Warriors to Open Season at Benedictine

STERLING, Kan. – The Sterling College Warrior football team opens its season this week on the road in Atchison against the No. 13 Benedictine College Ravens at 1:00 pm on Sept. 1, 2012. A tough test for Sterling, the Ravens will challenge the Warriors as SC begins its 2012 campaign.

Offensively, the Warriors have questions to answer after a dismal 2011 year. Andy Lambert be-lieves he has found that answer in sophomore quarterback John Cardona. A dual threat, Cardona has the ability to stretch defenses with his arm as well as make the defense pay with his feat. Look for Cardona to lead SC to a better offensive year in 2012.

Sterling’s defense returns most of the starters from a dominant 2011 defense, but SC must replace four defensive backs. Cedrique Smith, a transfer from Azuza Pacific, will provide speed and playmaking ability at the corner position and in special teams. Smith is the 2012 110m Hurdle Track and Field Champion in the NAIA.

Benedictine (1-0) has already played a game this season, defeating Concordia (Neb.) 45-37. Last season, Benedictine defeated Sterling at Smisor Stadium 14-0.

The Benedictine offense was on display against Concordia, racking up 407 yards of total offense including 207 yards on the ground. Impact players for the Ravens are running back Cameron Fore who ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns against Concordia, wide receiver Alex Boyd who had eight receptions for 100 yards against Concordia, and quarterback Bill Noonan who threw for 188 yards and a touchdown while scoring one more touchdown on the ground against Concordia.

On defense, the Ravens will be led by linebackers Andrew Jones and Ray Gragg. Against Con-cordia, Jones collected seven tackles while Gragg recorded six tackles.

The game between Sterling and Benedictine at Larry Wilcox Stadium in Atchison, Kan. will be-gin at 1:00 pm and will be available on the Sterling College Sports Network. The broadcast will begin approximately one hour before game time.

Andy Lambert is entering his ninth season as the head coach of the Sterling College Warrior football program and his sixteenth as a head coach. Lambert has an overall record of 76-78.

In his eight seasons at Sterling, Lambert has gone 46-35, leading the Warriors to top three finishes in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) during five of those seasons. While at Sterling, Lambert has won KCAC Coach of the Year in both 2004 and 2007.

Sterling College took a big drop in 2011 after seven consecutive years of finishing at or above 0.500 and went 1-10. Even though the Warriors struggled with results, the defensive was stellar. The Sterling defense finished in the top 25 in the NAIA in four statistical categories under Lambert. SC ranked fourth in defensive pass efficiency, fifth in pass defense per game, 12th in scoring defense per game, and 22nd in total defense per game. Mike Talton was named to the BSN All-America Team for his performance under Lambert.

Prior to coming to Sterling, Lambert served as head football coach at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois. Lambert was the head coach at Trinity for seven years, but he was associated with TIU football as both a player and coach for fifteen years. During his last three seasons at Trinity, Lambert led the Trojans to an overall record of 22-11. During his final year at Trinity, Lambert’s squad finished with an overall record of 8-3 and 19th national ranking in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Trojans were also Mid-States West co-conference champions in 2003. Lambert was named Mid-States West “Coach of the Year” in both 2003 & 2001.A native of Smith Center, Kansas, Lambert played football for legendary high school coach Roger Barta at Smith Center High School. After graduating from Smith Center High School, Lambert played wide receiver at Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, Kansas.

From Dodge City Community College, Lambert transferred to Trinity International University where he played receiver during his junior and senior seasons.

Andy and his wife Betsy have four daughters: Hannah, Lydia, Emma, and Sylvia.

Lambert holds a master’s degree in education from Chicago State University and a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Trinity International University.

Since the fall of 1979, the Ravens have been guided by one of its own - head coach Larry Wilcox. During his tenure as head coach, the Ravens have compiled an overall record of 229-125.

Coach Wilcox is one of only seven coaches in the history of the NAIA to achieve 200 career wins. With 220 heading into this season, he is only one of three active coaches in the NAIA with more than 200 wins and is fifth on the all-time NAIA wins list.

He has been named Heart of America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times. The Ravens have earned five HAAC titles and qualified for the NAIA playoffs 11 times, which includes a run of nine straight seasons from 1995-2003.

A 1972 graduate of Benedictine College and the Ravens football program, Coach Wilcox began his coaching career at his alma mater when his playing days ended serving as an assistant coach until called on to lead the Ravens.

Just seven years after his graduation, Coach Wilcox was named the 13th coach in the history of the St. Benedict’s/Benedictine College football program and is the program’s all-time win’s leader.
