PROPERTIES

A sample of hydrogen has a volume of 1.2 liters. The sample is a colorless, odorless gas. When a sample is added to a sample of oxygen and a spark is struck, an explosion occurs and (if the container doesn’t break) water can be found as a product of the explosion.

CHEMICAL or PHYSICAL CHANGES?

• Making an iron bar into a magnet

• Burning a sample of carbon

• Ice cubes “shrink” over time in the freezer

• Steel forms red rust when exposed to air

• Sugar dissolves in water

CHEMICAL or PHYSICAL CHANGES?

• Heating a sample of ice until it melts

• Grape juice ferments into wine

• Tearing a sheet of paper into tiny pieces

• Fusion of hydrogen to helium in the sun
