The Rolls-Royce series of rotary vane steering gears has been manufactured for more than 60 years, with more than 30 000 machines delivered. The principle of a rotary vane gives more flexibility when choosing the design and types of rudder, thanks to the rudder angles of up to 2 x 70º.

The rotary vane principle also ensures a constant torque throughout the steering sequence, providing the gear with maximum power output at all rudder angles. This makes navigation through narrow straits or busy shipping channels safer, because maximum torque and steering time can always be achieved, resulting in improved manoeuvrability and improved control. Unique technical solutions ensure very low noise and vibration levels. The compact and simple design reduces weight and the number of components, which in turn secures fast and easy installation of the steering gear. The actuators are mounted directly on the rudder stock, without requiring the use of keys or keyways, facilitating easier assembly and dismantling of the rudder stock. The rudder torque is transmitted by hydraulic coupling or by hydraulic sleeve coupling/expansion rings (for the

smaller machines). The naval series of rotary vane steering gear is designed to meet the highest standards for noise, shock and vibration. For naval applications without Milspec requirements the SR & RV ranges offer reliability and maintainability at low cost for a wide range of applications.

The SR series of steering gearThe SR series is suitable for small to medium-sized vessels. The steering gear is designed with integrated frequency controlled pumps. The pump utilises a reversible hydraulic pump motor together with a frequency converter to reduce the power consumption and to change the speed and the direction of the pump. The design gives smooth starting and stopping of the steering gear, and enables a precise analogue control system. The pump units are mounted directly on the rudder actuator, which lessens the need for piping work on board a vessel. Full frequency control means the pumps and motors are only running when a steering command is given, this reduces the amount of heat generated and leads to a cleaner hydraulic system, improving the lifetime of components.

Steering gear

Rotary vane steering gear for larger vessels

The RV series steering gearThe Rolls-Royce RV series of steering gear has a proven service record on all types of vessels. Today’s range is suitable for medium-sized to large ships, including large container vessels and VLCCs. The weight is typically 50-60% of a RAM-type steering gear, with a much smaller space requirement. Furthermore, the design’s dual, submerged pump power packs make installation even easier, as no expansion tank is needed. Installation is also simplified because of the integrated storage tank and rudder carrier. The modulated flow control modulates the oil flow to the actuator in order to give a soft start and low rudder speed for small rudder movements. The oil flow gradually increases to full flow, allowing

full turning speed on the rudder. The system ensures a very precise rudder positioning at small rudder angles during course keeping, while the full flow ensures full manoeuvring capability when needed.

The IRV series steering gearIMO regulations require compliance with the principle of single failure criteria for large tankers over 100,000 dwt. This require-ment is met by the IRV series, which incorporates automatic isolation and separation of the actuator’s dual hydraulic system. The actuator is equipped with a double sealing system, completely separating the actuator in two individual pressure systems.

The RV and IRV series are suitable for medium-sized to large vessels.

4-vane steering gearThis is a range of extremely compact rotary vane steering gear, which is suitable for medium to large vessels including tankers over 100,000 dwt. The 4-vane steering gear is a further development of the well proven range of steering gear with two and three vanes. The key advantages of this design are its compact size because of the four vanes and its light weight as well. The 4-vane steering gear is available as the standard RV model as well as the IRV model, which satisfies all statutory requirements for tankers over 100,000 dwt. This range also incorporates the proven and unique modulated flow control valve.

Frequency-controlled solutionsReduced power consumptionFor our RV and IRV range, a system with frequency controllers for optimising speed of the electric motors enables us to take control over the power consumption of the steering gear. The design gives smooth starts and stops of the steering gear and enables a precise

steering. During idling of the pump, the frequency is reduced to a minimum. The starting current is also reduced to a minimum with this system.

Reduced emergency generator sizeThe RV and IRV range also have the possibility to have one frequency controller connected to the emergency stand-by pump, in order to reduce the power consumption and the starting current on the emergency generator. This solution will reduce the power consumption and starting current to a minimum during an emergency operation.

In-service solutionOn the larger 4-vane steering gear an integrated lifting device has been included. This device allows access to the split seals and bearings on the top and bottom covers of the actuator without the need to disconnect the rudderstock connection. This way, a full overhaul of the steering gear can be performed without having to disconnect the rudder.

Typical applications: • Corvettes• Frigates• Destroyers• Aircraft carriers

The Rolls-Royce naval type of steering gear systems with digital controls and autopilot have been selected by a large number of the world's navies including the USA, Canada, Malaysia, India, Australia and the British Royal Navy. The range has been developed to integrate seamlessly with the vast number of applications deployed in naval fleets.

Rotary vane steering gearThe compact size of the rotary vane steering gear facilitates ease of fitting to single or multiple-rudder instal lations. The standard working angle of a rotary vane unit is 37º to one side, although gears can be supplied to give maximum working angles of 70º and 90º to one side.

