Editorial

“Are we nearly there yet?” is something we will not hear so much this year. Most of

us will not have a holiday or if you have a few days off there are likely to be spent at home. We are not nearly at end of the pandemic but there are signs that things are easing. Beauty salons and nail bars are opening which to me is a significant step forward. What good things are there coming out of this? For many people it has been a (forced) chance to reassess your life and think about what is important. We can enjoy where we live and the countryside. We can value community life and look out for each other. We are valuing peace and quiet. Do we really want to go back to the rat race? We can appreciate jobs that a few months ago were thought of as low grade unskilled. Whether you are going away or not, enjoy the Summer.

VJ Day : 15th August

Allied troops celebrating in London Image used by kind permission of the Imperial War Museum 15 August 2020 is the 75th anniversary of VJ Day, marking both the surrender of Japan and the end of the Second World War.

The last man to die who is recorded on Stone war memorial was Gunner Dennis Seaton of Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars Anti-Tank unit. In fact his sudden and unexplained death was just after the end of the war on 2nd January 1946 at the age of 37. He came from Belle Vue in Stone and lived with his wife and fourteen month old son. Before the war he worked at St. John’s Hospital and during the war he worked on anti-aircraft search lights.

Sergeant Bill Jessett of the Royal Army Service Corps lived in Dinton but had been born in Canada after his family emigrated. He lost his brother Edwin in the First World War. He joined the regular army before the war and went with the BEF to

France. He was evacuated from Dunkirk. He later went with his unit to the Far East and captured by the Japanese in 1942. He was held as a prisoner of war in Thailand from where he sent postcards with pre-printed information.

His death certificate says he was killed at sea but it seems he survived the war but went missing during repatriation. His family received a letter from friends arranging to meet up after war. They put a notice in The Bucks Herald and three men replied all saying he had survived. What happened, whether his troop ship was sunk or he died of sickness is a mystery.

STONE LOCAL HISTORY GROUP plans and updates, August 2020 Like all similar organisations and mindful of the wellbeing of our members, the Stone Local History Group have cancelled all meetings and outings until the end of this year. Depending on government guidelines and our own assessment of safety, we have rescheduled all meetings and the outings to Highclere and Nuffield Place to 2021. Current subscriptions will now run until the end of 2021. We are, however, continuing to produce and circulate by email or post, our monthly newsletter - a 2-3 page illustrated Newsletter with no News! - but lots of information on all sorts of aspects of village life and history taken from our archives. Last month we had items about Star Lodge demolished for the Coldharbour roundabout, family memories of WWII including Chloe’s father’s hit pop record, John Reed’s family and the Aylesbury bombing, and Evelyn Alcock’s memories of the families in the new council houses at Bittenham Close and their evacuees. We are also running a series of the delightful memoirs of a small child evacuated to her Ford grandparents in 1939. The July number included more of these memoirs, an account of a bomber crash in 1939 in Stone, the fascinating occupants of Dinton Hall over 300 years, and memories of the Little House opposite the Waggon from Sue Spinks. Future issues will cover the story of George Woodford, born in Stone and for many years a missionary in Bengal. He was torpedoed in 1918 on a voyage back to India and rescued by an American ship off Ushant. In retirement he came back here and was Minister at the Stone Methodist Chapel for 20 years. We are also planning more items – The C19 Hartwell Temperance Festivals, the history of the Stone Pauper Lunatic Asylum, and much more. If non-members of SLHG would like to receive this free Newsletter by email during the virus crisis, please ask Carole: [email protected]

Letter from Aston Sandford

In earlier Letters on the history of Aston Sandford Church I have occasionally mentioned the patrons of the church.

The legal right to present to the Bishop a parish priest for appointment (known as presentation) is legally called an advowson, and the possessor of that right is known as a patron. As I understand it the patron can be an individual (or jointly or by rotation), the Crown, a bishop, a college, a charity or other religious body. According to The Companion to the Church of England: A Glossary every parish has its patron, but who is the patron is a matter of the history of the parish and of its origins. Some patrons will be descendants of the original donor of the church itself, the donor’s reward being the right to choose the incumbent. Nowadays patrons still have some involvement in the appointment process.

