but also including the use of an ‘agogo’, which looks like a double cow-bell. When one of the group selected this instrument she soon wished she hadn’t as it had the most complicated beat pattern. Some of the rhythms were simpler to do, like mine, as all I had to remember was to beat to the sound of the word ‘potato’, but pronounced ‘po-TAY-to’. We were soon able to create some authentic samba sounds whilst walking around the hall too – no easy feat (feet?!) I can tell you.

For the final hour we had a taste of African drums. These did not require drumsticks, just our hands. Well that’s what we thought until we tried the larger drums which required not only a drumstick but also a screwdriver – thankfully no D.I.Y was involved. After a little African singing we were then ready to perform, including chorus breaks, a mix of African and samba drums and even some foot tapping!

It was a loud and stormy night before the Samba Drumming workshop – a prediction of

the noise we were going to make but not the atmosphere! We were a group of eleven, keen to enjoy the rhythms of samba drumming.

First of all our instructor led us in body percussion. Simple? Well although it started off similar to ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes’ that’s where the similarity ended. Add in an extra click of the fingers, an alternate tap of the legs and yes we were all fingers and thumbs!

Next we tried our hand at the samba drums, of varying sizes

I must give credit to our excellent instructor who helped us to remember and beat to a variety of rhythms. It was an inspiring and vibrant workshop which enabled us all to try something new. A big thank you also to Broughton Learning in helping to fund this event, as well as Broughton Primary School for the use of its community facilities. Finally the biggest thank you goes to all who attended.

Where to now? Interest has been voiced to have a regular drumming class, which is currently being looked into. So watch this space….

If anyone else would be interested in joining a drumming group, or knows of anyone who might be able to teach/lead such a group, then please let me know.

Highlights of Saturday’s events include master classes on some of Britain’s most fabled instruments including the bagpipes, the hurdy gurdy and the fiddle, a performance from Hampshire vocal harmony group Craig Morgan Robson and an evening dance with English folk band Blowzabella.

Sunday’s programme focuses on world music, with performances from Uganda’s Mityana Choir, samba, African drumming and a Bollywood disco. Many events are free.

Valley Music founder Mary Childs said: “As the big weekend gets closer and closer, the village is becoming increasingly excited about hosting our first ever music festival. We hope families will come from all over Hampshire and our neighbouring counties to help us celebrate the musical heritage of the British Isles and countries around the world.”

Countdown begins to Hampshire’s first Valley Music festival

The countdown has begun to the first ever folk-inspired music festival for North East Hampshire’s Bourne and Test Valleys. Valley Music will bring a packed three-day programme of traditional song, bands, dance and workshops to the beautiful village of St Mary Bourne in just under 30 days time.

The family festival, which will run from June 24 to 26 2011, will take place in venues including the village’s historic church, large community hall and a specially erected tent site near the war memorial.

St Peter's Bell Ringers will kick off a special celebration of English music on the Friday, introducing performances from local schoolchildren along with award-winning folk duo Belshazzar's Feast among others.

Houghton Lodge was chosen as one of the 12 individual houses of exceptional beauty to be a finalist in the competition and the only Historic House to be picked in Hampshire. Regrettably, Houghton Lodge was not awarded the top prize but has taken great delight in being a finalist.

have a wedding without some special guests and whilst we didn’t quite manage the Queen or even David or Victoria Beckham, villagers who do a lot of work with our school were specially invited and joined us in full wedding attire – hats, suits, posh frocks – the works!

In the hall, we established our own ‘pop up museum’ where villagers, staff and parents contributed their wedding dresses, suits and memorabilia for children to explore. Children were entertained by party games with a wedding flavour – our Chair of Governors gamely joined in and had the grass stains on his knee from proposing to Mrs Gravenor one of our support staff (all in fun I might add!)

The effort for the event was extravagant but we all left school that day knowing a truly memorable time had been had by all and the children will remember our celebrations for a long time to come.

Emma JefferiesDeputy Head teacher

Last time I wrote I mentioned the values that we have been

exploring as a School and how this is impacting on learning here at King’s Somborne. What better way to put them to good use than to work together to plan and provide a street party in the playground in celebration of the Royal wedding.

Our children explored the history of the monarchy and why Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding was such an important one in the development of the Royal family. Our youngest children found out about Queens and Kings of the past whilst Year 1/2 created their own magnificent wedding cake from junk items – it was proudly on display for our education Sunday service in church on 8th May.

Each class had a bride and groom as well as full wedding party (best man, father of the bride etc) and our support staff did a marvellous job of producing bouquets of seasonal flowers for each bride. Of course, you can’t

King's Somborne has a right Royal knees up!

