This hotel project started with each student being assigned a location. We then researched the location in depth and came up with a design idea that would not only fit with the local culture but also educate those visiting.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a very vibrant place. I added curved walls and various accents to give the exciting feel of Rio's culture.

The construction plan shows multiple curved walls and large open spaces.

2Hotel Bom Vida

Hotel Bom Vida

The finishes at Hotel Bom VIda are colorful and inspired by the local materials.

The lobby floor is modeled after the beaches of Ipanema with white and black mosaic stone.

The curved walls are covered in small multi-colored mosaic tiles.

Hotel Bom Vida

The registration desk is usually the first-impression of your stay at a hotel, so I wanted it to make an impression.

The tiles and deep green paint provide a great opo of color while the countertop and lights are very sleek in contrast.

Gaming & Breakroom Decor

Substantial, a young digital development and design studio in the Seattle area, needed a space that would be both fun and functional.

With their recently expanding company, it was necessary to find more space and keep a similar rustic-modern atmosphere. To do this, we used a variety of textures and clean shapes with bright pops of color.

As project manager of my team, I monitored the progress of the designers to ensure we would reach our two-week deadline. Though Project management is something I had not previously considered, I found it challenging and rewarding to keep the group on track and moving toward each deadline.

La Perla Cafe

PRINCIPLES AND ELEMENTS OF DESIGN USED

ELEMENTS• LINE − the flooring runs parallel to the East and

West walls drawing you into the space

• LIGHT − large windows bring in plenty of natural light

• COLOR − Triadic color scheme : red−violet, blue and gold, loosely resembles the German flag

• SHAPE − squares are repeated throughout the space represented in the tables, cabinetry and the artwork

• TEXTURE − the walls are covered in a thatched textured bronze−gold wallpaper providing texture and the accent color

PRINCIPLES• HARMONY − accent colors are spread out,

furniture is varying shaped but unified in finishes

• EMPHASIS − accent colors, large dark wood sections: the bar and retail sections

• RHYTHM − there is repetition of shape, color and texture throughout the space

• BALANCE − the accent walls are opposite each other along with the accent fabric,

• PROPORTION − the café is very open and so the cabinetry, fixtures and art are larger to accommodate making the room feel smaller and more comfortable

8La Perla Cafe

This commercial project was the dream of a German couple who wanted to incorporate their heritage as well as sell the high=end coffee they enjoy.

I loosely used the German flag to come up with a triadic color scheme of oxblood red, royal blue and gold. The tables and chairs are all simple, European design.

La Perla Cafe9

La Perla Cafe

La Perla Cafe was a new commercial space for which we designed a cafe with retail space, managers office and conference room.

These are my elevations of the bar seating area and view out the front window of the cafe.

Finneman Residence

11

The Finneman residence project was themed around Art Deco, a design style the family loved. The family also have a daughter who uses a wheel chair.

The materials chosen were based on two critera: accessbility and style.

The main floor is Terazzo and tile in the powder bath. The upper level has carpet throughout with marmoleum in the bathrooms. The basement has cork throughout with Terazzo in the studio and marmoleum in the bath.

Sketch and Render

13

Sketch and Render

Here are two examples of visual texture created through the application of colored pencil to line drawings. Each chair shows a different stage in the rendering process.

The chair on the left is more fully-developed with applied shadow, whereas the chair on the right shows only a rough concept of applied fabric.

This rendering exercise started with a simple sketch of a chair.

Inspired by the clean lines of the chair, I decided to apply fabric that would contrast the sleek design.

The next step was to scale the pattern of the fabric to the chair. This was my first exercise in furniture sketching. The image was first

traced and then a grid applied.

The grid allows a visual breakdown of each section of the chair, making it easier to recreate. The final step was to draw the chair free-hand.

This study on woodgrain shows an example of the use of mixed media. Various shades of colored pencil and marker used together create the look of a textured hardwood floor.

14

Furniture Model

15

Furniture Model

When it was time to create a furniture model, we were given creative freedom. I knew from the beginning that I wanted my model to have working drawers.

Once the final design had been chosen, I drew it to scale. The scale drawing was used to produce additional isometric views of the piece that were then used to create the 3D model.

16

Color Study

17

Color Study

Using the image of the bird below, I catalogued the ratio of colors present and used guache to visually display them to the right.

What I catalogued was the visual ratio, not the actual amount of each color present. Using the same ratio and colors present, I created a new piece of art.

Using a box of ColorAid samples our task was to match the value of the color with its coordinating value in grey.

The bottom row was painted with guache to match the ColorAid sample.

Analagous Complimentary Triadic

From left to right, these three paintings are a study on composition and color schemes. Using guache once more we were instructed to use any value of the colors placed below each painting.
