Stop Starvation in Rome
By: Laura Bundus
Hunger
• Starvation has always been a problem around the world• Roman starvation However started during thedownfall of the empire. • Because people could no longer afford to pay taxes the government couldn’t provide much either
Rome tried to provide
• The roman government did have welfare but too many people wereon it and the government couldn’tsupport them• The welfare program was called the annona, people were issued tokens called tali or tesserae • government baked bread was given out
What didn’t work
• The Roman Empire was so big it was hard to transport the food and good to certain places, which is why the people did not
get enough food. • There were no available jobs or Medicare available at the time• Slave labor was cheap so that lead to unemployment
Solutions they tried• Candles and sticks of animal fat were eaten in times of
starvation • People who grew their own food were in a little better shape all though most of the food was taken by tax collectors• Julius Caesar cut welfare down during his rule, during
that time Rome thrived. After his rule however it went back up and slowly the fall of the empire started
What my solution is
• My idea is to provide more government paid jobs. This will help the people so they have more money and the self runed businesses wont be paying out of there salary to pay their workers which means more money for taxes too.
• With more jobs provided you get more money, and more employers
welfare
• I still think there should be a welfare system the people still in need don’t need to be neglected
• But I think the food stamps should have to be worked for, like to get your monthly food stamps you have to do community service• This saves the government money instead of
paying people to do small jobs
