SterilGARD®III Advance° Design Features • The front panels are lighter andeasier to remove for filter changing.

Class II, Type A2 ApplicationsThe SterilGARD®III Advance°biological safety cabinet isdesigned for sterile product prepa-ration and biological experimenta-tion involving agents of low andmoderate risk.• When exhausted to the room,SterilGARD®III Advance° is classi-fied a Class II, Type A2 cabinet.• Properly vented to the outdoorsthrough a facility exhaust system,SterilGARD®III Advance° exceedsminimum standards for a Class II,Type A2 cabinet (formerly B3).

Momentum AirCurtain IncreasesProtection WithoutRestricting AccessSterilGARD®III Advance° employs aunique momentum air curtain whichoffers an added measure of contain-ment and protection exclusive to theBaker design.• This unique airflow design creates amore impenetrable air barrier ormomentum air curtain at the front ofthe cabinet, increasing the cabinet’sprotective capabilities.• The strategic position of thestainless steel diffuser just belowthe supply filter creates a faster air-flow of a nominal 100 FPM at thefront of the work zone.

• Airflow over the center of the worksurface is relatively slower at a nominal55 FPM.• The resulting air curtain, high velocityreturn air slots, aerodynamically

contoured front opening surfaces, and optimum air intake velocity, combine to minimize turbulence and prevent migration of airborne contaminants intoor out of the work area.

Balanced Airflow and Exhaust Assure UniformityThe SterilGARD®III Advance°features superb airflow characteristicswhich deliver unidirectional, downflowair over the work area for maximumcontainment and protection.• Filtered air descends from top to bottom of the work area in a unidirec-tional flow. Near the center of the work surface, the air current divides; a portion of the downflow air is pulledthrough the back wall grille and theremainder is pulled through the frontperforated grille.

• Simultaneously, room air is pulledthrough the front access opening and into the front perforated grille. It does not enter the work area. The calculated average intake air setpointvelocity at the front access opening is 105 FPM.

• All air is combined under the worksurface. From this point, contaminatedair is pulled under negative pressurethrough a plenum up the rear and sidesof the cabinet into the blower/motor,which blows it into a positive pressureplenum.• From the positive pressure plenum, approximately 30% of the air exits the system through the exhaust filter. The remaining 70% passes through thesupply filter and re-enters the work areaas particulate-free air.

High Velocity Return Air Slots CaptureUnfiltered Air Containment and cleanliness areaccomplished with precise control of airflow volumes and velocities. Aunique feature in the Baker cabinetdesign, the high velocity return airslots, have been proven to maximizethe biological safety cabinet protectivecapabilities.

• High velocity return air slots are located along the side walls of the work area and along the top of theviewscreen.• Air is drawn into these slots at approximately 1,000 FPM, preventingthe escape of particulates and ensuringthat no unfiltered air enters the workarea.• High velocity return air slots locatedalong the top of the sliding viewscreenprevent gases, vapors or particulatesfrom migrating up behind theviewscreen and escaping into the operator’s environment, and preventroom air from migrating down behindthe viewscreen and contaminating thework area.

UniPressureTM PreflowAdvanced Filter Plenum DesignThe SterilGARD®III Advance°incorporates UniPressureTM Preflow, a revolutionary air delivery system whichoffers significant benefits throughunique integration of supply and exhaustHEPA filter assemblies, a telescoping filter mount, an all-steel plenum withadjustable internal damperassembly, and a new horizontal blower/motor configuration.• Located between the HEPA filters, the supply air plenum is config-ured to provide more uniform airflow to the supply filter, while reducingnoise and increasing reserve blower/motor capacity.• The all-steel telescoping plenumclamps directly to the HEPA filters.Force is applied to the full perimeter ofthe filters rather than point force.• A closed-cell neoprene gasket forms an airtight seal around the filter periphery. • The horizontal blower assembly creates more uniform air direction to the supply HEPA filter, thereby reducingnoise, increasing motor reserve andextending filter life.• A new internal damper simplifies airflow balance and cabinet sealing fordecontamination.

Supply and Exhaust Filter PerformanceBecause filters remove microorganismsand airborne particulates (generallycalled aerosols) from the air, the quality, performance and useful life of supply and exhaust filters are criticalconsiderations in the biosafety environment.

• Each filter in each Baker cabinet isscan tested for leaks and tested for overall efficiency by the manufacturer, then individually scan tested by Bakerafter installation to assure leak-free performance.• Minimum filter efficiency is 99.99%for particulates 0.3 micrometers, increased efficiency for particulatesgreater and smaller than 0.3 micro-meters.• Both exhaust and supply HEPA filters can be inserted and removed from the front of the cabinet. This time-saving feature is useful if the cabinet isconnected to an exhaust duct.• A closed-cell neoprene gasket provides an airtight seal between the filter assembly and the metal plenum.

