We all dream of living in a chocolate box cottage but very rarely does the opportunity arise to actually purchase one...
Situated close to Formby village, this traditional thatched cottage is simply beautiful. Parts of the property date back to the early 17th Century and the house boasts a wealth of original features.

The affluent town of Formby is a much sought after location, and it’s not at all hard
to see why. With its mile upon mile of glorious
beaches and sand dunes edged with sweeping
coastal pinewoods, the stunning countryside that
borders the town to the east, not to mention
the superb array of shops and amenities, it’s a
place where one can truly enjoy the very best of
both worlds. Located in the heart of the town is
Stoneyhurst Cottage, a picture-perfect thatched
cottage that has been a much-loved family home
for the past 19 years.

“This house has such character,” says Madeleine, “and it
was the ‘chocolate box’ look that initially attracted us; it’s just so
pretty. It was in need of some work when we bought it back in
1996, but it was so unique that I don’t think anything could have
put us off and the end result is so satisfying.”

“It was quite a dark house,” says Madeleine, “so we’ve lightened up the décor
by using a very neutral colour pallet throughout, we put in a lovely contemporary
kitchen with clean, white units and we also added a conservatory that can be
accessed through a door from the living room and French doors from the dining
room, so natural light floods in.” “We also had the roof re-thatched in 2008,”
adds John, “and during the process we were able to lift it slightly at the back which
enabled us to create two extra bedrooms and a bathroom.”

“The layout of the house has worked incredibly well for us over the years,” says Madeleine, “it almost feels open plan. Our grandchildren love to come to visit and we love to entertain, and no
matter how many people are here we never get the feeling of being on top of one another.” “It’s also a house that works well throughout the seasons,” says John, “as the thatch keeps it cool in the summer
and warm in the winter.” “And the garden has given us both an awful lot of pleasure,” says Madeleine. “If the weather is slightly inclement we can enjoy it from the comfort of the conservatory, but when the
sun is shining we love eating out on the patio or just sitting and enjoying the scenery. It’s a really beautiful cottage garden with baskets everywhere, mature trees and borders of shrubs and flowers. We’ve
worked hard to develop it, but it’s been well worth the time and effort and it’s something that I will definitely miss.”
