2 Introduction A steam condenser is a heat exchanger that converts steam from its gaseous state into liquid form by operating at a pressure lower than that of the surrounding atmosphere. In basic terms, steam condensers convert steam back to water. Steam condensers are used in various industries, with key sectors including:

Chemical processing

In the power sector, steam is used to generate electricity. Oil, coal, gas, nuclear, biomass, and solar thermal power generation methods all use steam to create energy. A steam turbine is used for generating mechanical power in a rotary motion, and is powered by the extraction of thermal energy from pressurized steam, which is produced from water or other liquids. Steam power plants across the globe operate on the standard known as the Rankine Cycle. This cycle consists of four main components: boiler, turbine, steam condenser, and pump.

In a simple steam turbine based power plant, water enters a pump, where it is compressed at high pressure – step one in figure three – and then this compressed water passes through the boiler, as can be seen in step two. In the boiler, water is heated by burning fuel, and is converted into steam. This superheated, highly pressurized steam then enters the steam turbine, where it expands to rotate the turbine shaft, thereby generating electricity (step three). Steam from the turbine then enters the steam condenser, where it is condensed back into water (step four). This saturated water then enters the pump to restart the cycle. Steam condensers are also used in Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) and Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plants that use steam turbines, to reuse the water in the cycle.

11.1 Definitions This report covers the steam condenser market and looks at revenues, pricing analysis, volume sales and market share with respect to different key countries as well as globally. Market revenues provided represent the total value of order intake by all steam condenser companies in that year.

11.1.1 Power According to "Energy Information Administration" power is defined as the rate of producing, transferring, or using energy, most commonly associated with electricity. Power is measured in watts and often expressed in kilowatts (kW) or megawatts (MW).

11.1.2 Installed Capacity Installed capacity refers to the generator’s nameplate capacity as stated by the manufacturer or the maximum rated output of a generator under given conditions. Installed capacity is given in Megawatts (MW) on a nameplate physically displayed on the generator.

11.1.3 Electricity Generation Production of electric energy through the transformation of other forms of energy. Also refers to the amount of electric energy produced, expressed in Gigawatt hours (GWh).

11.1.4 Electricity Consumption Electricity consumption is the sum of electricity generated, plus imports, minus exports, minus transmission and distribution losses, and is measured in Gigawatt-hours (GWh).

11.1.5 Renewable Energy Resources Naturally replenishing energy resources limited in the amount of energy that is available per unit of time. For example, biomass, geothermal, solar, and wind can all be termed as renewable resources.

11.1.6 Thermal Power Plant A plant in which turbine generators are driven by burning fossil fuels.

11.1.7 Hydropower Plant A plant in which the turbine generators are driven by falling water.

11.1.8 Nuclear Power The electricity generated from the use of the thermal energy released from the fission of nuclear fuel in a reactor.