Blower/Motor System Helps ExtendFilter LifeBaker has selected an optimumblower/motor combination to assureperformance and to extend filter life toan average of 7 to 10 years, the longestlife in the industry. The Bakerblower/motor provides a constant

volume of air despite increases in resis-tance due to filter loading, resulting inextremely long filter life as verified bysimulated filter loading tests.

Extended filter life minimizes filterreplacement and decontamination costs, and diminishes the hazard to personnelby reducing the frequency of openingthe contaminated areas of the cabinet. The more filter resistance the blower/motor system can overcome, the longerbetween filter changes.• As particulates fill the filter media, resistance to airflow increases.• The Baker blower/motor is a directdrive permanent split capacitor motor, designed to deliver the maximumamount of filter life for each cabinet.• The blower/motor automatically compensates for filter loading up to60% above the initial pressure dropacross the filter. Beyond that point, the blower/motor has a manual speed control which can be turned up toachieve even longer filter life.• The filter need not be changed untilthe blower/motor system cannot deliveradequate air volume to maintain thenominal setpoint, ±5 FPM.

The Baker exclusive UniPressureTM Preflow Plenum provides quieter, more efficient operation.

Easier On-Site Certification and TestingSeveral SterilGARD®III Advance° designfeatures combine to simplify certificationand maintenance for qualified servicepersonnel, thus reducing downtime andimproving life cycle costs.• A telescoping plenum assembly putsthe supply and exhaust HEPA filterswithin easy reach, and allows the filters to be clamped directly to theplenum against the closed-cell neoprene gasket.• Both exhaust and supply filters can be easily inserted and removed from thefront of the cabinet. This time-saving feature is useful if the cabinet is connected to an exhaust duct or if theroom has a low ceiling.• An internal adjustable damper allowsthe certifier to compensate for changingresistance of supply and exhaust filters;the damper regulates the balancebetween intake and downflow so that theproper air circulation ratios are main-tained.• A manual speed controller allows thecertifier to increase blower/motor speedto compensate for filter loading.

StediVOLT® Motor Speed ControllerMaintains OptimumPerformanceThe Baker exclusive StediVOLT®motorspeed controller reduces the risk of performance degradation and possibleproduct loss due to line voltage fluctuations.• StediVOLT®minimizes changes incabinet performances due to routinevoltage fluctuations, as well as voltagechanges caused by high-demand,brownout conditions.

Exhaust OptionsThe SterilGARD® III Advance° is designedfor Type A2 installations. For added convenience, the cabinet design includesseveral innovative features which offerflexibility.

Both supply and exhaust HEPA filters can be inserted and removed from thefront of the cabinet, allowing filterreplacement without removing exhaustconnections.

Canopy Exhaust Connection (CEC)Laboratories which share commonexhaust systems typically experiencechanges in airflow which can compro-mise cabinet operation. Such problemsinclude (a) too much room air beingdrawn through the cabinet, causingpotential product contamination, or (b)too little air drawn through the cabinet, compromising personnel protection.Located between the cabinet exhaustHEPA filter and the building exhaust system, the canopy exhaust air gap maintains Type A2 cabinet performanceover a range of exhaust flow rates (see chart). Type A2 cabinet performanceis also maintained in the event of totalbuilding exhaust failure. TheSterilGARD® III Advance° canopyexhaust connection (CEC) incorporatesthe following features:• Designed for quick, efficient installa-tion to protect cabinet from performancedegradation caused by in-house exhaustsystem fluctuation.• Unique combination design consists ofan Exhaust Transition (ET) which createsthe desired air gap in the overall connection.• Exhaust connection collar is 10" diameter on the CEC403a (for the 4' cabinet) and 10" diameter on theCEC603a (for the 6' cabinet).

Exhaust Transition (ET) for Hard ConnectionThe exhaust transition (ET) provides ahard connection, or airtight mating ofthe cabinet to the exhaust duct, in whichflow rates for cabinet intake, cabinetexhaust and building exhaust are allequal. The ET403a and ET603a aredesigned for the 4' and 6' cabinets, respectively. The exhaust transitionincorporates the following features: • Rectangular base is easily installed ontop of the cabinet over the exhaust filter, requiring only 4 or 5 bolts.• Design enables filter leak checkingthrough a convenient access panel. • Exhaust connection collar is 10" diameter.

Filtration System• Exhaust and supply filters zero-probed HEPA, both 99.99% efficienton all particles 0.3 micrometers byDOP test.

*Cabinets previously classified as Class II, Type A/B3 are now classified as Class II, Type A2. These cabinets may beexhausted to the room (previous Type A classification) or connected to a facility exhaust system (previous Type B3classification) via a "canopy" connection (previously referred to as "thimble"). NSF 49 (2002) specifies the "canopy"connection only because vented exhaust through a "hard" connection, though technically possible, may not meet NSFcriteria. Consult The Baker Company or your laboratory safety officer for details.
