Rural deprivation in the South West

Rural areas are substantially more deprived based on the location of deprived people than based on the location

of deprived areas

Page 4: Stephen Wright (SWAN) - Rural is lovely...or is it always so?

Across the South West, only 11 of the 300 most deprived

areas - based on the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2007

(those in the most deprived 20% of all areas across

England) - are classified as rural.

However, 90,300 people of working age in rural areas are receiving some form of DWP benefit – one-quarter of all such claimants across

the South West.
