T he commencement of a brand new academic year always holds a high level of enthusiasm and hope. For us at the Stonyhurst Batangas City Campus, school opening is an annual pledge of commitment to collaborate and work in part-nership with all the stakeholders of the school to bring about success in all as-
pects of student learning. This is the time when we renew our faith in each other to give our best effort in inspiring all the Valiant Knights to challenge themselves and achieve as best as they can. Whether you are new to the school, to the city or the country, or are simply com-ing back from your well-deserved summer break, the first day of school is always a memorable moment. For everyone—students, parents, faculty, and staff—school home-coming brings an amazing feeling of new beginnings and a fresh start. No matter how the previous year had been, a new school year ushers in a whole new set of experiences that will make us learn and grow.
As the School Principal of one of the 10 Best International Schools in the Philip-
pines, I am honored and blessed to continue working with such amazing students, par-
ents, faculty, and staff. It is indeed a gift to share my passion for education with such a
driven, collaborative, and hardworking community. I am optimistic that we will have a
fruitful and fulfilling year as we continue our mission of developing learners who possess
character and who will be competent, committed to achieve, collaborative, and creative
in the 21st century. Brace yourselves for a whole new adventure that will bring about growth and de-velopment. With the many learning opportunities that are available in school throughout the year, there will be no excuse for anyone not to embrace the challenge to achieve and become better. In the spirit of rigor, growth mindset, and grit, we are exhorting all the Valiant Knights to be bold and brave in deepening your learning of the 5Cs and lov-ingly embracing these after so that you can empower yourselves to live each day with these values in your hearts and use these as you pursue your dreams. On behalf of the Management and Staff of Stonyhurst Batangas, I would like to welcome everyone back to the school and to academic year 2019-2020. May this year be one that will once again make us all inspired to work together towards the attainment of all our aspirations for ourselves and the school that we all love.

T he Parent Involvement Form (PIF) is a tool which YOU can use to keep track of the topics
being discussed in your children’s classes. It con-tains a list of topics per term which you could refer to in order to help your children study and prepare for class. This is the perfect opportunity for you to be more involved in their learning journey! That being said, please make sure that you have received one PIF per subject.
The school values feedback, so please don’t forget to return the reply slip to your child’s Homeroom Ad-viser, indicating that you have re-ceived a complete copy of the PIFs.
Heads up, caregivers and drivers of students: there will be an orientation/seminar on policies on fetching the stu-
dents on August 8, 2019 at the SSIS Main Hall. This session will aim to heighten awareness and strengthen collaboration among us so be sure to be there!

Standardized and Diagnostic Tests
T he opening of the new school year is but high time to test students’ enduring understanding of the lessons taught in the previous years. Moreo-
ver, this new beginning is another opportunity for the school to better prepare for the students’ upcoming learning experiences.
Standardized tests provide an objective and relevant feedback to the school in terms of its quality and effectiveness of instruction against national norm and international standards.
SBA tests are administered to Grade School and High School students in subjects such as English, Math, and Science. SBA is based on an outcomes-based education philosophy. Far different from the tra-ditional teacher-made assessments, standardized tests evaluate the students’ performance, based on the re-quired standards per grade level, rather than comparing a student’s performance with other students.
SBA tests will be administered on August 9, except for Grades 4 and 8 Math and Grades 7-10 Sci-ence which will be for a later date. The schedule of ex-ams are seen on the right side of this article.
Diagnostic tests will also be facilitated in order to better catalogue the students’ abilities and learning
styles. Tests on Multiple Intelligences and Learning Styles will be taken by 3rd to 12th grade students on August 6-7 because the institution believes that the traditional understanding of intelligence does not suffice in explaining the wide variety of abilities that the students possess,
All the results of these tests will be used by the teachers and the school for the improvement of the institution’s curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

VALUE OF THE WEEK
Corner Parenting
: Setting Goals with Your Child “People with goals succeed because they know where they’re
going.” - Earl Nightingale
S cience says 92 percent of people don't achieve their goals. Perhaps, most of them have never learned how to effectively set their goals. You can help your child learn the skill of goal-setting, which is critical for developing grit and just
simply getting what you want out of life.
1. LET THEM CHOOSE THEIR BIG GOAL Ask questions like, “What’s something you wish you could achieve?” or “What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?” 2. DISCUSS THE PURPOSE OF THEIR GOAL Show interest and ask your child why they want what they want. Discussing this would not only enlighten you but may actually enlighten your child just by think-ing of the answer. 3. BREAK THE BIG GOAL INTO SMALLER STEPS Use the “goal ladder” to break down their big goal into simpler, more easily-attainable steps or objectives. 4. BRAINSTORM POTENTIAL OBSTACLES Encourage them to plan for potential obstacles. Talk about bad habits or neg-ative thoughts. Ask them, “if you feel like giving up, what would you want to do in-stead?