In Aston Sandford the advowson ran with the manor for centuries; the proper expression is ‘appendant to the manor’ – in other words whoever owned the manor owned the advowson. Some time between 1745 (when the manor was in possession of Charles Price, who had been High Sheriff of Bucks in 1742) and 1783 the manor and its estate was conveyed to Henry Hurt, of St Stephen, Coleman Street, London. He died in 1785, and he bequeathed the manor and advowson to his granddaughter, Susanna Gines, whose father William was a banker in London. In 1789 Susannah married John Barber, an eminent silversmith of Cheapside, City of London, and Denmark Hill, then in Surrey and now a London suburb. On her marriage the manor and the advowson passed to her husband, as the law required in those days. Before her marriage Susanna had lived in Olney when the Rev Thomas Scott was curate there and he sought her help in gaining the living at Aston Sandford.

John Barber died in 1809, and the manor and advowson passed back to Susanna.

Susanna, who lived in West Hill Lodge, Brighton for some years, died in 1846. She is buried in the chancel of Aston Sandford Church and there is a touching memorial to her on the wall above, where she is described as ‘the proprietor’.

The inscription on the memorial to Susanna Barber

Parish News 11 August 2020

Susanna’s eldest son was the Rev John Hurt Barber, who had been presented to the living of Aston Sandford on the death of the Rev Thomas Scott. In September 1826, while still Rector there, he married, in St George’s, Hanover Square, Lady Millicent Acheson, the youngest daughter of the Earl of Gosford. The marriage was announced in the Gentlemen’s Magazine and was no doubt something of a grand affair. By the time of his mother’s death in 1846 John was Vicar of Little Stukeley near Huntingdon. He died in 1872 aged 79. In the 1871 census he is recorded as living in 15 Montagu Square, London (quite a grand house, south of Marylebone Station and the Marylebone Road), and as being a retired priest. I can find no trace of any children of the marriage. Of his five sisters the eldest (Susanna of course) married the Rev Henry Alford, who became Rector of Aston Sandford in 1848, succeeding the Rev Stephen Hurt Langston who had taken over from John Hurt Barber – Stephen’s mother had been a Gines and thus related to John via his mother. I would have assumed that John Hurt Barber inherited the manorial rights and advowson from his mother, but by 1859 ownership had been acquired by the Dover family (and solely by John Dover from 1873). I have found an extract from, of all things, Aston Sandford Post Office book in 1851 which records that the annual value of the living is ‘£135, in the gift of the representatives of the late Mrs S Barber’. That may imply that some five years after her death her estate had not been wound up, and it was perhaps the case that ownership was never in the hands of John Hurt Barber or any other Barber, but passed from her executors on the sale of the Manor to the Dover family. The patronage remained in the Dover family until the sale of the estate in 1909. The Victoria County History of Buckinghamshire, published in 1927, noted that the advowson of Aston Sandford had always passed with the manor, but recorded that the advowson was sold ‘recently’ to Mrs A A Pargiter ‘who is the present patron’. This is a reference to Mrs Mary Louise Rundle Pargiter, the wife of the Rev Alfred Arthur Pargiter, who was the Vicar of Towersey when they married in Warwick in 1909; she was 42 and he was 51. He was still shown as Vicar there in the 1911 census, but by 1919/20 they had moved to Buckland Newland, in Dorset. At some point Mrs Pargiter acquired the advowson. She may have acquired it on the sale of the estate in 1909 (she married in April, and the sale was in June), or in the years that followed while she lived at Towersey. Mary Pargiter herself is a bit of a mystery. If I have correctly identified her she was born in Antigua, in the West Indies, in 1869, and her maiden name was Barrett. In the 1901 census she was living in Lillington, in Derbyshire, in the household of William C Grimsdick and his wife Sarah – and was recorded as ‘adopted’. No children of the Grimsdicks are listed in the census record in 1901 nor in the 1891 census, where Mary is listed as living with William and Sarah, nor in the 1881 census where Mary is not shown. William is shown in the 1901 census as ‘living on [his] own means’. Why Mary came to be living with them, and when she was adopted by them, is not known.