With our start date of September 2011 creeping ever closer,

we can now confirm that there will be five sessions to choose from for The Sombornes Pre-

School including six outdoor-learning ‘Forest School’ sessions each month. We also hope to run a Lunch Club every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday if there is sufficient demand.

The committee have been very busy and by the time you read this, the applications for the Pre-School Manager’s post will be in, with interviews

earmarked for the second week of June. More details to follow in our next update, so watch this space!

Finally, if you are interested in sending your child to our village Pre-School or would like to take advantage of the pre-school Lunch Club, please contact Lucy Chadwick on 01794 389 587 or

ingredients / Method

Buy a loaf of good country bread, around 450g, short and fat. Buy some delicious mixed salad greens. Make or buy some grilled vegetables. You may buy cut frozen vegetables like mixed pepper, aubergine, courgettes etc, but dry them in a kitchen cloth before grilling them. Braised small fennels are exquisite. Make your own mayonnaise or buy a good shop brand (but it is best ready made). Mix the mayonnaise with different flavours; it is a good way to get rid of all the half full jars of sauces you may have collected over the last few months.

Put the grilled vegetables into a bowl, sprinkle with olive oil and a touch of ground coriander or cumin. Alternatively add a little pesto, salt/pepper and some chilli for heat, but be careful! Spread over a baking tray and cook at 180°C until very lightly grilled. Toast some slices of bread (1 per person for each tartine). Spread the toasts with a mixture of mayonnaise and English mustard, then put a few slices of saucisson (salami), cooked ham or cold roast beef on top. Place a small portion of grilled vegetables over the meat. Toss some salad with a good dressing and arrange on the plate and then add some thin slices of pear, a sprig of rosemary, some black olives or thin slices of blood orange.

T a R T I n E SWITH SUMMER COMING, LET’S ENJOY SOME FOOD TO PREPARE US FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON! FORGET ALL THE STRESS AND BE INFORMAL. MOST IMPORTANT: BE CREATIVE, DON’T BE SCARED, IT IS SUMMER AFTER ALL! - GERMAIN, CLOS DU MARQUIS

Why not try some other combinations:Spread some fig chutney on the toast, then add some thin slices of chicken breast, cover with camembert and toast in the oven, arrange on a plate with ribbons of courgettes.

Mayonnaise and curry based sauce with tuna flakes or sardines, grilled vegetables, tapenade and shredded mint.

Grilled slice of tuna (rare) with diced tomato quickly pan fried and then add a good dressing with slivers of parmesan on top.

The combinations are endless, remember what you love on holidays, and mix it, invent, play. Terrine and pates, fresh asparagus, artichokes, tapenades, few slices of cold roast beef and horseradish of course!

Buy only one large good quality French cheese, runny and so appetising! Most important, have everything on the table, add some flowers. This meal is a feast, let your guests enjoy and relax without running to the kitchen every five minutes. That is the meaning of having some great tartines.A couple of bottles of rose wine and you are already on your holidays!

Most ingredients are available at the French Pantry.

King's Somborne - Beer & music in the Country

Following on from the success of last year’s event, Kings

Somborne are again hosting an afternoon and evening of local bands, beers and food on Saturday 18th June on the recreation ground in the village.

Once again the event is being staged to raise funds for the upkeep and on-going redevelopment of the village hall and this year will start an hour earlier at 2pm to accommodate the impressive and varied line up of acts that have been assembled. These range from some of the favourite acts last year (such as village based band Broadband) to some new acts (such as Miles Apart) that went down very well at the Romsey Beggars Fair last year. A variety of ages and genres are covered during the afternoon and evening so there is bound to be something for everyone’s tastes!

Supplementing the music, there will be an extensive bar, run by the local pub The Crown Inn and featuring about a dozen local Hampshire real ales (along with a full bar service). Food on offer will include a hog roast, extensive BBQ, fish and chips and sweets and snacks. There will also be a range of arts and craft stalls including stalls ranging from fashion jewellery and accessories to shoes, wellies and childrens books. Talking of children, there will also be a couple of bouncy castles and a children’s entertainer on site during the afternoon.

Extensive car parking will be available on the village recreation ground and all this can be yours for just £5 admission – and this also gets you your souvenir glass and first pint free. For more details just email [email protected]

What happens if illness, injury or just the fact that

we all get older eventually, starts to get in the way of how we can look after our

four legged companions? What if we can’t walk them anymore?

What if their health and wellbeing becomes

compromised because we just can’t do as much as we used to be able to?

A lot of elderly and ill pet owners become very depressed and worried about the fate of their beloved animals and feel that the best thing they can do for them is to rehome them. This fortunately is not true. The Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity for the terminally ill and people in their later years and their much loved, much needed companion animals.

A network of 15,000 volunteers “hold hands” with owners to provide vital loving care for their pets. We keep them together - for example, we’ll walk a dog every day for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital

care, we’ll fetch the cat food, or even clean out the bird cage, etc.Unfortunately not every area in the UK is filled with volunteers. We have a wonderful dog whose owner is now totally unable to walk him. We desperately need some volunteers, even if they can only offer an hour a week to this lovely dog, it will improve his quality of life so much, plus it will give her owner peace of mind.

If anyone can help call Meredith on 01736 758 707 or via email [email protected] Please also check out our website for more details www.cinnamon.org.uk

We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don't quibble if the area is a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen TVs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden extra costs' The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

I was recently at a parents’ evening where the delights of the English Baccalaureate were being explained. It would seem that the top set would have no problem in achieving this qualification, which would be more than useful to them en

route to becoming ‘a doctor’, which was the example given.

The middle band would easily obtain this qualification if they were willing to take a language at GCSE, but if they chose not to, it might have a direct effect on them getting a university place. So, in essence, those with the Baccalaureate would stand a far greater chance of getting in than those without, but we weren’t to worry…

Then the options for the other sets were apparently ‘vocational’ courses at Eastleigh College or Sparsholt, where the course in animal husbandry was described as ‘the care of fluffy animals’.And there we have it, draw what analogies you will. The three ages of man, the class system, square pegs into round holes?

Let’s be clear: there have always been people who are overtly academic, and yes, through hard work and innate ability, they may well find their way into the ‘professions’. Likewise, there are those who, whilst they may not be in the top set, go on to have very successful careers in a myriad of fields, vocational and otherwise.

But what really gets me is the way in which the vocational courses, the trades, crafts and the ‘arts’ for that matter, are so often denigrated by those who consider them worthless, and worse still, who consider themselves superior because they are academic. Why do some hold with that attitude? The ‘care of fluffy animals’ is a case in point. Perhaps there is a lack of understanding that in Hampshire there are indeed animals to be looked after, whether it be tigers at Marwell, the occupants of fisheries, or horses, sheep, or cattle. It may be worth mentioning that there are acres of woodland and shoots to manage, let alone the large arable estates.

Ah, I hear you say, but there’s no money in agriculture and they are subsidiary careers. Comparatively that may be true, but there are plenty of people on the 6.10 a.m. Winchester to Waterloo who are coming to the end of a six-month contract with little hope of getting another, wishing they had a ‘skill’ to fall back on. Despite the differential in financial remuneration, are those of us that work in the ‘trades’ on the whole more content than those on the commute I wonder?

Here we get into deep water: it’s easy to stereotype the working demographic, when loving or loathing what you do on a daily basis occurs across the spectrum. But can it still be that to say ‘I work in

uP THE aRTS anD THE CaREOF FluFFy anImalS

London’ continues to be one of the benchmarks of success, proof that you have ‘achieved’, whilst the vocations, trades, crafts, call them what you will, and the arts, for some are still considered a stigma, proof that you haven’t? In an area such as this are we still categorised by what we do, where we live and what we drive - and if so is that not a tad tragic? Yet when it comes to maintaining or improving the major financial investments that are a car and property, it is these trades that are called upon. If one can afford the very latest luxury car, it takes a specialist mechanic to make sure it always runs properly. And who do you call when you want to make improvements to your house? Ghost Busters? No. It will be any one of the highly skilled tradesmen that we have locally. Their craftsmanship will ensure your investment can only improve long-term, probably more reliably than any banker, currently at least.

With these habitual attitudes to the vocational careers, and with prevailing economic strife making apprenticeship schemes difficult to implement, some skills are under threat, and a few, such as flint walling and thatching, traditional to Hampshire, may soon peter out altogether.

The arts as a career choice are often pilloried, with those going to drama or art colleges seen as ‘copping out’. Yet we consume the arts daily through magazines, radio, television, cinema, books and the internet, on a massive scale .We will happily travel, sometimes thousands of miles, to visit the famous galleries of the world and the lovely Colin Firth got more airtime than Libya post the Oscars. I realise one can count the number of phenomenally successful actors on one hand, but the same applies to accountants, lawyers and architects: can you name them all?

Not all of us are destined for greatness but some of those who have achieved it, in a diversity of careers, have come from deprived and ill-educated backgrounds: it was not the A* that got them to the pinnacle but rather creative thought, drive and determination.

With an ideology that’s so ingrained, it’s hard to say whether society can break with the notion of the arts and vocational courses being inferior. We may appear to celebrate diversity in talents and abilities, but do we in reality? Let’s hope our educators really will strive to walk the walk as well as talk the talk, and gain the freedom genuinely to celebrate and actively support that diversity.

Up the arts and care of fluffy animals, I say! What do you think?

A fall does it not? You know when you get an idea and attached to it is the phrase ‘what can possibly go wrong?’

Well, it was an unseasonably warm Saturday, Star I and two chums had been bemoaning the fact that the local hills no longer presented any challenge to their long boarding prowess.

Lovely friend and I had already debated the fact that our offspring were, despite being banned from the roads, keen to emulate the antics of their U-Tube San Francisco long boarding heroes. It would only be a matter of time before they too were weaving in and out of the traffic down hills various, all a bit too much for our local market town we thought and anyway if we didn’t take the matter in hand there was bound to be an accident before long...

Awash with local knowledge as to the whereabouts of the best, virtually traffic free, hills and keen to gain maximum ‘Cool Mum’ points I suggested a trip to local chocolate box thatched village where there are three perfect slopes. And so it was that Star I, two chums and Star II packed all their gear into the Trusty Renault and I found space for water, flapjack and...plasters just in case.

We parked on a tree lined hill, ‘Blimey Mum we’re not boarding down here, it’s suicidal!!’ As they donned helmets and pads I instructed them that the second more gentle incline was about a quarter of a mile away up the hill and at the end of a tarmac track, so away the scooted. Meanwhile Star I, keen to be in on the act, had so much protective gear on he resembled an animated member of the Terracotta Army. With skate board under arm Star II manfully followed on until the lay of the land was flat enough for the virgin run.

“I’m just going to sit on it Mum, why does it keep going into the stingers?

Unbeknown to us Star I had been ‘repairing’ said skateboard to the point where one wheel was jammed on a permanent course...to the left. We tried all sorts of techniques, leaning to the right, tilting the board slightly, all to no avail, into the stinging nettles we went repeatedly. Meanwhile Star I and two chums had returned, “That was rubbish Mum, thought you said there were good hills here”. The word ‘ungrateful’ sprang to mind but not before Chum One saved the day by saying, “Yeah but this one looks more like it!!”

The words “Oh be careful...” hung in the air as he sped off down the hill to our right. Now I have to say that this hill was a little steeper than I had imagined, Chum One rapidly picked up an alarming amount of speed that made the board wobble and it was only due to the lane flattening out at the bottom and then rising sharply that Chum One, now whooping with delight, was able to stop. Star I announced, “Well I’m not doing that”. Star II, although significantly younger, adopted a macho pose and said “Yeah me neither”.

PRIDE COmES BEFORE...However Chum Two was not prepared to be outdone and amid cries of “No I don’t think you should!”, set off down the hill. The combination of gradient, and lightness of frame meant Chum Two quickly picked up speed, reaching maximum velocity a little way from the bottom where there was some gravel to be negotiated; apparently…the board became uncontrollable. Star I said solemnly, “That’s because they’re the wrong wheels.”

What followed was a fall of spectacular proportions. Chum Two rolled and tumbled with great momentum; had this been gymnastics it would have been 10s all

round. Unfortunately there was no soft landing.

I felt sure we were looking at compound fractures at the very least as I sprinted off down the hill but mercifully no, our brave little friend, it appeared, had all the attributes of a rubber ball both physically and mentally. Having checked the movement in all extremities it was clear there were no fractures just cuts and grazes and the howling had given way to bouts of laughter. As the others arrived I propped him up on his board and elevated the cut leg on a pile of boarding helmets and then sprinted back (in very inappropriate shoes) some quarter of a mile to get the Trusty Renault.

Screeching to a halt at the scene I was met with uncontrollable guffawing, “You should have seen yourself running Mum all we could see was your head bobbing up and down above the hedge, classic!!” Ummmm very amusing, little did they know I was now in panic mode. I mean why was there so little blood, not that I’m desperate for copious red stuff, but with a fall like that should there not have been more?

Then I had a Spielberg moment, you know when the sky rapidly recedes behind you, two horrors occurred to me. One:dear Chum Two may have internal bleeding behind the knee and two: the lovely parents of said Chum were due to go away on a very special celebratory weekend the following day ...but if hospital was needed?! AND this is all my fault!!!!

Burly Chum One lifted Chum Two into the front of the Trusty Renault and managed to crack his head on the side of the car as well; great let's add in a bit of concussion for good measure. Stars I and II threw all boards and clobber in the boot and reached for the flapjack whilst I administered damp tissues to wounds various and phoned lovely friend saying we were coming back, no need to worry but did she have an ice pack handy. Then off we screeched leaving ‘Cool Mum’ points spinning in the dust.

As it happened it was lucky escapes all round; robust Chum Two after major TLC from mum was absolutely fine, lovely friends got away for their weekend and I regained my title as ‘crap parent’.

Excellent.
