Sofia Coppola Character Similar

(Internal?) Battles Christy Phillips

Page 2: Story board

The foggy atmosphere and pastel purple-blue hues of the scenery give the movies a hazy view of reality and set the stage for the characters struggles. Coppola is trying to depict the characters hazy view of reality (in The Bling Ring),or their life (in Marie Antoinette, and Lost in Translation) and what they are missing in life. Everything appears beautiful externally- however, things are not always what they appear to be…

All the shots sort of have this underlying brightness, some brighter than the others- but all have a source of natural lighting to them. Giving the viewer a clue of what is to come. Everything feels fresh and airy, but the almost unnatural hues appear pretty, but still seem off.

The onward Glance- If you ever watch a Coppola movie you will notice this to be possibly one concrete item you can expect. It gives the viewer a chance to try and get inside the character’s heads a bit. Sofia uses this depiction to show that her characters have a deep yearning for something more in life…

The characters are all looking something. The “onward gaze” signifies and tells us that the characters are looking for more from life… new friends… a fresh start… and a new life. What that will entail and how they will get there may take them down a path they never imagined taking, (for example the Bling Ring and the robberies Marc commits to get in good with and impress Rebecca)

Loneliness is most definitely a clear point in the characters’ underlying issues. I might even argue that it is each one of their biggest issues throughout each movie.

It is hard to see, directly in The Bling Ring each characters loneliness in one simple picture. I used this photo as a placeholder. There is a lot to be discussed about the underlying loneliness in The Bling Ring.

What can not be said… the word’s that the characters can not say are their driving forces. They each love someone or something which justifies their actions.

CREATIVE PIECE• Dear Rebecca…• Dear Charlotte…• Dear France… (Apologizing for the lifestyle)…

• I shall tie it together to the video, by reading it in the video? Or place it after the video in a blog post? Not quite sure about this part yet… but it is meant to describe what we see as a viewer as the characters’ internal struggle, and them admitting to said struggle.
