Red is the color of Pentecost, and it signifies the tongues of flames seen over the heads of those praying together. The Scripture also tells us that the sound of the blowing of a violent wind filled the house where they were praying. In addition to the color red, churches often display tongues of flame and symbols of the wind on banners and posters. In Scripture, we read that the believers were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to go into the streets telling of Jesus to all those they met. Following Peter's sermon, many were bap- tized; and the church began to grow. Because of this, we call Pentecost, "the birthday of the church." In our families, we may have elaborate celebrations of Christmas and Easter, but fail to celebrate Pentecost. However, without Pente- cost, we would not have the church. It is worth- while to spend time in family devotions and cele- brations for this church holy day that helps us remember how the church began. What can you do in your family to cele- brate Pentecost? Read together Acts 2:1-40. Ask each fam- ily member to tell of one thing he or she will try to remember from the Scripture reading. Make a Pentecost cake to celebrate the birth of the church. Tint icing red and decorate. Place candles in clusters to symbolize the flames. Enjoy wind activities together. Make and fly a kite. Sit outside at dusk and feel the wind on your faces. Visit an older member of our church. Ask your church friend to tell you about memories of how our church started, of memories of Sunday school, and of memories of people who were im- portant to his or her faith formation. Pentecost began on Sunday May 23rd.

Pentecost was a Jewish festival that took place not long after the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus has been raised. The disciples have seen him, resur-rected and returned to them.

Yet, now he has ascended and what about them? He told them to wait in Jerusalem until he would send them his Spirit to be with them. They waited. They waited and worried about what their future might hold. Many of them felt fear, doubt and despair. Then on Pentecost, there was a rush of mighty wind, tongues of fire - and the Holy Spirit prevailed. The church was born. The once disheartened disciples moved out, prodded, and enabled by the Holy Spirit who gave what the human spirit could not. For Christians, Pentecost occurs fifty days after Easter. On that day, the church celebrates the happenings recorded in the New Testament Book of Acts, chapter 2. Notice when you come into church, the changes of the colors in the sanctuary.

Following Peter's sermon, many were bap-tized; and the church began to grow. Because of this, we call Pentecost, "the birthday of the church."

From The Pastor’s Study

My beloved Parishioners,

What a Mighty God we serve! Each time I

think about the goodness of God and all that He

has for us, my heart shouts hallelujah, praise

God!

On July 1st, we will begin our sixth year as

your pastoral family. Where has the time gone?

We are grateful to you for allowing us this won-

derful opportunity to be in ministry with you. We

have celebrated, laughed, wept, agreed and dis-

agreed together. We have ministered to each

other and we have grown together. We have suc-

ceeded and failed together, yet through it all, we

have experienced the love of God Almighty.

This year we were blessed to have mem-

bers of our congregation gather in individual

homes for our Lenten Bible Study. We had an

average attendance of 78 persons in 10 homes.

It has been a true blessing to listen to the reports

from the various groups. Many of you have re-

quested that this be continued. We are currently

working on the lesson plan for the next six weeks

of study.

This year, the Christian Education Team

has decided to do our Vacation Bible School in

the evening. We have an exciting time plan for

our children and adults. We want to encourage

and invite all persons in leadership position in the

church to be in attendance at our VBS. Please

come out and support this wonderful ministry

from July 19th -23

rd. A home cooked meal will be

served each evening, so forget

about cooking at home and come and break

bread with us. Please call the church office and

register your attendance.

We are pleased to report that the Centen-

nial plaque bearing the names of individuals who

donated $100 for the Centennial Anniversary will

be unveiled on July 4th during the worship ser-

vice. The Centennial Books that you purchased

are currently at the printer. It is our hope and

prayers that it will also be ready by July 4th.

We regret to inform you that the church’s

pictorial directory that was to be produced by

Olan Mills will not be forthcoming. The company

discarded the pictures after two years. We take

full responsibility for the neglect of not completing

the project. We were overwhelmed with our

move to the new facility and that project fell on

the back burner. We hope to commence a new

church pictorial directory project in the near fu-

ture.

We have not been successful in selling or

renting the property at 2013 Lawrence. It is the

desire of the Church Council to aggressively pro-

ceed in getting rid of the property before the end

of summer this year. We are currently looking at

three options: Sell/lease, Auction or return it to

the conference. Currently, our yearly expense for

keeping the property is $5,000.

