21. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
1. Core modules are essential to learners' achievement of their target award, often in respect of meeting professional standards, and are excluded from the application of condonement by assessment boards. 2. Compulsory modules are prescribed modules but are not core and therefore are condonable.3. Optional modules are offered within programmes to provide an element of choice and variety within the programme curriculum. They do not form part of the compulsory curriculum requirements for the programme. The availability of optional modules may vary from year to year which means that not all optional modules may be available in any given year and will be subject to the module achieving minimum student numbers. Students will be required to make optional choices on an annual basis for each academic year of study. Module Code Module Title Credit

23. LEARNING AND TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
24. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
The philosophy which underpins the MA Film and Media is a desire to provide students with a learning experience that encourages and stimulates their intellectual curiosity; supports their development as autonomous scholars and individuals; challenges them intellectually and personally; and equips them with the necessary skills and abilities to engage with lifelong learning, study and enquiry, and to compete successfully for a wide variety of employment. MA Film and Media will normally be delivered through three-hour campus-based group sessions, open to full-time and part-time students. Full-time students will normally attend two or three three-hour group sessions per week and part-time students one or two three-hour group session per week. These group sessions will be supported by VLE provision, tutorials and independent research promoting autonomous learning. Blackboard will be used as an additional support for modules. Delivery of modules will involve a range of teaching and learning strategies. The programme deliberately employs a variety of approaches in order to provide a stimulating and challenging experience for students. Lectures will, through presentations by a subject specialist, be used to transmit knowledge and understanding; to help students to appreciate the different critical and scholarly approaches that have been developed in the study and understanding of Film and Media; to provide a synthesis of the diverse concepts and ideas with which students will be expected to engage; and to provide a base from which students will be expected to develop their own original and independent scholarly positions. Seminars will, through general and small-group discussion facilitated by the seminar tutor, enable students to develop subject-specific skills, clarify concepts, raise questions, engage with theoretical ideas and identify trends and patterns. Seminars will, through directed discussion and analysis of primary, secondary and critical sources, assist students in the progression from undergraduate to postgraduate study and will enhance students' self-directed learning. Intellectualand subject-specific skills will be further developed through students' independent engagement with relevant module materials on Blackboard. Seminars will form the basis for subsequent investigation and/or coursework assessment andwill be linked to Blackboard to which students will be encouraged to turn for subsequent activity, online discussion, and post-seminar support. Through seminar discussions, tutorials and Blackboard, students will demonstrate their overall progress in skills development, knowledge and understanding, together with their current degree of independence. Independent learning strategies will be used in the programme to supplement lectures and seminars. These will take various forms including directed reading of module primary and secondary texts and structured research activities.
22aii. Student Learning Journey
Page 9
All students will be assisted in the completion of their summative assessment by clear guidance from module tutors and, most directly, from their dissertation supervisors. In all modules, students will have the opportunity to discuss the relevant Learning Outcomes with their tutor and/or supervisor and determine how best to meet those Learning Outcomes through their essays and/or presentations. Similarly, students will received feedback after each assignment has been marked. Students will be encouraged to reflect on, and respond to, their feedback, with the intention of identifying their academic strengths and addressing those areas requiring further development. In all cases, students will benefit from the directed study of primary and secondary source materials prior to the assessment due dates. Modules in which there are two modes of assessment will be organised to ensure that the first assessment will be completed during the course of the module, and summative feedback given before the second assignment is due. Tutors and dissertation supervisors will be available for consultation on all assignments. This formative strategy addresses the requirements in Edge Hill's Postgraduate Taught Framework Handbook for postgraduate programmes to ensure 'Appropriate support and challenge for postgraduate (Level 7) study'. Equally, it consolidates 'self-directed learning skills achieved at undergraduate level'; develops - through consultation, feedback and review - 'postgraduate level skills of academic research and writing'; and ensures students have a 'Sound understanding of academic practice including rules on the attribution of sources'. The centrality of the dissertation supervisor in the student's learning and research experience, and the concomitant supervisor-supervisee relationship, is considered to be of major importance in addressing the academic and supportive needs faced by postgraduate students, particularly those returning to study after an extended period of engagement in other contexts.
