INTRODUCTION ADVICE
The sound system, of fixed type, isfitted with audiocassette player(radio with audiocassettes) or CDplayer (radio with Compact Discplayer) or CD MP3 player (radiowith Compact Disc MP3 player) andsound graphic equaliser. The soundsystem has been designed accordingto the specific passenger compart-ment characteristics. The specialdesign is in line with the style of thedashboard.
The radio is installed in a user-friendly position for the driver andpassenger and the graphics on thefront panel make location of the con-trols quick, facilitating use.
The CD Changer for 5 discs, if pre-sent, is housed in the upper glovebox of the dashboard, on passengerside.
Below you will find the instructionsfor use, which you are advised toread through carefully. The instruc-tions also contain the procedure forcontrolling the CD Changer throughthe radio. For the instructions foruse of the CD Changer refer to thespecific manual.
Road safety
You are advised to learn how touse the various radio functions (e.g.:storing stations) before starting todrive.
Reception conditions
Reception conditions change con-stantly when driving. Reception maybe disturbed by the presence ofmountains, buildings or bridges par-ticularly when far away from the sta-tion being listened to.
IMPORTANT When receivingtraffic information, the volume maybe higher than normal.
Care and maintenance
The radio structure ensures longoperation with no need for particu-lar maintenance. In the event of afault, contact a Fiat Dealership.
Do not expose cassettes to the sunor high temperatures and put themback in their boxes after use. Toobtain optimum playing conditionsdo not use poor quality cassettesand in any case no longer than C-90.
To clean the front panel only use asoft, antistatic cloth. Cleaning andpolishing products might spoil thesurface.
Cassettes
To obtain optimum playing condi-tions we give the following advice:
– do not use poor quality cassettes,with distortions or labels detached;
Too high a volume whendriving can put the driver’s
life at risk and that of other people.Therefore the volume should al-ways be adjusted in such a way thatit is always possible to hear thenoises of the surrounding environ-ment (e.g.: horns, ambulance, po-lice sirens, etc.).

Compact Disc
Remember that dirt, marks or dis-tortion on Compact Disc can causeskipping. For top performance con-ditions, we give the following advice:
– Only use Compact Discs whichhave the following brand:
– never leave the cassette in theradio when not in use;
– never insert other objects in thecassette slot;
– do not expose cassettes to thesun or high temperatures;
– put cassettes back in their boxesafter use;
– over time, dirt on the playinghead caused by tapes may reduce thehigh notes when playing. You aretherefore advised to clean the headroutinely using a special cleanertaper of the non abrasive type;
– preferably use C-60 cassettes andin any case no longer than C-90 toensure the best playing conditions;
– avoid inserting cassettes withdamage tapes in the radio, especiallyif using C-90 cassettes, as the tapemight come out and get stuck;
– do not lubricate the cassettemechanism;
– do not touch the player headwith magnetic or hard objects.
– After use, put Compact Discsback in their container, to avoidmarks or scratches that may causeskipping when playing.
– Do not expose Compact Discs todirect sunlight, high temperatures ordamp for prolonged lengths of timeto prevent them from bending.
– Do not stick labels or write onthe recorded surface of CompactDiscs with pens or pencils.

CODE Card
This the document that certifiespossession of the radio. The CodeCard contains the radio model, seri-al number and secret code.
Keep the Code Card in a safe place,not in the car.
Secret coding
When the secret coding is activat-ed and radio is removed from thecar battery (or 30 positive terminal),the radio is protected electronically.
The radio can only be switched onentering your personal secret code.
SOUND SECTION
– Mute/Pause function
– Loudness function
– 5-band graphic equalizer
– Separate bass/treble adjustment
– Right/left and front/rear channelbalancing
– Audio Clip Detect function
– Soft Mute function.
ANTITHEFT PROTECTION
The radio is fitted with an antitheftprotection system based on a four-digit secret code that makes theradio unusable.
CAUTIONS
If it is very cold inside the car andthe CD player is used a little afterturning the heater on, a film of dampmay form on the Compact Disc oron the player optics and the soundmay not be perfect. In this case donot use the CD player for at least anhour, so that the condensation dis-solves naturally and normal opera-tion is resumed.
Driving on rough roads with heavyvibrations may cause skipping whenthe CD player is working.
IMPORTANT The CD player canread most of the compression systemscurrently on sale (e.g.: LAME, BLADE,XING, FRAUNHOFER); however,due to the evolution of these systems,reading of all compression formats isnot guaranteed.
IMPORTANT If using copy-pro-tected CDs, a few seconds may be re-quired before the system starts play-back.

