Awesome October The intensely colored leaves, pinecones, pumpkins, gourds, candy corn, and Halloween themes are sure signs of the season’s transitioning, encouraging us all to prepare for change.
Change includes replacing the batteries in smoke detectors, changing filters in our heating units, checking and changing frayed electrical cords to space heaters and winterizing our cars. These changes are certainly necessary but there is so much more to October.
October has 31 days, assuring us all the opportunity to stay engaged and active. Your senior center continues to research and collaborate as staff and with various agencies to bring you activities that will elevate your mind, body and soul.
We implore you not to go into your cocoon of hibernation but to remain actively involved and stay on track to a better you. We hope you embrace the change and as always…
Keep Moving – Sean

Carolyn’s Corner Book Club The Book Club is currently reading and will meet and discuss Sing Unburied Sing by Jesmyn West on October 4 & 18. The book club meets on the first and third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. and is open to all. (Note upcoming changes below.)
The November reading, being announced here, will be Love and Other Consolation Prizes, by Jamie Ford and will be discussed in its entirety on November 1 only.
From Jamie Ford, bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, comes a powerful novel, inspired by a true story, Love and Other Consolation Prizes.
For 12-year-old Ernest Young, a charity student at a boarding school, the chance to go to the World’s Fair feels like a gift. But only once he’s there, amid the exotic exhibits, fireworks and Ferris wheels, does he discover the he is the one who is actually the prize. The half-Chinese orphan is astounded to learn he will be raffled off – a healthy boy “to a good home.”
The winning ticket belongs to the flamboyant madam of a high-class brothel, famous for educating her girls. There, Ernest becomes the new houseboy and befriends Maisie, the madam’s precocious daughter, and a bold scullery main named Fahn. Their friendship and affection form the first really family Ernst has even knows – and against all odds, this new life gives him the sense of home he’s always desired.
But as the grande dame succumbs to an occupational hazard and their world of finery begins to crumble, all three must grapple with hope, ambition and first love.
Fifty years later, in the shadow of Seattle’s second World’s Fair, Ernest struggles to help his ailing wife reconcile who she once was with who she wanted to be, while trying to keep family secrets hidden from their grown-up daughters.
Against a rich backdrop of post-Victorian vice, suffrage, and celebration, Love and Other Consolation Prizes is an enchanting tale about innocence and devotion – in a world where everything, and everyone, is for sale.
