Introduction:

Steven P. Levine bas been associated with the field of environmental and industrial health since 1974

when he began his career with Stauffer Chemical Company. He worked on exposure assessment

and control projects for vinyl chloride monomer, benzidene and lead chromate, phosphorus,

organophosphorus pesticides, and silica. From 1974-1982 he worked for Stauffer, Ford Motor

Company and Oil and Hazardous Materials (OHM) Corp. During that time, he developed and applied

many pollution monitoring procedures for inorganic and organic chemical production and use in the

automobile industry (including isocyanate compounds), and an analytical measurement quality

assurance manual for hazardous waste.

He also served as both committee member and Chair of committees that developed quality control

protocols for measurement instruments, both nationally and internationally. He applied these

protocols to the development and implementation of a laboratory accreditation program for Korea. He

is well published in this field, and both the field and laboratory aspects of exposure assessment in the

workplace and environment are within his areas of expertise, especially for gases and vapors.

The concept and practice of applying ISO-harmonized standards to the field of workplace

occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) was pioneered by his group in 1993.

He has worked with the Brasilian Association for the Prevention of Accidents, the Chamber of

Commerce (SENAC) and the University of Sao Paulo to deliver the OHSMS message in Brasil. He

has worked in similar efforts in Balkan nations, Korea, and most recently with the Ministry of

Manpower of Singapore. He has been on the Advisory Councils of NSF-ISR for ISO 9000 and 14000.

He was on the Advisory Council of the UM Korean Studies Program, and has also been active in

China and Taiwan. In 2000-2001 he is President of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. He

was named one of the ten most influential industrial hygienists in 1998. He brought the World Health

Organization Collaborating Center in Occupational Health to the University of Michigan in 1999.

Research:

Professor Levine has been productive in his research activities, primarily in the peer-reviewed journal

of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. He has had a bi-monthly column in Occupational

Hazards.

One area of current research is Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H) management and policy,

including trans-national policy issues. These areas of research include international standards and

WTO-legal means of ensuring ES&H system quality, the international harmonization of ES&H

management system assessment instruments, field testing of those instruments, third-party

registration of ES&H management systems, and the relationship between U.S. national and

applicable international regulations.

The second major area of research also includes exposure assessment methodology applied to a

wide variety of occupational and environmental situations, such as the use of isocyanate compounds

and manganese fume.