INTRODUCTION
As far as Radio, Compact Disc andCd Changer are concerned, please re-fer to the chapter RADIO WITH COM-PACT DISC PLAYER.
As for the MP3 player, read the fol-lowing indications.
MPEG Layer-3 audio decodingtechnology licensed from FraunhoferIIS and Thomson multimedia.
MP3 PLAYER
Besides a normal CD reproduction,the sound system can reproduce alsoCD ROM in which compressed fileshave been recorded in MP3 format. Itoperates as a normal system withCompact Disc player when a CD is in-serted, except for the TRACK NAM-ING/SELECTION (TPM) and CD NAMING(see previous chapter RADIO WITHCOMPACT DISC PLAYER) modes, that aredeactivated.
CD/MP3 reading
When a CD-ROM is inserted in themagazine, two operations will be car-ried out:
1) Scanning of the tracks inside theCD for the file audio detection. Theaudio tracks are the first to be de-tected and this means that the soundsystem plays only these ones. Thesong name with a flashing indication“SCAN” is shown on the display (ex.“MIDNIGHT MOTION SCAN”).
2) Reading of the MP3 tracks to de-termine the song and folder structure.The indication “READING DISC” isshown on the display at this stage. Ittakes about 2 minutes to read a com-plex MP3 structure (made of severalsessions with many folders and songs)on a CD-ROM.
To guarantee optimum playing, usetop quality CDs duplicated at as lowas possible speed.
The CD-ROM reading will be termi-nated in the following cases:
– In case of a correct CD-ROM read-ing and MP3 track identification. In thiscase “MP3” appears on the displayand the playing starts from the firsttrack and the first folder (see nextparagraph PLAY MODE).
– In case the CD-ROM reading is notended after 2 minutes. “CHECKDISC” appears on the display forabout 5 seconds. In this case the soundsystem changes its audio source andgoes back to TUNER mode.
– If MP3 is not found. In this case“NO MP3 FILES” appears on thedisplay for about 5 seconds. The sys-tem changes its audio source and goesback to TUNER mode.

Play mode
During a CD-ROM playing whereMP3 tracks have been recorded, thesound system display will indicate thesong title and its playing time (ex.“MIDNIGHT MOTION 4:37”).
The following operations can be car-ried out while playing:
– single or continuous scroll on thesong title
– ascending or descending scrollthrough the tracks in single, continu-ous or multiple mode.
– ascending or descending scrollthrough the folders (see next para-graph FOLDER STRUCTURE).
DISP
Function enabling to change displayedsettings of the various info present onCD (e.g.: tracks, folder, singer's name,album title, etc.). This function is acti-vated by pressing button 3 (4 DISP)for over 2 seconds, then use the but-ton/knob 10 (VOL PUSH ON/OFF)to select the required display setting.
In MP3 the sound system:
– plays only the MP3 tracks
– plays the tracks in an alphabetic/nu-merical order for any folder (orderedaccording to the same way) (it is bet-ter to place a number, for ex. “01”,“02” or “001” “002” before each filename)
– comes back to the beginning of thelast track each time the radio isswitched on.
During the track selection (see theparagraph TRACK SELECTION (FOR-WARD/BACKWARD) the folder number,the song number and title will be dis-played (ex. “3/13 MIDNIGHT MO-TION“).
The sound system accumulates thenumber of pressures on the preselec-tion buttons (from 1 to 6) to makeeasier the selection, and it skips onlyonce, as it was a single request.
IMPORTANT MP3 tracks record-ed with the variable bit speed methodmay cause differences in the playingtime indicated on the display.
IMPORTANT The CD player canread most of the compression systemscurrently on sale (e.g.: LAME, BLADE,XING, FRAUNHOFER); however,due to the evolution of these systems,reading of all compression formats isnot guaranteed.
Folder structure
The sound system with MP3 player:
– recognizes only the folders con-taining MP3 files
– if the CD-ROM MP3 files containseveral “sub-folders”, their structurebecome a single-level one, that is the“sub-folders” become main folders(see the following example).
