She is still giving back to her local community, helping out the local Queenscliff club but is also currently playing with the Giants team in the Suncorp Super Netball Competition. We congratulate Teigan on her achievement in sport. I encourage you to look for Teigan next time the Giants are playing. We also congratulate Katherine Edney (Class of 2000) who was named as a finalist in the 2019 Archibald Prize. ‘Self-portrait with Ariel’ is based on an image taken when Katherine was pregnant with her first child. I particularly thank Gary Farrar, Ellie’s dad, who spoke with the Stella community about his story. It was the first time that Gary had spoken publicly about his story. We thank him for sharing it with our community. Elizabeth Carnegie, Principal

SOFT PLASTIC PINK BIN PROJECTLaunching the Soft Plastic Pink Bin Project has been a massive goal of mine as the amount of waste each individual goes through on a daily basis, let alone the school community as a collective, is utterly profound and completely overwhelming.

By bringing 4 new recycling bins purely for soft plastic, together we are diverting tonnes of soft plastic waste that would typically end up in landfill. Not only this, but there is a guaranteed closed loop system as the organisation that takes this waste (REDcycle and REPLAS) then transforms the material into new products like benches, tables, pathways, and more that communities, councils and schools can integrate into their environment.

It's amazing to see such great outcomes when all you have to do is put soft plastic in its own bin. With the amazing support and participation shown by the school community only after a few days, it really shows that these types of projects do have the potential to flourish and make a difference, simply by giving students and staff the option to make that conscious change, all whilst bringing major awareness to the issue of waste. I cannot thank enough the amazing Stella Maris staff cohort for enabling me to achieve my goal and for the project to reach its full potential with the help of the Stella family.

SOCIAL JUSTICE FORUMLast week, around twenty Year 11 and 12 students travelled to the annual Mt St Benedict Social Justice Forum. It was a fantastic night full of engaging ideas and discussion about a plethora of social justice issues. The key note speaker was from the 'International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.' I personally found her speech to be very engaging and thought provoking about the social and political implications of weapons that have the potential to harm so many. Additionally, each attendee chose two workshops to attend at different parts of the night from a wide variety of interests. I attended ISRA's 'Islam and Peace' workshop and another on compassionate leadership. I found that it was great to be able to choose the workshops that best suited my personal social justice interests where my thoughts could be challenged and learn my new perspectives and ways to practically apply my passion and make change.

Rebecca Mackenzie

The social justice forum held on the 28 May was an amazing and worthwhile experience where we were able to enrich our understanding on social justice issues which are very relevant in our modern day world. Through attending such memorable event, I became more aware of the world around me and the issues we, as the young generation need to tackle.

The notion of nuclear disarmament which is the basis of the organisation ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) was an issue that I had never thought about previous to the keynote speaker's address. Thanks to such insightful speech, I am now more interested in the campaign to abolish nuclear weapons as I had previously ignored the horrid nature of nuclear arms, especially in our Post Cold War context where we no longer need them for protection. The keynote speaker inspired me to take action on this significant issue.

This night was truly inspirational as I heard the personal story of a refugee from Papua New Guinea in the House of Welcome workshop. Through hearing the voices of such determined individuals who work in areas of social justice or have undergone significant hardships, I was motivated to take action in areas of social justice that interested me and that I gained more knowledge. It was a thought-provoking evening. It is definitely a forum that one cannot miss!

Indigenous Veterans Commemoration ServiceAs part of National Reconciliation Week, the NSW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Veterans and Services Association conducted the annual Indigenous Veterans Commemoration Ceremony around the Pool of Reflection at the Anzac Memorial.

The Ceremony commemorates the service and sacrifice of indigenous veterans who have fought for Australia in every major conflict since the Boer War.

The service began with a Smoking Ceremony and an Acknowledgement of Country and also included a Commemorative Address by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley, Governor of New South Wales, and the Key Note Address by Australian Navy CPO Tina Elliot, a Murri woman.

Samara Torrens, Year 9 proudly represented Stella Maris by attending the service and laying a wreath to mark our thanks and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders service.

SPORT REPORTAFL Congratulations to Kiana Carty and Olivia Smith who played at the NSW All Schools AFL Championships in West Hoxton on Monday, 3 June. Kiana and Olivia were part of the NSWCCC team. The CCC team was outstanding, winning all of their games and the title of NSW State Champions! Well done Kiana and Olivia on this fantastic achievement!

Soccer The NSWCCC Open Soccer Championships were held at Valentine Park on Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 June. Stella had four students in the BBSSSA team: Charlie Gilbert, Elena Buono, Issy Stein and Shay Hollman. The BBSSSA team played very well in the freezing cold and wet conditions. They went through the first day undefeated, and were unlucky to lose only one game on the final day to CGSSSA 1 – 0. All of the Stella girls played extremely well and were a crucial part of the BBSSSA team.

A big congratulations goes to Shay Hollman who was selected into the NSWCCC Open Soccer team after playing so well throughout the tournament. This is a fantastic achievement, especially as Shay is only in Year 8 and has been selected to play in the Open division! Well done Shay!

Snowsports A reminder that all snow sports notes need to be returned to Stella by next Wednesday, 12 June. Stella will be entering teams into the Nothern NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships in Perisher in the July holidays. Information and permission notes have been emailed to all students.

Term 3 and 4 Basketball Permission notes for the Semester 2 (Terms 3 and 4) basketball competition have been emailed to all students. These are to be returned to the Finance Office by Wednesday, 12 June. Teams will be entered according to the number of students who return notes, so it is crucial that notes are returned on time.

Touch Football Program We will be starting a touch football training program in Term 3. This will be coached by Roha Paki, (2018 NSW Touch Coach of the year) and current Australian players Aaliyah Paki and Pihuka Duff. We are very lucky to have these coaches who are experienced in coaching players of all levels, from beginners right up to international teams. The program will be open to students in Years 7, 8 and 9. It will be held on Tuesday afternoon at Keirle Park 3.30pm – 4.30pm throughout Term 3. The group will be split into experienced and developing levels, so all levels of ability can be catered for.

Information and permission notes have been emailed to all students in Years 7 – 9. Notes must be returned to the Finance Office by Friday, 14 June. Places are limited, so notes should be returned as soon as possible.

Athletics Squad The Stella athletics squad will commence training on Monday, 17 June. Trainings will be held at the Sydney Academy of Sport, Narrabeen. The squad will compete in a number of carnivals in Term 3, including the IGSSA twilight carnivals, NSW Athletics relays and nitro event, BBSSSA and the IGSSA Championship. Any student who would like to join the athletics squad should email Mrs Jenny Wickham for information. Permission notes should be returned to the finance office as soon as possible.

Peninsula Cup Soccer Stella will be entering a junior and an open team into the Peninsula Cup soccer competition in Term 3. This will be held on Tuesday (Junior) and Wednesday (Open) afternoons at local venues. Information has been sent to all students. Students must email Ms Clancy to register their interest in trialling for these teams.

Term 3 Pilates Pilates will be continuing in Term 3. This is offered to all students and is a great way for students to improve their strength and fleixibilty for their sports. Classes are held every Thursday morning at 7.30am at school. Permission notes must be returned to the Finance Office by 26 June.

Tennis Lessons Stella will be offering tennis lessons again in Term 3. These are held at Keirle Park Tennis Centre on Monday mornings at 7.20am. Students of all ability levels are able to sign up.
