BaYonne PoeTrYAs the City of Bayonne celebrates its 150th anniversary this year,
it is a great opportunity to recall the late Herschel Silverman. Her-sch was known nationally and internationally as a Beat poet. Beatpoems do not rhyme. They follow the rhythms of speech. Beatpoetry was influenced by jazz, and Hersh often recited his poetry,accompanied by the playing saxophones and drums. He publishednumerous poems, and participated regularly in poetry readings inNew York City. The New Jersey State Council on the Artsawarded him its Fellowship in Poetry.For many years, he operated Hersch’s Beehive, a candy store at
West 29th Street, across Avenue A from Bayonne High School.Hersch kept a watchful eye on Bayonne High School students, andhe took good care of us. This is one of the great things about Bay-onne.Hersch showed us the best about Bayonne. He lived here, ran a
beloved, local store, and also took part in the arts and literary scenein New York. Our community inspired some of his poetry. At theinauguration of Bayonne Mayor Joe Doria in 1998, Hersch reciteda special poem for the occasion, “O Bayonne on Approaching theMillennium.” To give you a sample of Hersch’s work, here is thetext of “O Bayonne”:
