Description:
This is a PowerPoint presentation for the course of General Chemistry II (STK1113), a three-credit hour course offered by the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, UNIMAS. The presentation was done by a group of ten first-year students, i.e. 6 biotechnology (WS47) students and 4 plant science (WS50) students, as part of their coursework for the course. In this presentation, students are required to introduce briefly about the chemistry of Vitamin B12, explain what tetra- and hexadentate ligands are, as well as to assign the systemic name for two coordination compounds.Slides No. 1 to 11 are presented by Wong How Chu.Slides No. 12 to 21 are presented by Tan Shing Cheng.Slides No. 22 to 28 are presented by Jacqueline Tiong.p/s: This PowerPoint presentation has NOT been checked by any expert yet.

INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION

Page 7: STK1113 Group 10 - Chemistry of Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin with a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, especially the formation of blood.

Page 8: STK1113 Group 10 - Chemistry of Vitamin B12

It is structurally the most complicated vitamin

• Vitamin B12 is a collection of cobalt and corrin ring molecules which are defined by their particular vitamin function in the body.

Chemical structure of Vitamin B12

• Systemic IUPAC name is α-(5,6-dimethylbenzimi-dazolyl) cobomidcyanide

LIGANDSLIGANDS

Page 13: STK1113 Group 10 - Chemistry of Vitamin B12

Charged or uncharged molecule, with one or more unshared pairs of electrons, that can attach to a central metallic atom or ion to form an aggregate known as a complex ion (Huheey et al., 1993)

Latin: ligare = “to bind”

In forming a complex, a ligand is said to coordinate to the metal.

Page 15: STK1113 Group 10 - Chemistry of Vitamin B12

A chelating agent which has four groups capable of attachment to a metal ion

Also known as quadridentate ligand

Has 4 lone pairs of electrons

Page 16: STK1113 Group 10 - Chemistry of Vitamin B12

• important for the chelation of iron on hemoglobin

• a tetradentate ligand

Page 17: STK1113 Group 10 - Chemistry of Vitamin B12

Hexadentate ligand is a chelating agent which has 6 groups capable of attachment to a metal ion

Also known as sexadentate ligand

Has 6 lone pairs of electrons

Ethylenediaminetetracetic acid

Used for the removal of heavy metals from animal tissues

Page 19: STK1113 Group 10 - Chemistry of Vitamin B12

The EDTA ion entirely wraps up a metal ion using all the 6 positions

Coordination number = 6, because 6 coordinate bonds are formed by the central metal ion
