  • The new shape in steam traps. . .Bestobell’s Delta Element

    Benefits of the Delta Design

n Long Service Life — single blade elementis not prone to problems with dirt buildupas encountered in stacked bimetallicdesigns.

n Stainless Steel Internals — for long lifeand corrosion resistance.

n Modulating Discharge — automaticallyadjusts to operating pressure and load, overcoming problems associated withcyclic discharge.

n Fast Start-Up — due to high colddischarge capacities.

n Continuous Air and Co2 Venting — maxi-

    mizes heat transfer, minimizes plantcorrosion.

n No Loss of Live Steam — for greaterenergy efficiency and long seat life. War-ranted up to three years against the lossof live steam in operation.

A sophisticated, yet simple, design that willprovide years of trouble-free service with no steamloss.

Bestobell Steam’s delta element is a triangularshaped bimetal strip of austenitic and ferritic stain-less steels. The materials are rolled together, shaped into the delta pattern and then heat-treatedto eliminate stresses.

The single blade design provides faster responsethan found with typical stacked arrangements dueto the large surface/mass ratio. The stem issituated at a point that allows the expansion of thebimetal to exert a linear pull on the stem toprevent uneven wear on the sealing surfaces.

    Thermostatic andThermodynamic Forces

Bestobell traps are unique in that they employ ahybrid design that utilizes both thermostatic andthermodynamic principles to achieve a continuousmodulating discharge of condensate as it forms, and eliminates live steam loss.

The combination of a temperature-sensitive clos-ing force (thermostatic element) and a pressure-sensitive opening force (thermodynamic valve)overcomes the sluggishness and susceptibility toservice failure than can be encountered withtraditional bimetallic designs. The valve designutilizes the thermodynamic pressure forces of theflashing steam to provide quick response and awide operating range closely approximating thesteam curve.

    Integral Strainers and Check Valves

Bestobell Steam saves you the added expenseof buying and installing separate strainers andcheck valves to complete your steam trap station. Most models include a built-in strainer to protectthe trap internals from dirt or foreign matter in yoursteam system.

The valve stem acts as an integral check valveto prevent backward flow of condensate. The DeltaElement Trap can operate in applications with backpressures of up to 70% of inlet pressures due tothe adjustable design of the element.

Steam trap operation . . . dual forces foroptimal performance

Following the steam curve is the key to efficientsteam trap performance. Utilizing dual thermostatic/thermodynamic forces allows Bestobell Steam deltatraps to match the steam curve. This means thatthe energy in the steam is efficiently used by yourprocess, and not wasted in the operation of thesteam trap.

    Initial System Start-Up

On initial start-up of the steam system, largeamounts of cold condensate and air are present inthe system. At this point, the bimetallic strip of thedelta element relaxes and fully opens the valve as-sembly to quickly expel the high volume of non-con-densable gases and cold condensate through thedischarge port.

    Thermostatic Forces for Tight Shutoff

As the element senses an increase in the con-densate temperature, the bimetal expands andraises the stem to modulate flow. Just below thetemperature of saturated steam, the seat will closetightly to prevent live steam from discharging.

Conversely, lower temperature condensate re-laxes the bimetal, allowing the valve to open. Withthis valve opening, the system differential pressureacts on the diameter of the plug, which increasesthe force of the opening to allow faster and heaviercondensate discharge capacity.

    Thermodynamic Forces

As high pressure condensate is discharged to alower pressure variable (either atmospheric or a pres-surized condensate return system), thermodynamicforces develop. These forces are introduced via athree stage orifice that contains an expansion cham-ber that is formed between the seat and skirt of thevalve stem. The controlled pressure drop throughthe second stage orifice into the expansion cham-ber, and the resulting intermediate pressure, cre-ates an opening force that increases hot dischargecapacity. It also results in only a small percentageof the total pressure drop occurring at the valve seat, which significantly reduces wear.

Controlling Flash Steam ProvidesHigher Discharge Capacities

As the temperature of the condensate in-creases, the element assembly acts to modu-late the flow. As hot condensate is discharged,a portion of it flashes back to steam, and at-tempts to occupy a space much larger than itwould as condensate.

The controlled generation of flash steamwithin the expansion chamber enhancesthe pressure forces acting on the diameter ofthe plug to increase hot discharge capacity.

    No Live Steam Loss

As the temperature of the condensate nearsthe steam curve, the delta element expandsmoving the stem closer to the seat and flash-ing occurs in the upper portion of the dischargeorifice. This momentarily chokes the flow andresults in an instantaneous drop off of pres-sure acting on the plug, causing the plug to bepulled tightly against the seat.

Under extremely low loads, the trap willremain closed until the pressure opening forceof the condensate overcomes the temperatureclosing force of the bimetal. A small seal ofcondensate is always maintained over thevalve orifice to prevent the loss of live steam, because live steam cannot pass through water.

Under normal operating conditions, the trapmodulates to follow process conditions anddischarge condensate as it is formed. Thisprovides smoother operation than with cyclicdischarge traps, thus reducing unnecessarystresses and contributing to long service life.

  • Vacuum Breakers

The VB70 Series is a general purpose vacuum breaker for useon steam and liquid services with pressures up to 232 psi (15,99bar). The use of the VB70 allows air to enter the steam or liquidpipeline to relieve vacuums which would inhibit flow or drainageand decrease system performance and efficiency.

    SteamTector

An ultrasonic leak detection device used to check and locatefailures of steam traps, valves and other steam equipment. Thisdevice quickly detects steam leakage as well as leaks in air andgas systems. The ultrasonic test procedures are “the” most reli-able means of checking steam traps.