Parish News 12 August 2020

By the time of the Order in Council of 1939 under which the patronage transferred to Peaches Trust (see last month’s Letter) the Pargiters were living in Mazoe, Beaumont, Jersey. Mary died in St Hellier in 1960, aged 91, and her husband died there in 1966, aged 99. On the transfer of Aston Sandford to Haddenham Benefice in 1985 the patronage transferred again – this time to Rochester Cathedral. Of which more anon. GARDENING NOTES – AUGUST 2020 has so far been an unusual and in many ways difficult time for our gardens. A warm and wet start to the year, followed by some dry and at times very hot weather, plus a few late frosts. The overall effect however does seem to have produced early flowering and harvesting. I hope strawberry growers had more luck with their plants than I did. For some reason they seemed to flower ok but did not produce any fruit, but they still need to be tidied up. It is best to remove 3 year old plants, and at the same time cut out most of the runners just leave enough to plant a new row. Make sure all the beans and peas are picked before they go old, sweet corn should be ready to eat, onions will soon ready to harvest, but do not be in too much of a hurry, leave until the tops have fully died down. Fruit crops such as loganberries and similar types which have fruited, and Summer fruiting raspberries, will need all this year’s growth cut out and the new canes tying in. If there are too many it is best to cut out the weaker ones. PS

We will continue to review these measures and our opening hours and hope to be able to reintroduce more facilities and services in the future. This is a new experience for all British libraries whether run by the community or county and we will learn together what works and what we can do differently. The Trustees of the Haddenham Community Library are relieved and very happy to welcome you back into the library and look forward to seeing and hearing from you as we learn to work together in this new environment. Hartwell Horticultural Show 1866. Best Shirt Prize result! There have been many local flower and vegetable shows over the years but never, as far have I known, any virtual ones. Horticultural shows started in the 1830s and became very popular towards the middle of the Nineteenth Century. Gardening was popular with all levels of society from the wealthy who collected exotic plants, the middling sort who copied aristocratic gardens in their own homes and the working people who grew plants for food. Easier travel and rising living standards encouraged this. There were local societies in the Nineteenth Century which were active into the Twentieth Century. One such event was the annual Hartwell Horticultural Society show which was held on Monday 30th July 1866i It was held at the Bugle Horn and well attended as in previous years. There were the twelve different classes to enter for including the usual range of prizes for vegetables and flowers. Gooseberries featured in the show with three classes with prizes for groups of four and eight fruits one for the heaviest berries. The heaviest berry competition awarded prizes for the best ten entrants. The prize for the heaviest was won by James Showler and was over 79 pennyweights which is about a quarter of a pound or a tenth of a kilogramme. Strangely the winner of the previous year, a Mr. Kersey, did not enter again. Where do you go from winning that accolade? There was a prize for wild flowers, dish of vegetables, best cultivated garden, best potatoes, vase of flowers and a competition for the best handmade man’s shirt. Sadly there was only one entrant a Mrs W Turnham, who won. I wonder what happened to the shirt? There was also a competition for boiled potatoes and the entries were distributed to cottagers and widows. Reading the report you see surnames which crop up over the years such as Small, Woodford, Scutchings and Lee. The day ended with a dinner for fifty people with toasts and songs. Somebody proposed next year having separate prizes for different vegetables. They certainly knew how to enjoy themselves. Competitions like this would be open to everyone: rich and poor, young and old.

NEWS FROM CHAPEL HILL STONE METHODIST CHAPEL Eythrope Road, Stone HP17 8PH Minister: Revd. Keith Edwards Tel: 01296423363 [email protected] Village contact: Mrs. Sue Spinks Clowesbourne, Upton, HP17 8UA [email protected]