In conclusion, we would like to thank all of

you who continuously support this ministry with

your prayers, attendance and finances. May God

continue to bless each of you for the sacrifices

you make to enhance His Kingdom.

Finally, we thank all of you who sur-

rounded us with your prayers, love, cards, trans-

portation and food after our auto accident. We

cannot thank you enough for your graciousness

and kindness.

Love you, Pastor Dixon

Welcome Summer

June 20th!

God, creator of the seasons has

allowed a phenomenon for each season.

The earth is full of riches. The beauty is

intense, the creatures are satisfied. I ob-

serve each season with awe. God in his

grace and mercy allows me to behold his

manifold works of wisdom.

We are in the season of Pentecost.

We celebrate Pentecost on the 50th day

after Easter which commemorates the

coming of the Holy Spirit up on the apos-

tles in Jerusalem.

We celebrate Pentecost to cele-

brate a hope and knowledge that God

through his holy spirit is at work among

his people. It is a celebration of newness,

recreation, recreational renewal of pur-

pose, mission, and calling of God’s peo-

ple.

It is also a recognition that His

work is done through His people as he

pours out His presence among them.

Remember our sick and shut in your daily prayers. A kind

card or a simple note could brighten a person’s day; take a

moment and let our member know that they are in the Braden

Family prayers

ODESSA M. PHILLIPS

103 Birthday Celebration On Saturday, May 29th at 2:00 p.m., Pastor Dixon

and some members of Braden joined Mother Phil-

lips and her family at her residence to celebrate her

103rd birthday. The pastor presented her a large

print Bible with her name engraved on it and a

dozen pink roses from the Braden church family.

Pink is her favorite color. Her actual birthday was

May 31st.

ODESSA MARIAH PHILLIPS WAS THE 2nd CHILD BORN TO JOHN BOLIVER AND MARY BER-

THA BROWN LUCAS. SHE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND FIVE SISTERS WHO WERE ALL BORN

IN ABBEVILLE MISSISSIPPI. ODESSA AND ALL OF HER SIBLINGS GREW UP AND LIVED IN

THE SAME HOUSE UNTIL EACH ONE MARRIED AND LEFT HOME. HER FATHER WAS ONE

OF THE FEW BLACK MEN WHO WAS OWNED THEIR OWN HOME IN MISSISSIPPI.

ODESSA MOVED TO TOLEDO IN 1936 TO HELP HER SISTER, TEXANNA AND HER HUSBAND,

WILLIAM TAKE CARE OF THEIR OLDEST TWO CHILDREN . AT THAT TIME SHE UNITED

WITH BRADEN METHODIST CHURCH UNDER THE PASTORAL LEADERSHIP OF THE REVER-

END CLARENCE T R NELSON.

HERE IN TOLEDO, SHE MET THE LOVE OF HER LIFE, JAMES PHILLIPS AND THEY WERE

MARRIED IN 1937 BY REV. CLARENCE T. R. NELSON IN THE PARSONAGE OF THE CHURCH

THEN LOCATED ON CITY PARK AND BELMONT AVENUES.

SHE BECAME VERY INVOLVED IN THE CHURCH, SINGING IN THE CHOIR, BEING ONE OF

THE FIRST USHERS THAT USHERED IN UNIFORM WHICH CONSISTED OF A BLACK SKIRT,

WHITE BLOUSE WITH BLACK BOW, AND BLACK SHOES.

AT BRADEN SHE SERVED AS VICE PRESIDENT OF THE COMMUNION STEWARDS AND

LATER AS PRESIDENT OF THE COMMUNION STEWARDS FOR MANY YEARS. AFTER SERV-

ING AS PRESIDENT SHE THEN BECAME SUPERVISOR OF THE ACOLYTES . ODESSA

SERVED ON THE COMMUNION STEWARD BOARD FOR MANY YEARS UNTIL HER HEALTH

BEGAN TO FAIL.

Page 9: steeple20-20june20-2020101

The Braden Steeple June 2010, Issue Page 9

ODESSA WAS ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF THE FIRST GOSPEL CHOIR OF

BRADEN . SHE WAS ALSO ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF THE PASTORAL CARE

COMMITTEE ORGANIZED TO ASSIST THE PASTOR AND HIS FAMILY.

ALTHOUGH ODESSA NEVER HAD ANY CHILDREN OF HER OWN SHE WAS THE FAVORITE

AUNT (MOTHER) TO MANY OF HER NIECES AND NEPHEWS.

