About the Section
The Reef 2050 Section is a fast paced, dynamic area of the Department that sets the agenda for the Government’s policy in relation to the Great Barrier Reef. The Reef 2050 Section’s work is high-profile given the Reef is of international and national interest.
The centrepiece of our efforts to improve the health and resilience of the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef is the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan. The Reef 2050 Plan is implemented in a dynamic partnership between the Australian Government, Queensland Government, and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) and is currently undergoing a comprehensive review to ensure the Plan continues to focus on addressing key threats and taking action to support the health and resilience of the Reef.
The Section also manages the Great Barrier Reef Ministerial Forum (chaired by the Minister) and the Reef 2050 Plan Independent Expert Panel (chaired by the former Commonwealth Chief Scientist).
Role
The student will assist with tasks related to the updated Reef 2050 Plan.
Tasks
• Support high level meetings between Queensland Government and Australian Government officials (minute taking, managing arising action items and logistical arrangements etc).

• Coordinating input from various areas of the Department, GBRMPA and the Queensland Government to inform briefing materials, papers and correspondence for Senior Executives, the Great Barrier Reef Ministerial Forum and the Reef 2050 Advisory Bodies.
• Assist in the development of various communication materials (whole of government talking points, fact sheets, social media posts, newsletters etc) and the finalisation of the new Reef 2050 website.
• Contribute to other work undertaken by the section on an ad-hoc basis as required.
Development opportunities
This work will assist the student in understanding work that goes into finalising scheduled reviews of key policy documents in a high-profile area of the Department. It will also assist the student in learning how governance hierarchies operate, from Advisory groups right up to Ministerial level, and how to remain flexible and resilient in a rapidly changing environment.
The student will be given a variety of set tasks for actioning within a collaborative and positive working environment and will be expected to manage their priorities with assistance and support from their supervisor.
Ideal Degree/Discipline
Any field of study would be welcome. Students of environmental science, project management or science communication may find this of particular interest.
