To marry here, at least one party to the marriage should be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass for one year before asking to schedule a wedding. As Catholics, we believe that God has a plan for marriage. Cohabitation before marriage is not part of God’s plan and decreases the chances of success in maintaining a permanent union. Cohabitating couples should separate and live apart before requesting the Sacrament of Matrimony. More information is available from the parish office regarding guidelines for weddings and parishioner status. Diocesan policy requires at least six months’ notice before setting a wedding date. SACRAMENTAL POLICY In order to receive First Holy Communion or Confirmation, students in Grades 2 and 8 must attend TWO FULL YEARS of religious instructions if they are NOT in our Catholic School system. No more than THREE (3) classes can be missed during the year of sacramental preparation. The facilities and services of Stella Maris Parish are available to its active members. This includes use of the Church for Baptisms, Weddings, and other sacramental events and includes parishioner status in our parochial schools. Active membership is determined by three things: being registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time, faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, and the use of the envelope system in support of the parish. N.B. If you are attending Stella Maris but not receiving envelopes, then you are not registered. Please call the Parish Office for registration information. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

My dear people,

During the week, I received E.mails from Catholic sources advertising programs for planning a good Lent. Upon reflection, I realized these were 21st century versions of a very old liturgical season called “Septuagesima”. In the traditional Latin Mass calendar, Septuagesima was not Lent, but it looked like Lent with violet vestments, and it sounded like Lent with no Gloria in the Mass and no use of the “Alleluia.” There are various theories as to its origin, but I sometimes think it might have been a visual, audible cue to a mainly illiterate society to prepare for Lent. In the traditional calendar, today is Septuagesima Sunday, i.e. the Sunday within the seventh decade before Easter. Next Sunday is Sexagesima, followed by Quinqagesima which is the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. As mentioned before, our Latin Mass community and choir want to celebrate more High Masses this year so the Mass on March 3 will be a Sung Mass followed by a covered dish supper with a Mardi Gras theme. We even hope to have a King Cake. If you plan to participate in the supper, please communicate with Tina Jost (843-452-1731 or [email protected]) so that we can coordinate the food types.

Those who know me will, I hope, agree that I do try to be positive and affirm the good in our world and culture. We all need to do that. At times, however, I confess to being overwhelmed by the lack of critical and logical thinking in such a technologically advanced society. We are so gifted and have so much information at our fingertips, yet we can be so stupid. I am referring to things like the positive rejoicing over the passage of a late term abortion law in the State of New York, one of the most radical implement-tations of Roe v. Wade and its companion case. According to those cases, the Court was sure that our Constitution provides the right to abortion although they were not sure where the Constitution provided for such, citing two possible places. In one of its more radical applications, the Court said no State could interfere with the “right” to abortion even in the third trimester if performed for the “health” (not “life”) of the mother. “Health” was not restricted to the physical but was to include the mental and emotional as well. The nominally Catholic governor of New York recently signed this bill into law and rejoiced in doing so. This law means that a child in its ninth month of gestation, even the day before its birth, can be killed. Those strong enough to survive chemically induced abortion can be denied the standard medical treatment given newborns and allowed to die. This is a 21st century version of the Holocaust. Even more telling: the governor of Virginia recently sup-ported a similar bill which did not pass in the Virginia legislature. But what is the media obsessed with? In 1984, the said governor appeared in blackface in a photograph. By no means do I support the belittling of any race or individual, but how does the offense of appearing in blackface thirty-five years ago supersede the wholesale killing of babies with black faces, brown faces and white faces TODAY? One of the consequences of Original Sin was the impairment of the intellect. Indeed, with all our technological ability, we can be a very stupid (or is it simply “evil”?) people.

Despite the challenges of our time, we try to be positive. We name the demons in our world and the demons in our own lives (that’s called “Confession”). Remember: this fallen world has been redeemed; then, have a good week despite it all. Respect God, respect all people, respect life.
