DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Page 5: steven holl architects

SPEED OF SHADOW(pressure of light)

THE REVELATIONS OF NEW SPACES, LIKE INTERWOVEN LANGUAGES, DISSOLVE AND REAPPEAR IN LIGHT

Page 6: steven holl architects

POROSITY(void space)

A NEW TOPOLOGICAL OPENNESS IN THE FORM OF A FIELD THAT EXTENDS TO A “HORIZON-STRUCTURE”

Page 7: steven holl architects

CORRELATIONAL PROGRAMMING(programming functionality)

QUESTIONS, COMPARES, AND CONTEMPLATES DIVERSE COMBINATIONS WITHOUT ABSOLUTE CLAIMS TO INSTRUMENTALITY. ITS PURPOSE IS TO MAKE ONE THINK, AND TO OCCUPY SPACE IN NEW WAYS

Page 8: steven holl architects

CRISS CROSSING(movement)

A NEW TOPOLOGICAL OPENNESS IN THE FORM OF A FILED THAT EXTENDS TO A “HORIZON-STRUCTURE”

Page 9: steven holl architects

ENMESHED EXPERIENCE(in-between reality)

THE CONCEPTUAL LOGIC THAT DRIVES A DESIGN IS LINKED TO ITS ULTIMATE PERCEPTION

Pre-war Period War Time

Post-war

Activity level St. James Town

War causes increase in war based manufacturing causing stagnation of other industries including construction.Leads to housing shortage and families sharing dwellings.

Baby boom, housing shortage and mass car traffic cause massive expansion of suburbs. Downtown is rezoned to accommodate high density housing including St. Jamestown. High rise apartment developments are erected for young couples and professionals as high rises give

the greatest density per land use and ultimately greater revenue. Torontonians dislike the removal of older building style (which fostered a specific preferred wholesome

family development) and began to move to communities like the Annex in an attempt to preserve what remained of such communities within Toronto.

Poor immigrants, now allowed easier access to Canada, occupy these high rise developments. Immigrants concerned with quality of life as opposed to building community. Less activity among community members opens street level up to many social negatives. Jamestown with its bad reputation becomes a place where new immigrants only start their lives in Canada. They do not wish to remain as the community is not a place to raise a family. Statistics and residents

confirm that it is not a pleasant place to be. It is a space that is in need of change in order for it to be experi-enced in a positive way.

Occupied by the upper middle class.Low rise, low density comprising of Victorian homes.
