The project will be in its study and engineering phase during summer 2020/21, and preparing to start construction activities in early 2021.

Role Description

Project engineers manage our external service providers to provide engineering and construction solutions for our projects, to ensure they safely meet our business objectives, quality requirements and deliver on time and cost.

There is no design engineering required by the candidate, but the role requires the candidate to use their project management skills to assist with the management of our external service providers.

This role will be working primarily under the guidance of the Senior Project Engineer, with support and direction from the Study Lead when required.

Maintenance of a Deliverables List and Distribution Matrix - tracking when BHP receives deliverables, what is overdue, what revision etc. Notifying the Senior Project Engineer what is going to be late.

Managing the Deliverable Review Workflows – using the distribution matrix, putting received deliverables on review workflows to the relevant BHP personnel (working closely with BHP document control team) and consolidating comments where possible.

HSE and Project Risk identification, assessment, and management – contributing to risk workshops and reviews, discussing how to minimise project and HSE risk, updating the Project Risk Register.

Assisting with project reporting – review of weekly, mid-month, monthly reports and identifying trends with cost and schedule progress i.e. what’s going up/down, early/late.

Assisting with development of BHP internal documentation such as Study Work Plan, Project Execution Strategy, Project Execution Plans and more.

Expectations

The role is office based and the candidate will not be required to attend site.

Exceptional skills in Microsoft Office suite of applications is required (Word, Excel and Visio).

Whilst the candidate will be supported by the project team, our projects are fast paced and under time constraints. The Senior Project Engineer and Study Lead may not always be immediately contactable and the candidate must be able to remain on task or be pro-active if waiting for response from those who are primarily providing direction and guidance.

Due to Covid-19, BHP is currently working under an arrangement where only half the office team is in the office each week, and works from home every other week. As such, we undertake a lot of meetings via Webex and use phone calls frequently, so the candidate needs to be comfortable with communication over these platforms as well as taking direction via email and asking for assistance via phone.

Although it is desirable, technical engineering knowledge is not a pre-requisite and this role is more around project management of our external engineering providers – making sure that they maintain progress to plan as well as meeting our engineering objectives. Someone studying a project management / construction management course would potentially be as qualified as someone studying engineering.

The role will involve reading a lot of technical reports and making comments on the reports in relation to the project and document objectives (the candidate will be supported on what to look for, for each report).

The candidate will be required to take notes during meetings, as directed by the BHP project manager, for actions which BHP need to take.

Ideally the candidate would be comfortable working with a diverse group of people, internally and externally. There will be many people to interact with face to face, via Webex or via phone. Some may not have English as a first language.

This role will involve participation in workshops / brainstorming type activities, contributing to discussions and providing safety shares (basic presentation skills required) at team meetings involving up to 10 people.

Given some meetings will involve external parties who need to take direction from BHP, the candidate also needs to understand when is the appropriate time to contribute and ask questions or let the more senior engineers discuss technical or commercial matters.

Eligibility Requirements

Second last or final year of a relevant undergraduate or postgraduate degree