The Chapel with heart, at the heart of the village

Our Minister, Keith Edwards, has returned to his pastoral work following his unexpectedly eventful Sabbatical. He was resigned to the fact that his plans for enhancing his woodworking skills through classes and workshops would be at best restricted, at worst cancelled, because of the pandemic; what he didn’t expect was to become a victim of Covid-19 for the first three weeks of his break, or to have to care for a gravely ill – now recovering - parent in the closing weeks. We are all looking forward to welcoming Keith back amongst us. Hopefully by the time you read this, Sunday Services will have resumed in the Chapel, even if not as we have known before. The notes on regulations, restrictions, health and safety, cleaning, sanitizing, registering names and so on – and on – fill a bulging file. But we plough on because we all want to be safe and to look after each other. If the strange and frankly frightening events of this Spring and Summer have brought home one thing to all of us it is that, as John Donne wrote, “No man is an island, sufficient to himself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” How we have come to rely on each other in our everyday lives: shopping, visiting, phoning, to keep each other safe and well. We have come to value even more the workers in our National Health Service and those who have kept our shops stocked and serving. As our lives assume a more ‘normal’ aspect, let’s remember that one and all, we are part of God’s family, bound together in fellowship in His love.

Vacancy : Visitor Co-ordinator, Buckingham Archdeaconry Clergy Charity

The Archdeacon of Buckingham’s Clergy Charity is a small Charity set up to provide financial support to clergy in the Archdeaconry, also their widows in times of need. The Trustees comprise the Archdeacon of Buckingham, the Bishop of Buckingham and three Lay members. Whilst the needs of the clergy are generally well known to the Archdeacon, the clergy widows are personally visited by lay people in order to provide both pastoral support and to establish if the Charity can help with any specific significant financial issue. Currently there are six visitors based in different parts of the county who have been co-ordinated on a voluntary basis by a Visitor Co-ordinator for more than a decade. The Co-ordinator now wishes to relinquish the voluntary Co-ordinator's role though will continue to visit a small number of clergy widows. The Trustees are therefore looking for someone to continue with this valuable work. Specifically, this entails the responsibility of ensuring the continued visiting of those who wish it by the pool of Visitors (there are currently 27 widows with 6 volunteer visitors) and to feed back to the Trustees any instances of financial need which could be supported by the Charity. The Visitor Co-ordinator's responsibilities include:

• To ensure there are enough lay visitors so that each widow receives a visit at least every three months (or more frequently according to need)

• To collate information from all the visitors, provide a report for the Trustees and advise of any specific financial need when attending their meetings three times a year.

• Co-ordinate the annual luncheon held for the widows and visitors, usually held in June at either the Bishop of Buckingham's home or another venue within the Archdeaconry.

• Take on the visiting of a small number of widows.

• The person the Trustees are looking for is someone who will predominantly provide a listening ear to the concerns of the widows and be able to empathise with their current situation which can vary from being very financially secure and/or physically independent to possibly housebound or in a Care Home and/or financially in need. You will need to have the use of a car for which the Charity offers reimbursement for mileage. An honorarium will also be paid for this role. In addition you should have the use of a telephone and some expertise in the use of a computer in order to send and receive e mails and to produce written reports for the Archdeacon and the Trustees at their meetings. For an informal discussion about the role please contact the Archdeacon of Buckingham. Telephone: 01865 208266 or email [email protected]

Mystery House No. 4 answer (from Page 15)

Laburnum Cottage, Stone Laburnum Cottage, next to the Waggon and Horses (now the Jeera Indian Restaurant), was originally built for Fred Plested. Fred and his brother Ernie, who lived at The Laurels opposite the pond, took over the family business, Plested’s Yard, from their father and ran it for over 70 years as blacksmiths, coachbuilders, wheelwrights, carpenters, timber merchants - and the village undertakers. In 1957 Tom and Hazel Elliott, who had taken over the village dairy business from Reg Lanchbury in 1957, bought Laburnum Cottage and lived there with their 3 children until Tom’s retirement in 1984. The dairy itself was in the brick building to the right, next to the Recreation Ground. The milk came from Nestles then County Dairies and Hazel bottled Channel Island milk from local farms. First from a Bedford van, then a milk float, Tom sold milk (4 1/2d a pint in 1957), cream and eggs and a selection of groceries and delivered every day. Many young local lads helped with the business as first jobs and Tom kept an eye on vulnerable villagers as he did his rounds. Hazel was a popular member of the Stone Young Wives and other social groups in the village. The dairy closed in 1984 when Tom was no longer well enough to continue, and the family moved to Thame. After Tom died Hazel returned to Churchway, Stone. Permission was given to develop the site and Laburnum Cottage was demolished and replaced by Corn Close. Stone Local History Group
