Hard Engineering

Hard engineering is often used for defence against storms but it isn’t effective. It is often short-term and and tends to be very expensive. They also may have a high impact on the landscape or environment and is unsustainable. Types of hard engineering methods include: building a sea wall, building groynes and rock armour or boulder barriers.

Hurricane: Katrina

Hurricane Katrina was one of the deadliest hurricanes ever to hit the US. On estimate around 1,833 people died in the hurricane and the flooding that followed in August 2005. Millions of other people were left homeless in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast. It cost the US $108 billion in damages according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The people of New Orleans made levees but they were destroyed in the storm surges. The hurricane surprised a lot of people in Florida because Katrina went from tropical storm to hurricane in less than a day. On the Gulf Coast people were evacuated as it was declared a state of emergency.
