania students participating in the program. Many Odyssey of the Mind scholarships have been awarded to our high school seniors. For competition purposes the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is divided into six regions. Regional Directors and their Boards are responsible for training coaches and judges, providing teams with information throughout the year and coordinating the regional and state tournaments. The individuals below are all volunteers who have contributed

hundreds of hours to the success of Pennsylvania’s Odyssey of the Mind program, which is recognized as one of the best in the World.

Driver’s Test

For this problem, teams will design, build, and drive a

vehicle that will travel a course where a student driver

attempts to complete tasks in

order to pass a driver’s test. The

vehicle will travel using one

propulsion system and then

travel in reverse using a different

propulsion system. The vehicle

will encounter a directional

signal and have a Global

Positioning System (GPS) that

talks to the driver. The team will create a theme for the

presentation that incorporates the vehicle, a driver’s test, a

student, and the talking GPS.

The Not-So-Haunted-House

The team's problem is to create and present an original

performance that includes a "pop-up-style" not-so-haunted

"house" where four special effects

take place. The intent of the special

effects will be to scare others, but

they will produce a different result

instead. The performance will

include at least one character that

experiences the special effects and a

narrator who relays the experiences

to the audience. It will also include a

surprise ending. The special effects will be scored for

originality and engineering. Cost limit: $145

It’s How We Rule

In this Classics problem, teams will re-create a King's Court from

history and make their own Royal Court set in an original

kingdom at a different time and place. The Historic Court will

issue a decree that fits in with its history, while the team-created

Royal Court will issue a decree that changes an everyday

behavior for the people in the kingdom. The

Historic court will be composed as the team

wishes, but the original Royal Court will be

made up of a leader, a minstrel that performs

a song while playing a team-created

instrument, and a jester that makes fun of the

leader. The performance will include puppets

and a Peoplet (a person portrayed as a

puppet), and will be scored for humor.

The Stackable Structure

Teams will design and build a structure

made up of separate components

stacked on top of one another. The

structure components will be made of

only balsa wood and glue, and will be

tested by balancing and supporting

weights after they are stacked. Teams

will be scored for the number of

components they use in their final

Seeing is Believing

In this problem teams are to create and present an original

performance about a community that feels threatened by

something in a location it has never

visited. The community townspeople

will use a creative method to select

one or more Travelers to visit and

explore the location. While at the

location, a Traveler will use a means

of communication to send a message

home to convince the community that

there is nothing to fear. The performance will also include a

narrator character, two rhymes about the travels, and a

moving set piece. Cost limit: $125

Odyssey of the Mind Special Awards

Ranatra Fusca The Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award represents the essence of the

Odyssey of the Mind program. It is presented to teams or

individuals who exhibit exceptional creativity either in some

aspect of the problem solution or through an extraordinary idea

beyond the problem solution.

A successful solution to the problem is not a criterion for winning

the award; the award is a way to acknowledge and encourage

creative thinking and risk taking. Many Omers and coaches

regard the Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award as being equal to, or

more prestigious then winning a first place trophy.

OMER's Award

OMER's award is given to teams or individuals who exemplify

the spirit and philosophy of Odyssey of the Mind or who

demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship, exemplary behavior or

exceptional talent.

It can be given to coaches, team members, parents, officials, or

others who serve as positive examples or role models by their

actions and words or to team members who exhibit exceptional

skill or creativity.

Line Mountain Scholarship Pennsylvania Odyssey of the Mind honors the memory of the young people who died in the cabin fire in Madisonburg, PA on March 22,

1998. We have established a scholarship to honor their memory and

remember their smiles, laughter, and creative spirits. We thank their families and coaches for allowing them to touch our lives . . . if only for

a brief moment. Toby Wiest, David Wiest, Amanda Wehry, Toni Wehry,

Odyssey of the Mind Homestay 2014

ODYSSEY TEAMS, WE

NEED YOU The Homestay program was established to let U.S. and International

teams have an opportunity to experience each other's cultures for a few

days after World Finals. The International teams stay in the homes of U.S. teams, providing first hand friendship experiences for both groups.

This rewarding experience is a "memory of a lifetime" and ALL

Odyssey teams are eligible even if you do not compete at World Finals. World Finals will be May 28 to May 31 at Iowa State

University, and many international teams would love to come to your

home for a Homestay experience.

Homestay Program Fact Sheet

1. All Odyssey teams/families are eligible for the program.

2. Homestay families provide lodging, meals, and some planned activities

for their international guests.

3. Biggest Cost; Time spent with your guests! Teams cover their own costs

and shopping.

4. Generally Homestays last for 5 to 7 days following World Finals. The first

day is usually lost in travel from World Finals to the host team’s

hometown and the last day is devoted to departure, so a 5 day stay really

allows for 3 full days for the teams to be together.

5. Transportation: families will need to transport teams once they get to your

area. Odyssey friends/families who are unable to host international team

members in their homes can really help out by helping with driving/

transporting people to activities.

6. It is usually helpful if at least one host family can be home during the day

to help coordinate daytime activities. This does not have to be the same

family each day.

7. Biggest reward? Making new friends from around the World!

If you would like to host members of the International Odyssey community

while making new friends, contact:
