Stephen’s Story…On September 11, 2001, Stephen Gerard Siller had just gotten off the late shift at Squad 1 located in Park Slope, Brooklyn. He was on his way to play golf with his brothers when his scanner notified him of the first plane hitting the Twin Towers. Immediately, Stephen called his wife Sally and asked her to tell his brothers he would catch up with them later, and then returned to Squad 1 to get his gear.

Stephen then drove his pickup truck to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it was already closed. So he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, rushed on foot through gridlocked traffic from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers where he gave up his life while saving others.

Stephen Siller was the youngest of seven children. At the age of eight Stephen’s father died and a year and a half later he also lost his mother, which left him an orphan to be raised by his older siblings.

Stephen had everything to live for, a great wife, five wonderful children, devoted extended family and friends. Stephen lived live with the following purpose: “While we have time, let us do good.” Stephen’s life and heroic death serve as reminder to us all to live life to the fullest and to spend our time here on earth doing good - this is his legacy.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation was established to honor Stephen’s legacy, as well as the heroic first responders. It has evolved over the years to also honor and support those American heroes that have carried the flag form New York to Iraq and Afghanistan.

5K Tunnel to Towers RunsThe signature Tunnel to Towers Run in New York is

always held on the last Sunday in September. What

started with 1,500 people in September of 2002 has

grown to over 35,000 last year in New York alone.

Retracing Stephen’s last footsteps has become

symbolic of the “Let us do Good” attitude of all

participants. Today, Tunnel to Towers Runs are held

around the world, including London and

Afghanistan.

Proceeds from the runs are used by the Foundation

to support programs which honor our first

responders and military personnel who make

extraordinary sacrifices in the line of duty, including

the Building for America’s Bravest program.

The “Building for America’s Bravest” ProgramBuilding for America’s Bravest, a proud program of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, builds specially adapted, custom designed smart homes to help restore independence and improve the quality of life for our nation’s most catastrophically injured service members.

When the call came, these brave service members responded and made extraordinary sacrifices. Now it is our turn to ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten. The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is steadfast in our determination to provide our most catastrophically injured service members with a smart home through our Building for America’s Bravest program and we invite you to join us.

These service members need homes that work for them. Homes that are built with their individual needs in mind.

“Smart Homes” use adaptive technology to enable great change.

Homes that are energy-efficient, automated and easily accessible.

Homes that restore the service members’ sense of dignity and independence.
