People you can rely on...At Sterling, we know the pressures you’re under – and what you’re expected to deliver. We’ve worked at the sharp end of the utility industry for thirty years, and shared all its major challenges and changes. So we really do understand the needs of utilities inside out.

Our people have a unique wealth of expertise and depth of experience – much of it drawn from the former Midlands Electricity plc. This covers every area, from conceptual and strategic development through to design, technical, commercial, procurement, project management and operational.

We build long-term, trusted relationships with our clients – based on a really flexible approach, rapid response, a comprehensive range of services and an unswerving commitment to keeping our promises.

So whatever your energy problem, we have the specialised skills, the experience and the resources to help you solve it. And we can manage every aspect of it for you – reliably.

Turning the key...Our service is flexible enabling us to satisfy the demanding requirements of our customers. We frequently tackle urgent and specialised jobs and pride ourselves in meeting tight timescales and budgets.

Our capabilities are proven, we deliver a wide range of utility consultancy services increasingly as turnkey packages. We can provide everything from network design (from low voltage to the highest transmission voltages) to project management, installation and commissioning.

Our reputation has been forged over thirty years of technical excellence and speed of response , working on some of the industry’s largest and most prestigious projects. We have extensive experience with distributed generation schemes including wind farm connections and their associated route identification and negotiations. All of which is supported by our inspection and maintenance services which can incorporate 24/7 emergency callout facility to maximise the availability of these assets.

Safety and the environment are core to all of Sterling activities. The company is Lloyd’s Register accredited (National Electricity Registration Scheme) and through the use of qualified engineers we ensure that safety and environmental considerations are our first and fundamental considerations.

Closing the gap...Our extensive training programmes are now making a serious contribution to closing the skills gap – and developing expertise to ensure network safety, reliability and availability.

We train hundreds of delegates a year who benefit from the experience and knowledge of our professional trainers, all of whom are power engineers and specialists in their own right. We deliver highly practical and vocational training covering all trades and areas including cable jointing, meter fixing, and power systems safety, operations and protection. Seven interactive lecture rooms, cable jointing facilities and a fully functional distribution network with integrated protection systems provide all the right facilities.

Many of our courses, training materials, technical authoring projects and practical arrangements are tailor-made to meet the specific needs of our individual clients.

And we never stand still. We work with academic and industry partners to challenge the status quo and help develop new qualifications at all levels – stretching and inspiring the next generation to meet even more rigorous, demanding and consistent standards.

carbon managementMeeting the challenge...Climate change is starting to affect every business. New legislation will set tough targets for carbon emissions for many businesses. Customers are putting increasing pressure on their suppliers to be greener. With rising energy costs, there’s even more urgency to manage energy usage more effectively and reduce carbon emissions at the same time.

The good news is that you can reap financial benefits now, and improve your carbon position ahead of legislation. Sterling Carbon Management specialise in the assessment, reduction and management of CO2 emissions and can help your business develop and implement a cost-effective carbon management strategy. This may include the implementation of simple energy efficiency measures right through to installing and operating Combined Heat and Power plant or renewable energy generation equipment.

We have the experience and expertise to help you put in place an effective programme and can bring together all the expert practical resources you need. This combination puts us in a unique position to help you tackle this important challenge, and turn it into an opportunity.

Going global...Our UK-trained and qualified chartered engineers provide the best of British power engineering overseas.

Building on the proven resources of the former Midlands Power International, we’ve created a team with over thirty years’ experience of major international operations and projects involving technical, operational and commercial expertise.

Often working through joint support arrangements with blue-chip consultancies, we work collaboratively on all types of energy generation, transmission, distribution and supply projects.

The combination of our project teams, designers, project managers, senior authorisation personnel, design engineers, Safety, Health and Environment managers, due diligence and other specialised engineering resources means we can provide all the relevant skills and services needed by network operators and asset owners.

Getting the picture...What’s below the surface? Using innovative geophysical and topographical survey equipment, we can give you a clear picture of any underground utilities and assets.

Our utility detection service uses a range of sophisticated technology to find and identify buried utilities in any location, and integrate them into plans. Ground-probing radar in particular plays a vital role on greenfield and brownfield sites in differentiating between types of pipe, finding voids, and locating buried utilities. We also use it to detect the location of leakage from fluid-filled cables to prevent contamination.

Inspection of concrete foundations (such as used for self supporting structures) can be quickly and easily carried out, using non-intrusive specialized electronic equipment. This eliminates the need for expensive, time consuming excavation and re-instatement to allow for visual checks. This also reduces the need for landowner compensation due to damage to their property.

And if you have a requirement for wooden pole inspections, – especially in view of new legislation – we provide a full inspection, testing and reporting service.

Extending life...Sterling Switchgear is a new company. Its mission is to extend the working life of existing distribution assets such as vacuum switchgear and transformers.

The innovative technology we’ve developed to do this is already being used by a blue-chip infrastructure company for a major national revalidation and refurbishment programme.

Developed by world-leading vacuum specialists, it provides a highly cost-effective way of avoiding serious risk, meeting legislation and ensuring safety.

The testing, refurbishment and revalidation of vacuum bottles will enable distribution network operators to significantly extend safe operational life, reduce expensive replacement programmes, free up valuable resources and improve capital efficiency.

Growing resources...As well as knowing electricity inside out, we’ve recently extended our resources by investing in a substantial mechanical services operation facility.

With proven expertise and experience of major programmes including full fabrication from power stations to factories, this new addition further strengthens our turnkey capability.

It means that we can now manage or support large electrical infrastructure projects with the construction or refurbishment of any equipment – from pipework for generating plant and CHP units to the non-standard parts and obsolete spares which are often needed for network distribution.

Sterling Mechanical Services will also assist our other divisions and help us further integrate the services we provide, with the ability to manufacture either individual components or complete units.

Investing in tomorrow...Sterling has grown steadily and successfully since we formed in 2004. We are now a group of companies that can confidently take on the demands and challenges of the future.

We’re continually extending our range of services, our capabilities, our resources and our geographical reach. And we’re bringing them all together both for existing and new clients.

We’re reinvesting back into the business to ensure a flow of innovative new technology. And the expertise of our people is being constantly enhanced through our skills development, knowledge transfer, graduate intake and apprenticeship programmes.

All this means that we’re increasingly able to undertake any major project work, manage any activity, and provide any service that a utility company might need.

We look forward to working with you soon.
