Vehicle by Vehicle Death Rate Comparisons;Volvo 240 and Saab 9000 Rate Best Among 178

Computing driver death rates lor cars, pickups, utility vehicles, and passenger vansduring a live-year period, Institute researchers found the Geo Tracker has the highestdeath rate - 3,2 deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles.

In contrast are the cars with low rates. Only 0.1 driver deaths per 10,000 registered vehi·c1es occurred in 1990-93 model Volvo 2405 during calendar years 1990-94. The rate was al­most as low in 1989-93 Saab 90005 with 0.2 deaths per 10,000.

Oct. 8. 1994.) This year, the Corvette hasthe next·worst rate among aI passenger ve­hicles the Institute studied - 3.0 deathsper 10.IlOO.

Driver death rates for both the Tracker.a small utility vehicle, and Corvette arenearly three times the average 01 1.1 per10,000 registered vehicles.

The 10 best passenger vehicles havedeath rates about one-third of the averageor lower. The 10 worst have rates that arealmost - or in most cases, more than ­twice as high as average (Sl.'e lists. facingpage). Atotal of 178 popular passenger ve­hicles are included in the study.

Bigger Is Better: Among the 10 passen­ger vehicles with the highest driver deathrates, 9are small and 1is midsize. None islarge Five of the 10 are small two-doorcars, 2 are small utility vehicles, 2 aresports cars, and I is a small pickup truck.

All 10 vehicles with the lowest driverdeath rates are either large or midsize.lone is small. Two are passenger vans, Iis a station wagon, I a utility vehicle, andthe other 6vehicles with the lowest ratesare large or midsize sedans.

All but I of the 10 best passenger vehi­cles are equipped with air bags at least onthe driver side. Only the Volkswagen Pas­sat doesn't have this feature. In contrast,all but 2of the worst vehicles have safetybelts only - no air bag.

Deaths in Single·Vehicle Rollovers:The Geo Tracker and Chevrolet Corvettehave not only the highest overall deathrates but also the highest rates of driverdeath in single-vehicle crashes. Along withthe Isuzu Amigo - a small utility vehiclewith the third highest overall rate amongthe 178 passenger vehicles - these are

the only ones with single-vehicle deathrates higher than 2.0 per IO.IXMJ registeredvehicles. The average single-vehicle ratefor all passenger vehicles in the Institute'sstudy is 0.5 per 10.000.

Many of these single-vehicle crashesinvolve rolling over. The Tracker's driverdeath rale in rollover crashes is morethan six times the average for all cars ­20 per 10,000 registered vehicles com·pared with an average of 0.3.

Differences Among Similar Vehicles:Death rates are influenced by driver char·acteristics as well as vehicle design. Com­parisons among passenger vehicles ofsimilar size and body style are the mostuseful because their driver characteris­tics are more likely to be similar. Yet widedifferences still distinguish vehicles with­in the same size and body style group.For example:.. Among small tw<HIoor cars, three

have rales more than three times the low­est rate for a car in this group - the Toy­ota Celica's (see tables, pp.&8). The threewith high rates are the Hyundai Scoupe,Ford Festiva, and Pontiac Lemans... Among midsize tw<HIoor cars. the

Ford Probe has a driver death rate morethan twice as high as the rate for the carin this group with the lowest rate, theChrysler LeBaron... Among small four-door cars, the

Ford Escort has a rate that's twice as highas the rate for the car in this group withthe lowest rate, the Plymouth Sundance.

.... Among midsize four-door cars, sixhave driver death rates more than 10times as high as the rale lor the car in thisgroup with the lowest rate, the Volvo 240.The six "'ith high rates are the Buick Sky·

lark, Chevrolet Cavalier, Chrysler LeBaron,Mercury Topaz, and Pontiac Grand Amand Sunbird... Among small sports cars, the

Aboul tbe Study: For each passengervehicle, Institute researchers computed adriver death rate using data from the fed­eral government's Fatal Accident Report­ing System and registration counts fromRL. Polk. Atotal of 178 series of cars, pick­up trucks, utility vehicles, and passengervans (often called minivans) are included.

All are 1989-93 model year vehicleswith at least 100,000 registered vehicleyears or 20 driver deaths during calendaryears 1990-94.

Computed death rates are more pre­cise for vehicles with larger numbers 01registrations than for those with lewerregistrations. To indicate the precision ofthe computed rates, researchers also cal­culated 95 percent confidence intervalslor each vehicle series, represented bycolor bars (see chart, pp.4-5).

Rates are presented in the tables (seepp.6-8) two ways. The first is the actualdriver death rate per 10,000 registrations,and the one next to it in parenthesis is thesame rate presented in relative termscompared with the average for alll)aSSen­ger vehicles. This average (1.1 per 10.000)is represented by 100, so the Tracker's re~

alive driver death rate of 298 is nearlythree times the average. The Volvo's rela­tive rate of 10 is one-tenth the average.

Five model years were studied. butevery year isn't included for every series.[f a vehicle was substantially changed, on­ly the most recent design is included.

To indicate the precision 01 the rale, researchers computed a 95 percent confidence inlerval repre­

sented by the color bar.

Driver death rates are presented in terms of deaths per 10,000 registered vehicle years (1 vehicle

registered for 5 years = 5 vehicle years). Rates are presented in relative lerms. That is, each vehi­

cle's actual driver death rate is indexed to the average rate for all vehicles (100 = average = 1.1deaths per 10,000)_

The first panel of death rates by vehicle make/series (shown above) includes vehicles that are sub­

stantially unchanged since the 1993 moo'el year, so consumers can use this information when shop­

ping for 1996 moo'els 01 lhese 37 vehicles. New models may be equipped with passenger air bags­

a substantial change but one that wouldn't affect driver death rates. All cars in thiS group are equipped

with air bags at least for drivers plus lap/shoulder safety belts, while all pickup trucks have bells only.

The second panel 01 death fates (shown right) includes 141 vehicles thaI have been diSCOfltinued or

SUbstantially redesigned since the 1993 model year. Consumers can use this information when shop­ping for used cars_
