Rule ChangesListed below is a summary of the 2012 rule changes. You may access the entire 2012 ASHA Handbook on our website: americanstockhorse.org1. The Novice Eligibility Requirements have been strengthened to help keep the ASHA Novice Division appropriate for beginning riders and their horses. The Novice eligibility for both the regular ASHA show competitor and the collegiate competitor are the same. The Novice Eligibility Requirements now read:

1. Adheres to all non pro eligibility requirements.

2. Has never won an ASHA High-Point or Reserve High Point Championship in any division at any ASHA show or similar association

3. Has never won an End-Of Year High Point Champion or Reserve High Point Champion in any division in ASHA or a similar association.

4. For riders who have no showing experience in cow horse, cutting or any other cattle-working events and less than 4 years showing experience in other classes prior to participating in ASHA.

5. If a member loses their novice eligibility through competition, they may fi nish that year as a novice, In the future, the member is eligible only for Limited Non-Pro, Non-Pro, Open or Green Horse Divisions.

2. The wording in the description of the Non-Pro Divisions, “there will be no jack-pot in this division”, has been deleted making jack pots in the Non Pro Division optional for show managers and exhibitors.

3. In the Equipment and Attire section, more explanation has been made on bits and the use of a mecate.

4. It has been assumed but has not been in writing in the ASHA Handbook that judges may not judge family members. This is now in the Handbook.

5. The 2012 Handbook now states that the trail class should be conducted on natural terrain outside of an arena if at all possible, as outside terrain provides a more realistic setting. But in case of extenuating circumstances, the trail class may be held inside of an arena after another class has been completed or before another class has been initiated.

6. To insure a judge gets a good view of the pleasure class transitions and side views of a horse’s movements, the rulebook now states that the judge judging the pleasure class must judge the class from the center of the arena.

7. The Affi liate section of the By-Laws has been clarifi ed and more clearly stated.

8. In order to provide ASHA members the opportunity to show at any show in the United States without having to pay additional fees, the rule book now states that an ASHA Membership with an ASHA Competition License is all that is mandatory to show in an ASHA approved show. Other fees for participation in other organizations or special series may be off ered, but are optional for an ASHA member. ASHA encourages all ASHA members to participate in their local affi liates, organizations, and opportunities for the special benefi ts that may be off ered and to support local affi liates as they work to further the ASHA program in their area.

Rule Change submittals must be post marked by March 1, 2012 for the 2013 show year. For Rule Change submittal forms, go to the Handbook/Forms tab at www.americanstockhorse.org.

The History & Philosophyof

The AmericanStock Horse Association

The American Stock Horse Association (ASHA) is an outgrowth of a state-wide planning group from the horse industry in Texas which met in the early 1990’s to identify the future needs of the horse industry and to develop programs to meet these future needs. Seven of these individuals, Jack Brainard, Roger Blackmon, Vicki Hoggett, Doug Householder, Bill Jackson, Dennis Sigler and B F Yeates recognized the need for educational programs to ride, train and promote the versatile horse. Aff ordable and available education was always a priority. The leadership developed programs that met these needs and also brought these philosophies to the national versatile horse movement in other organizations.. From the beginning, Texas AgriLife Extension educators such as Bill Jackson, Doug Householder and others helped provide the ground work to move the stock horse versatility philosophy forward. The idea of conducting clinics to ride and train versatile horses as well as holding a clinic preceding every competition was institutionalized. ASHA is meeting these needs today by providing aff ordable versatile stock horse riding and training clinics as well as competitions to measure the success of the education throughout the United States.

ASHA endeavors to be positive and straight forward – always encouraging growth and improvement. Classes are conducted with an eff ort to keep a horse as natural as possible while still training him to be correct and precise. The ASHA pleasure class is completely unique. This may be the most important class off ered because a good horse must be functional and a pleasure to ride. An important job for a horse is to be a means of transportation to get from one task to another. The trail class measures the horse’s ability to handle everyday situations and chores. Obstacles are common sense, everyday encounters and the class is intended to be held on natural terrain. The outside terrain makes the trail class unique and provides horses a diff erent environment from an arena.

The cow horse class is pointed and judged in a more realistic manner than many other cow horse classes off ered. The option of either roping or circling is unique and necessary. Everyone loves a good roping horse, but everyone can’t rope. Having the option of either roping or circling allows the good roping horse to be showcased, but also allows the non-roper a chance to own a good cow horse. Being able to control a cow without roping is a science as old as roping itself. The reining class is separate from the cow horse class. This is by design and is important because some good horses will work a cow very well, but are not good at all of the maneuvers required in a reining horse and some good reining horses may not work a cow very well.

A horse and/or riders past experience may allow them to compete well in one class while learning to also do another class well. ASHA allows exhibitors to enter one class or all four as their situation changes.

6

Page 7: Stock Horse Today Feb 2012

ASHA Competitions, with standardized judging and scoring, serve to measure progress and provide an incentive for further improvement. Riders compare maneuver scores from one competition to the next as they strive for improvement. Exhibitors feel as if they are competing against themselves from one evaluation to the next. Participants tend to encourage each other and celebrate their victories. With this program, both rider and horses improve and eventually become very versatile.

