For eight seasons, HBO ruled the air-waves with fire-breathing dragons, wicked royals and rebellious wild-
lings in “Game of Thrones,” and now the cable giant is bringing viewers an-other epic tale inspired by a series of fantasy novels.
Dafne Keen (“Logan,” 2017) stars as Lyra Belacqua, an orphan from an alter-nate parallel universe who sets out to find her kidnapped friend in “His Dark Materials,” premiering Monday, Nov. 4, on HBO. Her adventure leads her to un-cover a nefarious plot involving stolen
children and a mysterious substance known as Dust.
Based on the book series of the same name by Philip Pullman, the HBO-BBC co-production was a long time in the making. The success of the first book in the series spawned the 2007 feature film “The Golden Compass,” but plans for big-screen sequels were scrapped due to the film’s negative reception. Re-ligious groups were critical of the source material’s anti-religion themes, while fans of the books claimed the film actu-ally omitted integral parts of the story that were critical of religion. In 2015, BBC One announced a television adap-tation of the series, but it wasn’t until
2018 that HBO signed on as co-produc-er and international distributor.
The first season hasn’t even pre-miered yet, but the cast and crew have already started filming Season 2, a nec-essary move considering the age of the show’s young star. Season 1 of “His Dark Materials” chronicles the events of the first book in the series “The Golden Compass” (known as “Northern Lights” in the U.K.), while Season 2 picks up with the events of the second book “The Subtle Knife,” which continues just hours after the final chapter of Book 1. In a September interview with EW.com, executive producer Jane Tranter (“Suc-cession”) explained why working with young actors meant they couldn’t stop filming for long.
“Suddenly they’re six inches taller, and they’re a different shape and their voices are different,” Tranter said. “Our feeling was we really couldn’t leave more than a very small gap between the end of when Dafne Keen finished film-ing, which was December 2018, and when she started again, July 2019. That was basically the biggest gap that we could possibly do and still have her come back and convincingly look like it was moments, hours later.”
Given the challenge of keeping the series convincing, Tranter explained: “The BBC and HBO very kindly said, ‘Let’s make 16 episodes across the two books and go for it.’”
As the series opens, Lyra is living at Oxford’s Jordan College under the tute-
lage of her uncle, explorer Lord Asriel (James McAvoy, “Split,” 2016). When her friend Roger (Lewin Lloyd, “Judy,” 2019) goes missing, Lyra stumbles upon a kidnapping plot involving other miss-ing children. The unruly young girl also encounters a mysterious woman named Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson, “The Affair”), who, according to Wilson in an inter-view with the Times, was described as “the mother of all evil and the cesspit of moral filth.”
While there are a few heinous villains in “His Dark Materials,” there are plenty of heroes as well. Lin-Manuel Miranda, best known for creating and starring in the Broadway smash hit “Hamilton,” portrays balloon pilot and adventurer Lee Scoresby, who befriends Lyra on her mission to save kidnapped children and uncover the truth about the substance known as Dust, the subject of her Uncle Asriel’s research. They’re aided by pow-erful witch queen Serafina Pekkala (Ruta Gedmintas, “The Strain”). As she journeys through alternate worlds, Lyra also befriends a courageous boy named Will (Amir Wilson, “The Kid Who Would Be King,” 2019).
Other notable castings include James Cosmo (“Braveheart,” 1995) as gyptian Farder Coram, and Anne-Marie Duff (“From Darkness”) as Ma Costa, the gyptian mother of a boy who was kid-napped by the dreaded “Gobblers.” Theater actor Will Keen portrays Father McPhail, a high-ranking Church official. Ariyon Bakare (“Good Omens”) ap-
pears as Lord Boreal, an acquaintance of Coulter’s. Clarke Peters (“The Wire”) stars as the Master of Jordan College, Dr. Carne.
As in Pullman’s novels, the show is set in an alternate universe where peo-ple’s souls live outside their bodies as talking animal companions known as daemons. Lyra’s daemon is a shape-shifting companion known as Pantalai-mon (Pan) in the novels, voiced by Kit Connor (“Get Santa,” 2014) in the HBO/BBC production. All children’s daemons have the ability to take the shape of dif-ferent animals, unlike those of adults. Asriel’s daemon is a snow leopard known as Stelmaria (Helen McCrory, “The Queen,” 2006), while Scoresby’s daemon is an Arctic hare named Hester (Cristela Alonzo, “Cristela”). Famed Brit-ish actor David Suchet (“Agatha Chris-tie’s Poirot”) lends his voice to Kaisa, the gyrfalcon daemon linked to the witch Pekkala. Coulter’s Golden Monkey dae-mon doesn’t speak, but lead puppeteer and CFX coordinators Brian Fisher (“Florence Foster Jenkins,” 2016) pro-vides animal noises for the character.
