STAYING CLOSE IS WHAT MATTERS MOST.
FAMILIES HEAL BETTER WHEN THEY’RE TOGETHER.The worst thing that can happen to a parent is to learn that their child is sick and needs to be hospitalized. Suddenly, their life stops overnight and they enter into a world of worry and fear.
For the 70% of Canadians who don’t live in a city with a children’s hospital, there’s an added stress: distance. Families often have to travel hundreds of kilometres for treatment and support, and are faced with financial demands, job insecurity, and a healing journey that can take months…or even years. This is where Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms help.
505 F A M I L I E S S T A Y at a Ronald McDonald House® or Ronald McDonald Family Room® each and every night.
Our goal is to keep families of sick children close; close to each other and close to the care they need. This means creating a caring and supportive environment for the siblings of sick children, as they too are oftentimes left alone to feel the worry and confusion of a disrupted family.
This Annual Review is dedicated to the Ronald McDonald House families, who are one of the reasons why we do what we do, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
WHEN A C H I L D becomes sick, the whole family is hurting.
RMHC: CHAMPIONS OF FAMILY
CENTRED CARE.
Ronald McDonald Houses provide a caring and supportive environment for the families of seriously ill children undergoing treatment.
Ronald McDonald Family Rooms provide a place for families to rest and recharge, right inside the hospital.
Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles are mobile health units bringing medical care to underserved communities in Alberta.
The RMHC network of programs in Canada help 30,000 families stay close to their sick child and the care they need through:
OVER 30,000 FAMILIES FROM OVER 1,800 COMMUNITIES

FAMILY STORIES.Read the heartwarming stories of families who have stayed with us when being together mattered the most.
Amanda and Mike Moody were overwhelmed with joy when they became proud new parents to their first baby boy, Jack, on March 28, 2015.
At home in Goderich, Ontario, the couple was settling into parenthood nicely, but they began to see signs that Jack wasn’t developing normally. When Jack
was 7 months, the Moodys took him to the hospital to confirm that nothing was seriously wrong. Unfortunately, Jack was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The Moody family didn’t
expect they would have to stay in London and barely brought enough with them to stay for one night, let alone the 34 nights they would end up needing to stay close.
The Moodys were in a scarier situation than they could have ever imagined, but stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in London, where they could be close to Jack.
“Everything here is so special to us. All the little things you don’t know you will need to get through it, this place provides,” said Jack’s father, Mike.
After undergoing surgery to remove the tumour, it was a relief to learn the tumour was benign and Jack could return home after recovering from the surgery.
Today, Jack continues to progress with physio and speech therapy. “In a way he made it easier for us by staying so happy,” said Mike. While the road ahead
is uncertain, Amanda and Mike know they have the Ronald McDonald House to keep them close, and the support of new friends they have made along the way to
remind them they are not alone.
“EVERYTHING HERE IS SO SPECIAL TO US. ALL THE LITTLE THINGS YOU DON’T KNOW YOU WILL NEED TO GET
THROUGH IT, THIS PLACE PROVIDES.”

When Karsten, now age four, was diagnosed with a Wilm’s tumour on his kidney, he faced months of treatment in Vancouver, away from his home in Fort St. John. More than anything, he wanted his brother and sister to be with him. Staying at
the Ronald McDonald House in Vancouver meant that Karsten and his siblings were able to be together every step of the way.
“Staying at Ronald McDonald House keeps the kids happy because there is so much to do. We’re not bored, dwelling on being sick, and the kids spend their time
playingtogether,” said Karsten’s mother, Alicia about their stays at the House.
Karsten underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy to fight his cancer, but happily he has been able to return home and start kindergarten.
He returns to Vancouver every 2-3 months for tests and checkups.
“WE’RE NOT BORED, DWELLING ON BEING SICK, AND THE KIDS SPEND
THEIR TIME PLAYING TOGETHER.”
SHORT FAMILY RMHC NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR
SARAH (MOM), MIKE (DAD) AND ISLA.HOMETOWN: DEER LAKE, NEWFOUNDLAND
LENGTH OF STAY: 45 NIGHTS
In the months leading up to their 18-month old daughter, Isla’s diagnosis, Mike and Sarah Short noticed Isla’s stomach had become enlarged and swollen.
They left their home in Deer Lake, with just a small bag of personal items to travel to St. John’s for more blood work and testing. They patiently waited for good news to ease their worried minds, but instead, their daughter Isla was diagnosed with
Neuroblastoma, a rare type of childhood cancer.
The Short family was now faced with a challenging road ahead, filled with hospital stays, treatments and chemotherapy. They weren’t prepared for this. They worried about
numerous things, even the simple things, like where they would stay. That’s when a social worker told them a room was available at the Ronald McDonald House in St. John’s.
“I had heard about Ronald McDonald House but I didn’t really know how important it was to families. We often put our loose change in coin boxes, not knowing that one day
ours would be one of the many families needing this home-away-from-home,” said Isla’s mother, Sarah Short.
While Isla’s journey is far from over, Sarah and Michael have found strength at Ronald McDonald House. “I don’t know what our family would have done
if Ronald McDonald House wasn’t there. Thank you, for keeping us close to Isla when she needs us the most,” said Isla’s father, Michael Short.
“WE OFTEN PUT OUR LOOSE CHANGE IN COIN BOXES, NOT KNOWING THAT ONE DAY
OURS WOULD BE ONE OF THE MANY FAMILIES NEEDING THIS HOME-AWAY-FROM-HOME.”