The scoring system is a positive one rather than a negative one which, could lead, to many disqualifi cations. There are very few horses or riders disqualifi ed – this is by design. We believe that a horse and rider should be given credit for what they accomplish rather than disqualifi ed with no score.

These points may not seem signifi cant, but if you look at the many diff erent rules that are being off ered today, you will appreciate ASHA rules. ASHA is fi rmly committed to a positive scoring system and the four separate classes of stock horse pleasure, reining, trail and working cow horse. We recognize that there are many more fun and useful classes in which to show a versatile stock horse. However, in view of time required to conduct a show, we doubt they would measure any feature that is not measured adequately in the four classes that are off ered by ASHA.

ASHA Region 2

Championship ShootoutSubmitted by Emily Peak

November 4-6, 2011, the Alabama Stock Horse Association hosted the American Stock Horse Association’s Regional Championship at the W.O Crawford Arena in Montgomery, AL. Region 2 includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida.

The weekend’s activities began with a Judges Seminar hosted by the ALSHA and held at the Cattleman’s Building downtown. Over 40 participants that included trainers, amateurs, farriers and AQHA judges were shown footage from actual classes during a championship ASHA show. Leading the discussion was ASHA founder, B.F Yeates (AQHA Hall of Fame, educator, and judge) and assisted by Dick Pieper (AQHA,NRCHA,NCHA and ARHA judge) Mozaun McKibben (2011 AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse Champion) and Vicki Hoggett (Executive Director of ASHA). While watching several diff erent runs from each class (Pleasure, Trail, Working Cow and Reining), seminar leaders pointed out the good points and less desirable qualities of each go. The rules and scoring system of each class and division (Open, Non Pro, Limited Non Pro, Novice, Youth and Green Horse) were reviewed as well, in hopes to give a complete understanding to potential judges and competitors alike. The seminar was a huge success and ultimately helped to raise the level of competition through education of everyone involved.

After the seminar, more fellowship was underway with a feast hosted by Dreamland BBQ and sponsored by Lenn & Traci Morris of LT Ranch. Thanks to the amazing ribs, chicken, sides, homemade cookies and banana pudding, no one went away feeling hungry or with a clean shirt!

“Education is the key to growth. People come back for the clinics.

Everybody can help somebody.”-B.F. YeatesOn Saturday morning the 42 clinic participants listened to Dick Pieper give his overview of his teaching philosophy which demonstrates the importance of a strong foundation and how it contributes to not only the versatility of the stock horse but to any discipline. By 9 a.m. the riders were split into 2 groups depending on their skill level and experience. While one group rode with Dick and Mozaun doing exercises for Reining, the other group was in the outdoor pen learning the requirements of the Pleasure Class with B.F. and Vicki. After the groups switched and had lunch, the clinic resumed with Dick and Mozaun going over the Cow Horse class and it’s maneuvers while B.F and Vicki worked with others on the trail course that was set up out in the fi eld of the facility. The philosophy of the ASHA is “Helping You Ride a Better Horse” and the proof of that is watching the improvement of every horse and rider from the clinic to the next day’s show.

After the clinic ended, the show began! Reining was the only event that night and started at 5pm and ended around 9 p.m. just in time for folks to gather around the TV to watch the highly awaited Alabama/LSU football game. 40 degrees and blowing winds could not stop the intense fellowship around the tailgate!

ASHA Welcomes Arizona!

Ed Roberts reported that the fi rst show of the ASHA 2012 show season held in Queens Creek, Arizona on January 14 & 15 was a great show. This is only the second ASHA sanctioned show to be held in Region 6 and word is spreading of the ASHA philosophy. Ed stated that they had a great show with 26 riders! He utilized two judges and the show ran smoothly and everyone enjoyed the show and camaraderie. Brad Barkemeyer and Bob Grant did a fantastic job as clinicians on Saturday. A lot of new faces were there and they are all looking forward to the next show planned in March.

Nutrition Management of the Stock HorseDennis H. Sigler, Ph.D.

Extension Horse SpecialistTexas AgriLife Extension, Texas A&M University

The importance of a balanced nutrition program for the stock horse, ranch horse, performance horse or prospect should not be overlooked. Nutrition affects everything the horse does, including growth, reproduction, milk production, or work. More importantly, improper nutrition or imbalances may create problems and limitations to performance in all stages of production. Shortcuts in the nutritional program for any type of horse is not going to make money, and likely will cost the horse owner more in lost performance, production and overall horse health in the long run.Growing Horses

