Statewide ITS Strategic Plan
and Architecture
Illinois Public Transportation AssociationBoard Meeting
01-11-2005Scott Lee
IDOT ITS Technical Coordinator
What is ITS?• Transportation Projects where
Technology is being implemented and Integrated.– The National Architecture has a great
listing of ITS functions and services http://itsarch.iteris.com/
– A lot of projects already become part of a traditional construction job. Those projects where electronic data and data integration are a focus are ITS.
– Security is the latest area. GIS, Maintenance DB’s, Traveler Information and Traffic Management
Project Overview• Statewide and Regional Workshops
– Data Collection – Survey and Scenarios
• Overview of the Architecture Process
• Turbo Architecture 3.0 Training• Making ITS Part of Regional
Transportation Planning
• Statewide Strategic Plan
Consultant Roles and Responsibilities
• Facilitate the Process• Provide the Starter File and Technical
Support as needed.• Build the Statewide Architecture and
Strategic Plan based on ‘our’ needs and goals.
• The team should be able to answer most questions at most levels.
• The team and the ITS Office will focus support to the Champions
Consultant Roles and Responsibilities
• Regions are defined.• Regions can choose to break out an
Architecture as needed.• We expect Rural Area needs to be
encompassed in the Statewide Architecture.
Keys to the Regional Architectures…
• Identify key stakeholders and interrelationships
• Describe required activities or functions
• Define interconnections and interdependencies between functions
• Develop a blueprint for integration of systems – Define Projects
Architecture Development Process
How does this apply to Projects?
• Projects are typically defined by need.• FHWA via its programs has committed
to the Systems Engineering Process.– Allows for methodical process to define an
implementation project.
• Identification of addition integration options
• Consideration of options and standards
