Choose Your Major Carefully - Competitive Selection Process (Impaction)
Majors Criteria SJSU is a fully impacted campus, which means we have more qualified applicants than student spaces available. Due to this shortfall, it is a competitive admission process. Meeting the minimum California State University (CSU) requirements does not guarantee admission to SJSU. Learn more at sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction
Freshman CriteriaCSU eligible freshman applicants will be ranked by major based on a combination of their self-reported GPA (at the time you apply) and official SAT or ACT test scores (called the Eligibility Index or EI). See “Eligibility Index” under the Freshman tab.
Transfer CriteriaCSU eligible transfer applicants will be ranked in each major based on their self-reported GPA. Some programs will give preference to applicants who have completed program-specific preparation courses. For these programs, applicants will be ranked on a combination of their self-reported GPA and the completion of approved program-specific courses. Transfer applicants will be required to complete a supplemental application. See
“Supplemental Application Requirement” section under the Transfer tab.
Preference for “local” applicantsSan José State gives preference to “local” applicants. Freshmen are considered “local” if they will graduate from a high school in Santa Clara County. Transfers are considered
“local” if they will earn the majority of their transferrable units at a college located in Santa Clara or Santa Cruz counties.
Changing MajorYour mandatory orientation, advising and registration will be based on your admission to your choice of major, including if you are assigned undeclared. Change of majors are not permitted during the application and admissions process.
If you wish to change your major after you have enrolled, you will need to go through the formal process to do so after the start of the semester. Please note that being able to change your major is never guaranteed and is by petition only.
Meet all CSU and SJSU Academic Requirements Freshmen - See “Academic Requirements” under the Freshmen tab Transfers - See “Academic Requirements” under the Transfers tab
Apply at csumentor.edu from Saturday, October 1 until Wednesday, November 30, 2016 (11:59 pm PST)
THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THE APPLICATION DEADLINE.
Please note there is a $55 application fee and it is due Friday, December 16. • Use your full, legal name consistently on every application and every document. • If you allow another person to fill out your application, you are still responsible for
meeting all requests for information and deadlines. • Review your application carefully, because you will not be able to make changes
after it has been submitted. • Once you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation number: this is
your receipt and proof that you submitted the application by the deadline.
Application Fee WaiverCalifornia residents or AB540 applicants who face a financial hardship may be eligible for a CSU application fee waiver by completing the CSU fee waiver process prior to submitting the application for admission. Other forms provided by teachers orcounselors, including College Board SAT and EOP forms, are not acceptable forms.Veterans or active military, or dependents, may also may be eligible for a CSU fee waiver.
How to ApplyMeet all Deadlines If you miss an SJSU deadline, we will withdraw your application for admission, and you will not be able to attend SJSU in Fall 2017. If you have an extreme hardship or unusual circumstance that may cause you to miss one of our deadlines, contact [email protected] immediately! It is best to contact us with your questions or concerns before a deadline. This way, we can assist you before action is taken on your account.
Former Students Returning (FSR) Former students who have not attended SJSU for the past two consecutive semesters, and who have not been granted a leave of absence, must reapply for admission and meet all deadlines, conditions and admission requirements currently in effect.
Admission Priority Former students returning may gain admission priority by completing a Re-Admission Petition form (sjsu.edu/registrar/forms) and obtaining departmental approval. Submit the form by January 15, 2017.
Disqualified Students To be considered for admission, former SJSU students who have been disqualified have to complete and submit two forms: the Reinstatement Petition and the Re-Admission Petition forms (sjsu.edu/registrar/forms).
Coursework Outside the U.S.When you fill out the admission application on CSU Mentor, you must include all high schools and colleges/universities attended, including those outside of the U.S. Failure to report an institution could negatively affect our ability to verify your eligibility for admission.
Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) – First Generation College Students EOP is designed for undergraduate students who are considered California residents or AB540 students with a history of low-income (as determined by the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application) and from an educationally disadvantaged background. See the “EOP” section for more details.

Supplemental Application RequirementAll transfer applicants will be required to submit a supplemental application. For most majors (degree programs), transfer applicants are ranked by self-reported GPA per degree program and admitted in sufficient numbers to meet the capacity for that program.
Important! - Supplement Coursework and Criteria Select programs will admit students based on a combination of their self-reported GPA and the completion of program-specific, lower division coursework. These programs are noted in the “Degrees” section.
For these select programs, if two applicants to the same program have the same GPA, preference will be given to the applicant who has completed the greater number of program-specific preparation courses. Similarly, if two applicants have completed the same number of program-specific preparation courses, preference will be given to the one with the higher GPA.
The major specific courses that will be considered are listed at sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction
Transfer Associate DegreeAt SJSU, a California Community College student who has earned the Associate in Arts degree for Transfer (AA-T) or the Associate in Science degree for Transfer (AS-T) will receive priority admission consideration into a similar baccalaureate degree program as long as the student meets all the admission requirements. Verification of degree completion will be required during the application process as well as at final verification prior to enrollment.
Transfers with the AA-T or AS-T degree who do not meet SJSU’s impaction standards (based on their intended major) are not guaranteed admission in a specific major or campus, but will receive priority admission consideration at their local CSU to a program or major that is similar to their associate degree. adegreewithaguarantee.com

Therefore, CSU must reserve the right, even after initial fee payments are made, to increase or modify any listed fees, without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular semester or quarter has begun.