Proper early development starts even before the foal is born. A complete, balanced nutrition program for the broodmare, especially during the last 90 days of gestation helps assure that the foal gets off to the right start. Mineral intake is critical. Mares which are on pasture and are not supplemented with at least 4 to 5 pounds of a high-quality, balanced concentrate should be provided with a free-choice, loose mineral containing approximately 10 to 12% Ca and P at a 1:1 ratio. Adequate protein intake for the broodmare, likewise, helps assure adequate skeletal development in foals during the later stages of pregnancy. Do not assume that all winter pastures are going to provide all the nutrients needed for optimal fetal development during late pregnancy.Once the foal is on the ground, nutrition becomes even more important. Skeletal growth is primarily comprised of three major components, protein, Ca and P. These nutrients should be provided in proper ratios to the caloric intake to assure that needed nutrients are available for the level of energy the horses are consuming. The energy level basically determines how fast the young horse is trying to grow. If adequate protein and minerals are not available as compared to the level of energy in the diet, horses will simply get fat, with a compromised skeletal structure. This can be disastrous as the horses become heavier and their skeleton is not equipped to handle the added weight, especially when they enter the training program. Protein intake will affect growth rate more than any other nutrient. Therefore, adequate attention needs to be paid to the daily amount and the quality of the protein intake. Young horses actually require specifi c amino acids, not intact proteins. Therefore, horsemen should pay particular attention to amino acid balance, especially lysine, threonine and methionine. Basically, if receive a high-quality protein source such as soybean meal to supply the daily protein needs, the horse will receive adequate levels of these essential amino acids. An 18 month-old growing horse needs about 1.8 lbs of crude protein per day to meet their growth requirements (NRC, 2007). A faster growing yearling may need more protein. If a long yearling is also in training, they need about 1.9 lbs per day. Ca and P also are required in adequate quantities and in proper ratios for optimum skeletal growth to occur. The basic requirements for an 18 month-old yearling for Ca and P are 37 g and 20 g respectively. Ca:P ratio in the total ration (including hay) should be around a 1.5:1 ratio. Since grass hay normally contains about 0.4% Ca and 0.2% P, a concentrate formulated to be fed with grass hay would obviously require a higher level of both Ca and P, with a closer Ca:P ratio. If feeding alfalfa hay (which contains Ca levels as high as 1.5 to 2.0%), Ca and P levels in the concentrate should be adjusted so that the ratio in the total ration does not exceed 2:1. Some trace minerals such as Cu, Zn and Mn also are involved in skeletal growth. A complete and balanced feeding program which provides recommended levels of all trace minerals is crucial to healthy growth and development of the young horse.

24

Page 25: Stock Horse Today Feb 2012

The Working Horse

As a horse begins a training program, bone remodeling is has to tack place in order to build bone strength. Therefore, protein, Ca and P levels in the diet should be increased accordingly. Research by Nielsen et al. (1997), demonstrated that bone remodeling takes place in the young race horse at about 50 to 60 days of training. It has been suggested that by increasing the level of nutrition in the diet prior to this remodeling phase, the chance of injuries such as bucked shins, in the developing young performance horse may be reduced. Nutritional status undoubtedly plays a major role in bone integrity during the early stages of training. Given the investments currently being made in young equine athletes, it is simply not advisable to skimp on the nutritional program. Not only will malnutrition compromise skeletal development, it may limit muscular development and repair. It also may compromise the immune system of the horse, which could further reduce the number of days the horse can stay in training, due to illness. The primary nutritional concern for the mature ranch horse is for total caloric intake, or energy. Anytime a horse does any type of physical work, they burn energy (calories) and that energy must be replaced in the diet. A mature riding horse, which does one hour of hard exercise per day, requires about twice as much digestible energy in the diet as the mature horse at maintenance. This means that the diet of the exercising horse must contain some high energy feedstuffs such as grain or added fat. Supplementing the diet with additional fat is an excellent way to provide needed calories without the danger of carbohydrate overload and without creating the “sugar high” that many horsemen seek to avoid. Even in the mature horse, it is important to feed a balanced diet and to be sure horses receive adequate protein, vitamins and minerals, including salt. The easiest way to assure that the diet of the horse is balanced is to select a concentrate mix which has been formulated for the exercising horse and for the type of forage or hay being used in the diet. Adjustments then can be made in the hay:concentrate ratio to meet the horse’s energy needs. Horses should always receive a minimum of 1% of body weight in hay or roughage and any adjustments to the diet need to be made gradually over a 2 to 3 week period. Total intake of hay and concentrate normally should be between 2 to 2 ½% of body weight, with close to half of that being hay or roughage. If a good quality forage and properly balanced, good quality concentrate is used, very few additional supplements are needed. Feeding management of the working horse is also a key issue. All horses should be fed by weight, not by volume. Horse owners need to know how many pounds of hay and concentrate they feed each day. Any changes in the diet need to made gradually, over a 3 to 4 week period. By monitoring the horse’s body condition, slight adjustments can be made as needed to keep the horse at the proper body condition for the amount of work they are doing. Of course, only good quality, clean hay and concentrate should be fed to horses, as horses are more prone to digestive disturbance than other types of livestock. Plenty of fresh, clean water should be available to horses at all times, except immediately following intense exercise. Basic health care such as regular deworming, teeth care and vaccination programs also helps assure the overall health of the horse and gives peace of mind that the feeding program is being utilized to the fullest extent by the horse. A little extra attention to the nutrition program of your horse will help improve performance, health and well-being of the stock horse.
