CATHOLICSOFPLEASANTON.ORG Stories of Hope ... We may have or know someone who has experienced what we call, “Stories of Hope”. We hear a lot of them during the season of Lent, but we can just as easily call them Easter stories. Whether it’s a community of women in Mexico, a family in India, or a young man in El Salvador, each is faced with a challenge - a crisis of faith. Instead of throwing up their hands, they commit to act. For me, these stories aren’t so different from the Emmaus story. When the risen Jesus encounters his disciples on the road to Emmaus, it’s quite clear that their journey away from Jerusalem is, in fact, a journey away from hope. They’ve witnessed their friend, their hoped-for savior die. They’ve seen their community scattered. They think their trust in God was misplaced. What is left for them now? Jesus, of course, turns them around - quite literally. Their encounter with the risen Christ means a renewed encounter with hope. God is not done yet, and darkness and suffering do not have the final word. The disciples reverse direction, heading back to Jerusalem to proclaim the good news of the risen Christ. Our modern day “Stories of Hope” remind us that this Emmaus story continues to unfold in our own time. adequate or safe water to drink. We need only turn on the nightly news to know that war and violence plague our communities - both at home and abroad. Where should we place our hope when the challenges seem insurmountable? It’s tempting to throw up our hands in despair. Yet, this is the story of Resurrection. We meet Christ daily in the faces of our neighbors, those we meet in our work, our school, our home, on our streets. These encounters need not be enormous acts of philanthropy or world-saving initiatives; sometimes all it takes is a little snack, a small gesture to affirm our common humanity. We encounter Christ, too, within ourselves. By probing the depths of our own inner life, we come in contact with the God who desires that we live in community - that we look out for one another. And in these encounters, we have reason to hope. Because God is not done yet - and so long as we have strength to continue the work of building a culture of encounter, of responding to our Gospel call, neither are we. As we begin this Easter season, let us commit ourselves to sharing Easter hope and joy with all those we encounter. Deacon Gary Wortham Director of Worship

Invite 2.0 St. Elizabeth Seton Chapel Wednesdays, May 3 thru 5/24, 7:30 PM - 9 PM

Invite 2.0 is to help explore the big questions – to find a deeper sense of your spiritual side. Is there something bigger out there? It is a place for you to slow down, listen to some soft music, watch a short thought-provoking video, and explore your thoughts and hearts in small group discussions with others. If you are interested in joining the Invite 2.0 team, contact Roxanne Rasmussen at [email protected].

Visit us at www.invite2.org and rsvp to [email protected].

Talk on Conscience St. Elizabeth Seton Chapel Friday, May 12 at 7:00 PM

Gus Nystrom uses two books/movies to highlight training and following conscience. "Les Miserables" provides two great examples from the time of the French Revolution. The book "In Solitary Witness" provides what may be the best known examples (from the lives of Franz Joseph Jagerstater and his wife Franziska during the start of WWII). The talk will mostly be serious, but the closing will be joyous. "Les Miserables" was written by Victor Hugo in 1862. "In Solitary Witness" was written by Gordon Zahn in 1986. The Jagerstater story will appear in movie form under the name "St. Radegund" (their small town in Austria), highlighting the Jagerstater's rock-solid love.

Any questions, contact Gus at (925) 551-8064.

1st Wednesdays at Main Street The Catholic Community of Pleasanton has a booth at downtown Pleasanton's First Wednesdays Summer Street Fairs. Please visit our booth between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM from May to August! The Teen Choir performs a few songs and our Confirmation Teens provide face painting for the kids. We talk to people about our Church and our faith. It's a non-threatening way to begin sharing our faith! Mark your calendars to visit the CCOP booth (near Dean's Cafe on Main Street).

RCIA: Come and See The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process that adults complete to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.

Spring Faith Formation Series The Search for Happiness

St. Elizabeth Seton Church - 7:00 PM May 2: Happiness through Jesus’s Teachings May 9: Happiness / The Church and the Meaning Of Our Lives

We were created for happiness. Every person yearns for happiness and the search captivates our being. We have an innate desire to be happy, and our actions are controlled by this desire. At times, we recognize and act upon that which brings us happiness. Other times the right path to happiness is in front of us but we don’t spot the signs. Join us as we discuss God’s desire and design for our happiness and the signs he places in our lives. Series Leaders: Rev. Kwame Assenyoh & Henry Correa
