UNEMPLOYMENT & THE FUTUREAlarming Finding: There is an actual collapse ofthe labor market for 16-24 year olds (due to slow/nojob growth, competition with older workers whocan’t afford to leave the workforce and the lack ofconcrete career or trades pathways that connecteducational choices to employment opportunities.(Drexel University- Center for Labor Markets & Policy)

STEM Enhances all Future Opportunities:The US Dept of Commerce (BLS) reportsunemployment in the tech sector at only 3.8% --with 7-13% job growth for engineers. (USunemployment is still above 9%).

“The highest growing number of jobs is in thetechnology field, and there is more demand forthose jobs than there is supply. We’re going toneed 800,000 more (US) jobs by 2018 incomputer technology alone. In the last threeyears, we’ve only graduated 24,000 in thosesectors and that’s not nearly enough.”

1+1 > 2“STEM Education for the 21st century

must be innovative, relevant, and rigorous for our students. They must see how their STEM learning fits into the world, especially the technology-rich, fast-paced world in which they “live” as digital natives. Our contemporary school-community collaboration model demonstrates how 1+1 can be greater than 2.”