AT THE AGE OF 103 ODESSA STILL IS ABLE TO REMEMBER ALL OF HER NIECES AND NEPH-

EWS AND STILL HANDLES MOST OF HER BUSINESS AFFAIRS AND STILL LOVES TO SHOP

WHENEVER SHE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY.

SHE NOW HAS ONE BROTHER (BOBBY) LIVING IN TOLEDO AND ONE SISTER (NINA) LIVING

IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.

ODESSA HAS ALWAYS BEEN A ONE TO SPEAK VERY OPENLY, NEVER BEING AFRAID TO SAY

WHAT WAS ON HER MIND. SHE LOVED WORKING IN HER CHURCH. ALTHOUGH NEVER

WANTING TO BE IN THE SPOT LIGHT SHE WORKED FAITHFULLY BEHIND THE SCENES TO

BE SURE THAT GOD’S WORK WAS DONE.

HER FAVORITE SCRIPTURE IS PSALM 103:1,2 AND HER FAVORITE HYMN IS

“I WANT JESUS TO WALK WITH ME”.

SHE IS LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING HER FAMILY AGAIN AND WALKING ALL OVER GOD’S

HEAVEN.

The Braden Steeple June 2010, Issue Page 12

The words for this issue are:

Days after Pentecost

and Trinity Sunday

What do these words mean?

Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday after

Pentecost. It is a transitional Sunday. It takes us

from the Season of Lent/Easter/Pentecost into a

season called Ordinary Time (Another term for

this time is Kingdom tide.) Trinity Sunday gives

us the opportunity to celebrate the Holy Spirit.

The concept of the Holy Trinity is diffi-

cult to understand and is mysterious even to the

most learned biblical scholar. The Trinity is core

to Christian belief.

Complete understanding of the Trinity is

not imperative to believing in it. We often be-

lieve in things that most of us don’t understand

completely—air waves bouncing sound out to a

satellite in space which then bounces it back

somewhere else, the GNP (Gross National Prod-

uct), and a mother’s love for her child.

Few take the time to scientifically explain

a mother’s love for her child, but we all under-

stand it on some level. The understanding differs

depending upon our relationship with our moth-

ers. The same is true with our relationship with

the Trinity; our understanding often depends

upon our own individual spiritual journey.

The Trinity is the Christian way of ex-

plaining the three ways we see God acting in the

world; the Father, the creator; the Son, God come

down to us in our human, everyday lives; the

Holy Spirit, the spiritual element of the Trinity.

Trinity Sunday is the day that we cele-

brate this Great Mystery.

Symbols of the Trinity are very important in

Christianity. Some of the symbols for the Trinity

are:

What is the SPRC? SPRC is the abbreviation for Staff-Parish Relations

Committee. Also known as the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, or PPRC.

The Staff Parish Relations Committee is the ad-

ministrative unit in the church whose purpose is to bring the staff and congregational interests together in support of the focus and mission of the church.

The church staff includes both bishop-appointed

staff as well as employed staff. The SPRC works with staff from both of these classifications. Members of the committee serve a three-year term, with generally three members rotating off each year. Specific tasks and responsibilities of the SPRC are covered in paragraph 258.2 of the Book of Discipline.

Each year, committee members are assigned to be a liaison/advocate for one or more church staff members. Below are the names and phone numbers of this year’s committee and the staff member(s) they represent:

Worship this summer at Braden

June 13 - August 15

'Biblical Blockbuster'

Joseph Worship Series

The Old Testament story of Joseph has everything it takes to

become a summer movie blockbuster. Adolescent idealism, Sib-

ling jealousy, Sexual temptation, Bitter defeat, Unexpected op-

portunity, Undeserved forgiveness. It is also the story of the

often unseen ways in which God continues to be faithful to his

dream for Joseph's life when everything is stacked against it.

As we follow Joseph through the unexpected detours of his life,

we are invited to ask the hard questions about our own lives.

Where is God when we can't see or feel his presence? Can we

trust God’s purpose to be fulfilled when everything seems to be

working against it? Will God be faithful to us in the darkest and

most difficult circumstances we face? Walking with Joseph, we

may discover what it will mean for us to live with confidence in

the faithfulness of God, even in the hardest of times.

Two missed sessions are the maximum allowed. All interested youth and their parents must sign up on the Youth Bulletin Board to confirm their attendance. Thank you to all of the participants, parents, volunteers, speakers and donors for a fun and informative Lock-In.