The 17 model range is available for torques from 20-2,510 kNM.

The rotary vane steering gear is specifically designed to conform with international naval standards for noise, shock and vibration.

Naval rotary vane steering gear

The range has been developed to suit many different types of naval vessels.

9

The actuator gear is a cost-effective and reliable solution particularly where full shock standards are not required. These gears are bespoke designed to customer requirements and offer high perfor mance at low cost.

Furthermore, use of the actuator type means fewer interface surfaces on board because the actuator's anchor brackets can be welded directly on to the hull cartridge. This means that actuator steering gear is less tolerance-critical for installation.

If problems occur with the hydraulic driving mechanism, replacing an actuator is easier than a rotary vane or a ram type of steering gear.

The hydraulic power units can be configured to meet specific customer requirements. It can also be delivered as a dual or single power units.

The 7 model range is available for torques from 50-500 kNm.

Actuator steering gear has been supplied for the Royal Navy Type 45 destroyers.

Typical applications: • Corvettes• Frigates• Destroyers

Key product benefits• Reduced fuel consumption • Reduced environmental impact

Promas integrates the propeller and the rudder into a single system to optimise hydrodynamic efficiency. A special hubcap is fitted to the propeller which streamlines the flow onto a bulb that is added to the rudder, effectively reducing flow separation immediately after the propeller. The result is an increase in propeller thrust as previously wasted energy is recovered from the flow. The addition of the bulb on the rudder also streamlines the flow aft of the rudder, further reducing drag.

A twisted rudder provides further improvements in efficiency and manoeuvrability.

Improved propulsive efficiency

In general the efficiency gain is between 3-8% for single screw vessels and 2-6% for twin screw vessels with FP or CP propellers. Virtually any vessel will benefit. The position of the rudder in the slipstream and the skeg design can deliver further improvements. Designs are extensively tested and verified in the Rolls-Royce Hydrodynamic Research Centre.

Comparison tests with conventional propeller/rudder systems are shown in the graph below.

Integrated propulsion and manoeuvring system

Promas with nozzle

Promas + nozzle For efficient high bollard pull applications

A natural evolution of the successful Promas, this system unites a new type of nozzle with an optimised propeller, hubcap, rudder bulb and a special rudder profile developed to provide very high steering forces yet minimise drag. It meets the requirements for large pulling power at low speed with a high free-running speed in transit. Components are designed to work together in a ducted system, maximising efficiency and minimising disturbances in the water flow both through and around the nozzle. Developed through CFD testing and analysis, the nozzle is a major advance on the profile used in conventional nozzle propeller installations. In a typical anchorhandler propulsion system it will reduce fuel

consumption in transit by 15% or more, and improve bollard pull by around 5%. Depending on the exact requirements the rudder may be either a one-piece design or a medium flap type.

Promas LiteImproving propulsive efficiency is the key in reducing fuel burn, and this simple modification allows vessels already in service to benefit from Promas efficiency gains. There are three areas of modification – welding a prefabricated bulb to the existing rudder, bolting a hubcap to the propeller, and fitting a new propeller or reblading the original. Installation is normally 7-10 days and the payback time can be under 2 years.

Typical applications: • Anchorhandling offshore vessels• Seismic survey• Tugs• Fishing vessels• Multipurpose platform supply vessels• Offshore construction vessels

Rudders

Classic rudders

Classic rudderThe classic rudder series, with no rudder angle limitation and optimised profile designs, provides an economical way of improving the manoeuvring capabilities of most vessels. To meet each vessels requirements, we offer tailored solutions that can be integrated as a package together with Rolls-Royce steering gear or as an integral part of the PROMAS – Propulsion manoeuvring system. Furthermore, with few moving parts it is also easy to install and maintain. This ensures your vessel will have optimal reliability, excellent manoeuvrability and low life cycle costs.

For transit speeds the directional stability of the vessel must be considered, we have developed and use advanced computer programs to simulate different manoeuvres such as the IMO criteria (zig-zag test), making it possible to evaluate different rudder sizes and types in order to optimise the rudder design for each vessel.

Type CBfor lower speedsA bulbous profile and large vane end platesimprove low speed manoeuvrability. It sharesthe same profile as the FB flap rudder andis typically used for offshore supply, cargo, fishing and seismic vessels.

Rudders

Flap rudders

Flap rudders Our flap rudder series provides both excellent low speed manoeuvring performance and high propulsive efficiency. A Flap rudder produces more sideforce than a classic rudder of equivalent size. Depending on shipowner requirements, a flap rudder may be used to reduce the overall area of a rudder whilst maintaining equal lift forces or may be used whenever there is a requirement for high manoeuvrability. Therefore a good understanding of Shipowner requirements is vital when designing a rudder.