Joe Tandberg (“The Innocents”) voic-es the buzzed-about armored polar bear featured in the show’s official trailer, aka Iorek Byrnison. The creature hails from a race of bear-like creatures with human-level intelligence and opposable thumbs. Unlike humans, they have no daemons. He, too, becomes a compan-ion of Lyra’s as she journeys through worlds.

Halloween is in the rear view mir-ror, and that means we can focus on what is, for many families, the
biggest feast of the year: Thanksgiving.We’re four weeks away from the big
day (and, for once, I’m not talking about Black Friday). That gives Food Network just enough time to air the full slate of a seasonal competition se-ries that seems poised to become an annual tradition on the cable network.
A second “Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge” gets underway on Sunday, Nov. 3, with all-new competitors and challenges. Giada de Laurentiis returns
as the celebrity chef host, and she will put these Turkey Day pros to the test. Judges Alex Guarnaschelli, Carla Hall and Christian Petroni will decide who stays and who is out of the competi-tion.
There are four episodes in all, and the action ramps up when the chefs are tasked with transforming an inex-pensive grocery item into a top-notch appetizer. The winner will have an ad-vantage for the next round, wherein the competitors must incorporate an inexpensive turkey item into their tur-key dinner. And that’s when the judges will eliminate one of the competitors — the rest will continue on and hope-fully make it to the Nov. 24 episode,
when the ultimate winner will be awarded the $25,000 grand prize.
I know what you’re thinking. Six competitors, two challenges and one elimination per episode, four episodes in all — that’s the Food Network for-mula for seasonal TV success.
There’s definitely a tried-and-true approach at play here. But it works: when it premiered last year, the ratings for the first episode propelled it into the top 10 for Sunday cable ratings.
When you have a winning format, the focus shifts to keeping it fresh with creative themes and challenges, like in-ternational flavors in the Nov. 10 epi-sode. Part of the credit also goes to the host, who knows how to keeps things upbeat and moving along, while the contestants’ backstories, flavor prefer-ences and antics give us reason to root for them all the way to the end.
And then there are the judges. Guar-naschelli and Hall are two veterans of high-stakes competition series — the former is an Iron Chef, while the latter got her big break on “Top Chef” — and both have plenty of TV credits be-tween them. Their dynamic, along with “Food Network Star” winner Petroni, made the show immensely watchable last year. And the good news is that all of those elements are in place for the second edition of “Ultimate Thanksgiv-ing Challenge,” which starts this Sun-day.

Q: Is it true that Ernest Borg-nine was almost in “The Godfa-ther”?
A: “The Godfather” almost looked very different than it did when it took the cinematic world by storm 1972. But the biggest change that nearly happened was casting sitcom star Ernest Borgnine as Don Vito Corle-one, the titular mafia kingpin, in-stead of Marlon Brando.
Well, that’s not exactly true. Borg-nine was no nearer to being cast than Anthony Quinn, Richard Conte or Danny Thomas — reportedly, the studio’s preference in the early stag-es of the film’s development was for anybody but Brando.
He was a famously difficult actor to work with, which was the source of the studio’s reluctance, but that wasn’t the only place where Para-mount’s vision differed from that of director Francis Ford Coppola.
They had other acting preferences as well (they also weren’t keen on Al Pacino as Vito’s son Michael, prefer-ring more heartthrobby types like Martin Sheen, Robert Redford or even soap star Ryan O’Neal), and they wanted it to be a contemporary film with hippies and televisions in the background, rather than a period piece.
“If I hadn’t’ve fought, I would have made a movie with Ernest Bor-gnine and Ryan O’Neal set in the ‘70s,” said Coppola, in the essential film-history book “Easy Riders, Rag-ing Bulls.”
Paramount would eventually be rewarded for letting Coppola have his way. “The Godfather” is now a cinematic classic that has, to date,
earned $246 million from its $6 mil-lion budget.
Q: When are we going to get
new episodes of the show about astronaut Cooper photographing the Earth from space to find trea-sure?
A: It’s possible that “Cooper’s Trea-sure” will stay buried forever.
There’s been no formal announce-ment of cancellation, but like good treasure hunters, we can follow the clues that are available to get to the truth.
To start with, Discovery hasn’t aired a new episode of the series since Aug. 17, 2018 — that was the end of the second season.
Three days after that final episode aired, the show’s official Facebook page said, “Cooper’s Treasure” was “paused for now” (and then suggest-ed that viewers watch a different Dis-covery treasure-hunting show in-stead).
Skip ahead nearly a full year, to Aug. 14, 2019, and Darrell Miklos, star of “Cooper’s Treasure,” wrote on Twit-ter that he was moving on. “I’m about to embark on a treasure hunt over-seas of a different kind so unlike any other I’ve been involved [in] yet … I can’t wait to tell you all about it!!”
It turns out he was, in fact, able to wait, as he hasn’t told us anything about it yet.
“Cooper’s Treasure” was a rather innovative entry to the treasure show genre, in that the circumstances be-hind the hunt were part of the amaz-ing story.
