To marry here, at least one party to the marriage should be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass for one year before asking to schedule a wedding. As Catholics, we believe that God has a plan for marriage. Cohabitation before marriage is not part of God’s plan and decreases the chances of success in maintaining a permanent union. Cohabitating couples should separate and live apart before requesting the Sacrament of Matrimony. More information is available from the parish office regarding guidelines for weddings and parishioner status. Diocesan policy requires at least six months’ notice before setting a wedding date. SACRAMENTAL POLICY In order to receive First Holy Communion or Confirmation, students in Grades 2 and 8 must attend TWO FULL YEARS of religious instructions if they are NOT in our Catholic School system. No more than THREE (3) classes can be missed during the year of sacramental preparation. The facilities and services of Stella Maris Parish are available to its active members. This includes use of the Church for Baptisms, Weddings, and other sacramental events and includes parishioner status in our parochial schools. Active membership is determined by three things: being registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time, faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, and the use of the envelope system in support of the parish. N.B. If you are attending Stella Maris but not receiving envelopes, then you are not registered. Please call the Parish Office for registration information. PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL THE SICK IN OUR PARISH If anyone wishes to receive Communion and is unable to come to Mass, call Jason Vaughan at 843-883-3044. FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK My dear people, Happy New Year! With this First Sunday of Advent, we begin the journey through another year of grace. As I mentioned here last week, Advent is not Christmas, but a penitential season of joyful of hope preparing for Christmas. I encourage you to plan Advent in a manner analogous to Lent. Thanks to our Youth Group, we will offer devotions on the Wednesday nights of Advent similar to Lent’s Stations, Soups and Sandwiches. On Wednesday nights, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for a Eucharistic Holy Hour at 6:00 P.M. Mostly, we anticipate an hour of quiet prayer, personal spiritual reading, and reflection, a wonderful counterpoint to the traffic and crowds at the mall, a respite from the hectic pace of a culture that frenetically tries to prepare for Christmas and celebrate it at the same time. Friday of this week is First Friday, a day of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This Friday is also the Vigil of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holyday of obligation, this Saturday. As usual, we will have Nocturnal Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Thursday night. On Friday, instead of the First Friday Votive Mass of the Sacred Heart (Latin Mass), I will celebrate a Traditional Latin Mass of the Immaculate Conception at 4:00 P.M. This will be an anticipated Mass for the holyday. On Saturday morning, we will celebrate a Novus Ordo Mass of the Immaculate Conception at 10:00 A.M. The Mass on Saturday evening will be the regular anticipated Mass for the Sunday. While I try to avoid writing or talking too much about myself, I am getting questions and want to explain that my weight loss in recent months is deliberate and I feel fine. Thanks go to those who have expressed concern. Also, I have a plea about Christmas: as much as I have enjoyed them in the past, please no Christmas sweets this year for me. And while, some of you have suggested I buy some smaller collars, I know better and will hold on that for now! Usually my collars and clothes tend to shrink and recently they seem to have expanded, but I know how easily they shrink again. It must be the humidity interacting with dry heat indoors! There are many graces given in Advent; may we each get what we need to have a holy Christmas.

COMING SOON: ADVENT REFLECTIONS

The Advent season is a time of hopeful expectation, as we prepare our hearts for the coming of the Christ Child. Again this year, St. Mary of the Annunciation parishioner and biblical scholar, Betsy Cahill, will be offering daily Advent reflections by email. These brief reflections are accompanied by a prayer and a link to the day’s lectionary readings. The reflections will begin Sunday, December 2nd, and conclude on Christmas Eve. Many parishioners have enjoyed these over the last few years. To sign up, go to http://eepurl.com/cqyLz5 or betsycahill.com, and fill out the form on the website. If you have any questions, please contact Betsy at [email protected]. It is our hope that the fruits of these reflections will accompany you throughout the each day, and fill you with joyful anticipation throughout the Advent season.
