Storms and Weather  Lecture 1What's the difference between weather and climate?

Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a particular time and place.

Four Elements of Weather:Moisture    Temperature    Wind Speed    Atmospheric Pressure

Climate refers to weather patterns that are characteristic of a region or place for many years.

The Source of Earth's Heat

The Sun = Solar Energy transferred to earth to heat the land, oceans, and atmosphere.

Different surfaces absorb heat energy at different rates.

Different surfaces give off heat energy at different rates.

This difference is what causes wind and weather patterns to change.

2

What does unequal heating of the planet do?

Causes wind, weather patterns to chance and massive storms.

HurricanesA massive rotating storm that forms north of the equator in the Atlantic Ocean, eastern Pacific Ocean, or Caribbean Sea when warm air rises over tropical waters.  Wind speeds of 119 km per hour or more.

3

TornadoA violent windstorm that spirals around a rotating column of air (the vortex) and moves in a narrow path over land.

4

Tornado AlleyWhere cold dry air from Canada pours over the Rocky Mountains and collides with warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico.

5

ThunderstormA disturbance in the earth's atmosphere that involves lightning, thunder, and sometimes gusty surface winds with heavy rain and hail.

6

VortexThe movement of liquids or gases in a spiral around a central axis.  In a storm, it is the calm center area which clouds spiral.The fastest winds are in the wall of the vortex.

Highest Wind Speeds

7

How is Hail Formed?

8

Layers of the Atmosphere

What are the main gases that make up the atmosphere?

9

Greenhouse Effect

What are the Greenhouse Gases?

10

How the Greenhouse Effect Works

11

The Water Cycle

Key Vocabulary for the Water Cycle• Evaporation & Transpiration• Condensation• Precipitation• Infiltration• Surface Runoff• Percolation

12

Weather FrontsWhere air of different masses collide.

13

Convection CurrentsWhen gas, liquids and semiliquids(asthenosphere) move in a circular pattern.