As a supplier of both rudders and propellers, Rolls-Royce uses experience in cavitation prediction and hydrodynamics, generated from in-house model testing and in collaboration with leading European test centres, in order to optimise and document the manoeuvring performance of our rudders at low speeds. The r udders can also be optimised for higher speeds and the leading edge of the rudder can be twisted to improve the efficiency and cavitation characteristics of the rudder.

Type FBfor low to medium speedsThis rudder has a bulbous profile formaximum manoeuvring performance. Thedesign also has large upper and lower vaneplates. It is ideal for use on workboats, fishingvessels, offshore vessels, small tankers, cargovessels, ferries and other coastal vessels.

Retractable stabilisersRetractable fin stabiliser systems play an important role in improving the all-important on board experience for passengers and crew. They are supplied in pairs, but can be used singly if required. When not in use they retract into recesses in the hull, flush with the vessel’s side. Vessel speed and the angle of the fins in the water determines the degree of lift generated and the subsequent level of roll reduction. The control system senses ship speed and the degree of ship movement and alters the fin angle to provide the necessary lift to return the vessel to an even keel. Compared to an unstabilised vessel, these systems provide 80-90% roll reduction.

Neptune II retractable-fin stabilisersThe one-piece fin is built of fabricated materials, with a modified NACA (North American Committee on Aeronautics) section to maximise lift properties and minimise drag, with a similar effect as flapped fins.Features include an innovative tilt ram attribute, which facilitates cylinder and seal maintenance without dry- docking, simplified crux assembly, improved hydraulic and lubrication systems, lower weight and a new fin extension-locking mechanism for improved safety. Neptune II offers optimal vessel performance with low ownership costs.

The Gemini range of stabilisers are suited to commercial vessels and military vessels with minimal or no military/naval specifications.

Technical data, Gemini folding-fin stabilisers*

Gemini non-retractable stabilisersFor applications where retraction of the fins is not required, the Gemini range is available for smaller vessels where high performance and low cost are important factors. The Gemini range of non-retractable stabilisers are supplied with a plain, high performance fabricated fin. Gemini stabilisers provide high performance roll damping with a compact, lightweight design and modern controls, as well as proving highly dependable with low mainte nance costs. The power unit is compact, incorpo-rating pumps, motor, proportional control valves and cooler, and the range can be supplied with or without a hull plate to allow a balance of cost against ease of installation.

The modular type of stabilisers meet military standards for noise, shock and vibration levels.

Modular stabilisersThe modular stabiliser range incorporates superior hydro dynamic features, and is designed to satisfy standards for noise, shock and vibration where these are required to meet customer military/naval specifications. A keyless taper socket fin attachment allows the hydro dynamic profile of the fin blade to remain unbroken, reducing the potential for cavitation. If required, air emission from the leading edge of the fin can also be utilised to minimise noise induced by cavitation. The hull-closing plate is an integral part of the fin unit. Installation is easy, as the unit is shaped to fit the hull lines exactly, so e xpensive seating structures and finishing work can be avoided.

Our support teams, located worldwide, are committed to helping youmanage the vital balance between operational availability and cost. Wherever your vessel is located, Rolls-Royce support is close at hand.

Operational availability must be maintained today in the most cost-effective way. Variable market conditions and increasing competition should not undermine safe ship operations. Therefore, we work closely with our customers to support their fleets, ensuring that they are operating safely and at maximum efficiency, with the goal of virtually eliminating unscheduled downtime.

A comprehensive menu of service solutionsWe are proud of the performance of our systems, and are keen to ensure that they continue to operate at their peak throughout their lifetime. Our services now range from conventional product support, with no impact on ship availability, through to a range of equipment and system support packages with levels of vessel performance and availability agreed, normally within a long-term risk and reward-sharing partnership called MarineCare.

Single point of contactAs we have progressively increased the breadth of our product range, we have continued investing heavily in the facilities and the talent needed to support them. As multiproduct installations are becoming standard on a growing number of vessels, customers benefit from a single point of contact for support, which is usually the nearest Rolls-Royce regional centre to the vessel’s location.

Reducing through life costsReducing operating costs and maximising availability is our objective. This has led us to work closer with a number of our customers in maintenance planning and recommending spares holding. By being involved from the start we have the opportunity to focus on the activities that make a difference, acquiring and pre-positioning service or exchange parts to ensure a smoother overhaul process, saving time spent in dock.

Committed to meeting different needsAbove all, at the centre of our support philosophy, is recognition that all customers have different and often unique requirements, based on their fleet operations. Whatever the mix of requirements, Rolls-Royce is committed to meeting or exceeding them.

Product trainingAt Rolls-Royce we believe that regular training ensures that you will get the most out of a vessel’s equipment and systems, and it also ensures that they are operated and maintained efficiently and safely. Experienced and informed people are a key asset. As technology advances, so must the competence levels of operators and service personnel. We therefore offer a range of tailored training courses and programmes in state-of-the-art facilities equipped with the latest simulators and training aids.
